Présentation de l'éditeur

Thick thatched roofs and rough mud plaster walls of farmers houses, intricate carved wood transoms and precisely woven tatami mats of aristocratic compounds each element of traditional Japanese architecture tells a story. These stories encompass the particular historic development, construction, function, and symbolism inherent in each architectural element, large and small. From roofs, walls, and floors to door pulls and kettle hangers, this book situates the stories firmly within the natural environment and the traditional culture of Japan. Japanese architecture developed with influences from abroad and particular socio-political situations at home. The resulting forms and construction materials soaring roofs with long eaves, heavy timber structures of stout columns supporting thick beams, mud plaster walls flecked with straw and sand, and refined paper-covered lattice sh¯oji screens are recognisable as distinctly Japanese. Designed with strong connections to the surrounding environment, these built forms utilize natural construction materials in ways that are both practical and inventive. This book provides a comprehensive perspective of traditional Japanese architecture, relating the historical development and context of the buildings and gardens of Japan while examining the stories of the individual architectural elements.

This is the book for you. There is also another one, "Building the Japanese House Today" by Len Brackett And Peggy Landers Rao which is an excellent companion book. These books delve into the actual building of a home the "Japanese" way, from choosing woods to joints, to mats to tea rooms to sample floor plans to.... infinity and beyond! Everything you need to know about Japanese home architecture is covered or so it seems... (I say that because I'm not finished with either but am using them side by side). Excellent material. What else can I say.

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the beauty of Japanese design. The author is very careful in conveying her abundant knowledge about Japanese architecture so that lay people like me can understand and appreciate the thought that goes into the design. The photography and book design help make this a book I eagerly give as a special gift to my Japanese friends as well as to some American friends.

This book would make a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Japan, architecture, or craftsmanship in general. You can dip into the book to enjoy chapters on the materials, tools, history, principles, and traditions of Japanese architecture, all illustrated with beautiful photographs by Ben Simmons. At other times, you may wish to focus on chapters on specific ornamental elements, such as rocks, water, bridges, walls, and gardens, again beautifully captured in photos by Simmons. Mira Locher's depth of knowledge of Japanese architecture is conveyed in a very accessible style for those of us who are laymen. This book is comprehensive, intelligent, and gorgeous!

I had checked this book out at my public library and kept it too long and lost it....
in other words, I loved this book I took it everywhere!
I gave a 5 star based on so much history, graphics and details on each type of house that are across the Japanese Nation and I would keep on reading it, so I'll check out the book again from the library !!
