Présentation de l'éditeur

The story of how Palestine became Israel

‘Rishou Hass'an had decided it was impossible to pick apples all day with a permanent erection …’

Palestine, 1933. The centuries old rhythms of sleepy Rab’allah have been disturbed by the building of a Jewish kibbutz on the swamp in the valley below the village. The Jews are the future, the twentieth century. The Jews are the enemy. The Jews are their new neighbors.

The Jews, in the shape of Sarah Landauer are also beautiful, tempting - and a direct challenge to the way the men of Rab’allah have always lived.

Zayyad Hass’an, Rishou’s father and muktar of the village, can see the future and it fills him with dread. On one side the Jews; on the other, the Britishers and the Arab muftis in Jerusalem, who don’t give a damn about them either. His son, Wagil wants to rise up and fight for Islam. But what is Islam? What is Palestine? And where will the fighting lead them?

Far away in Europe, another father faces the same impossible dilemmas as Zayyad. Josef Rosenberg has been a respected, even beloved, man in Ravenswald. But he is also Jewish.

As the Nazis take a hold in his homeland, he watches with despair as his only son falls in love with a German girl. Once he would have objected that his son was finding a match beneath him; now it is his son who battles prejudice of quite another kind.

Two fathers; two sons; two very different women. A world about to convulse into war. How can they protect all they know and love from the cataclysm to come?

From the snow-hushed winter streets of Nazi Bavaria, to the burned hills of Palestine, from the Alte Post to the Al-Aqsa, the Dome of the Rock, romance and terror collide in a novel of forbidden loves and ancient hatreds.

This is the first book in the Jerusalem series, tracing the roots of the Jewish-Arab conflict in the Middle East, from the exodus from Nazi Germany to the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. It is the story behind the scenes that you see every night on the evening news.

Colin Falconer is the best selling author of ANASTASIA and the OPIUM series and fifteen other best selling novels. His books have been translated into eighteen languages.

...a good read, a good story. No "happy" endings but regretful ones.
The struggle the Jews had to endure under Hitler whereas some were able to flee the country & settle elsewhere but most were not able to leave. It was a horrific time for them, to say the least. Some wanted to go to the Holy Land God promised Moses and the Israelites was theirs.
Thus Israel begun building a nation again. However, life was hard for them there, too. They purchased Muslim land that was very poor in yielding produce but they worked hard, smart, & began to turn the useless ground into a prosperous land, little by little.
There was division of racism between the Jews and Muslim tribes in trying to keep their youth from marrying outside their people. The leaders of the kibbutzes and Muslims in the smaller villages where they lived side-by-side had a type of professional friendship in trying to work together for peaceful co-existence among themselves.

There was the British occupation with the higher leaders (ignorant of Muslim tribal ways) in London commanding rules and regulations that went against centuries of the way Muslim tribes lived and ruled their own people. And, of course, there are a few "hot-heads" wanting to fight & spill blood with a leading "trouble-maker" stirring them up in the background. Thus anger was stirred up and the fighting begins.

This story leaves one with a lot of deep thoughts.

What was that about? The ending just sort of dribbled out and the reader was left with a feeling of a hurriedly completed book. Maybe he had a lunch appointment or something but just as I was getting into it, it just fizzled out.

I thought this was a new book by a loved author. It isn't. This is the first chapters of the book Fury. I love the book and would like to read it again on my Kindle however I won't be buying it in 4 sections and paying far more for it than for the paper version.

Boy, Does Colin Falconer know how to write a book that you just can't put down. This is the first in a series of three and the characterisation is fantastic. It tells of jewish people in Nazi Germany prior to the start of the second world war and what they had to put up with. The naive thinking of some thinking things will get better to the fatalistic view that they won't. Only people who lived through these times would appreciate what Falconer has written. The love between a German girl and a Jew poses horrible options for each. If you want to read a book that will keep you enthralled then read this. I am halfway through the second of the trio and am just as interested as the first. It also covers a love story of an Arab man and a jewish girl. Talk about complications.

I read this book expecting a story about the origins of modern Jerusalem. What I got was a poorly organized group of half told stories that never came together. Characters appeared and disappeared with no rhyme or reason. Maybe they reappear later, but I will never know.
