5.0 étoiles sur 5 What a fantastic book! 22 avril 2008
Par MLao - Publié sur
I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years now and jazz has always been a mystery to me. I always wanted to play jazz standards but never had the patience to learn them. After trying many boring and unnecessarily difficult books, I bought Dan Towey's Chord Melodies on Hal Leonard and that got me started. I was hooked. I was then looking for a more challening book, one that I could impress my audience with. When I found these note-for-note transcriptions of Joe Pass' Virtuoso recordings, I thought I'd give it a try but wasn't too serious about it. I figured this would be way out of my league.

Well, I've had this book for a week now and can't let my guitar down. I have learned the beautiful "Have You Met Miss Jones" standard by practicing over four hours a day. Unlike some books on chord melodies, Joe Pass does not use super complicated chords but rather a beautiful melody line along with swinging rhythms. For a non-jazz guitarist like me, it turned out to be a really good fit. This book is definitely for advanced guitarists but it certainly isn't out of reach for those of us who are prepared to practice hard.

The transcriptions are very accurate and the fingerings are top notch. Roland Leone did a fantastic job both in terms of accuracy and practicality. Highly recommended.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Super hard! 31 août 2008

The only thing about this book I would have liked to see were lists of the recordings these transcriptions came from. My guess is that the average jazz student(especially guitar players!) can't sight-read many of the polyrythmic figures. Plus, things like nuance and dynamic tend to get lost in transcriptions.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best Joe Pass Book!! 24 janvier 2014
Par Richard Greig - Publié sur
Although I titled this the "Best Joe Pass Book" I actually think it's one of two of the best Joe Pass book's I've ever come across. The other is the Joe Pass Collection book.

The transcriptions in here are very accurate and you can't get better than this for a solo jazz guitar arrangement. They are very challenging pieces to play and are really rewarding and beneficial to those who take the time to get them down. You can be an advanced jazz guitarist and these transcriptions will still take some time.

All the tunes in this book are based on the four Virtuoso albums Joe made: Virtuoso, Virtuoso #2 and Virtuoso No. 4. No transcriptions are present from Virtuoso #3, although Roland Leone has published a book that has all the transcriptions to Virtuoso #3. The one exception is "In Your Own Sweet Way" which comes from the album "Chops".

If you want to get really picky you can find some errors in the transcriptions: some chords that are supposed to be strummed or arpeggiated aren't notated at times and sometimes a note is added that Joe didn't play but nonetheless fit the chord (for instance, Roland includes the 3rd of a C9 chord when Joe just played the root, b7 and 9th). I tested these transcriptions by listening to the recordings with the Amazing Slow Downer to get each note correct and those are the few minor mistakes I've come across. Note that these mistakes are very minor and I still say the transcriptions are extremely accurate.

Joe Pass is my biggest musical influence and I've taken the time to learn several transcriptions from him from the two books I mentioned earlier as well as even transcribe a lot of his stuff myself. That being said, learning transcriptions from this book is very rewarding and well worth the effort.

I'm very grateful to Roland Leone for taking the immense task of transcribing these performances of Joe.

Best wishes on your jazz guitar journey.

Here's the tune list with the corresponding album the transcription comes from:

1. Have You Met Miss Jones - Virtuoso
2. Can't Get Started - Virtuoso No. 4
3. In Your Own Sweet Way - Chops (the one transcription that's not a solo guitar transcription but a guitar/bass duo between Joe
Pass and Niels Henning Orsted Pederson).
4. The Man I Love - Virtuoso No. 4
5. On Green Dolphin Street - Virtuoso #2
6. 'Round Midnight - Virtuoso
7. Sweet Lorraine - Virtuoso

This book is awesome! Just one thing though.. its pretty tough. Intermediate players beware this book will require patiences! Having the CD or listening to it on YouTube is a must to understand some of the feel of the songs.
