Tessa Blakeley Silver's background is in print design and traditional illustration. She evolved over the years into web and multi-media development, where she focuses on usability and interface design. Prior to starting her consulting and development company hyper3media (pronounced hyper-cube media) http://hyper3media.com, Tessa was the VP of Interactive Technologies at eHigherEducation, an online learning and technology company developing compelling multimedia simulations, interactions, and games that met online educational requirements like 508, AICC, and SCORM. She has also worked as a consultant and freelancer for J. Walter Thompson and The Diamond Trading Company (formerly known as DeBeers) and was a Design Specialist and Senior Associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers' East Region Marketing department. Tessa authors several design and web technology blogs. Joomla! Template Design is her first book.

Ce livre est anglais est très accessible même en ne maitrisant que très peu l'anglais. La lecture se fait très compréhensible et tous les sujets sont très bien traités.

Code and style sheets don't jive with book content

I, too, can only give this book two stars, which is unfortunate, because had a little bit more care been taken this could have easily been a five-star book.
The main reason I can only give the book two stars is due to the same concerns that have been previously expressed...the code and style sheets are not in sync with the text of the book (and I'm only in Chapter 2). I've had to constantly replace the code and style sheets I've typed in from the book with the code and style sheets downloaded from the site. More often than not, changes have been made to the code or style sheets as the book progresses without the author even indicating that such changes have been made. This is not something that someone who has purchased this book should have to contend with.

good book but bad sample

The book is good but I put 2 stars because the sample are incomplete and not syncronized with the text.
The author doesn't provide the sample joomla database, there are missing files from chapter 03.
Then it's not possible to exactly follow the book step by step.
Otherwise it's a good book

As a seasoned developer of sites built on Wordpress, Drupal, etc, I was looking for a book to give me a quick introduction to Joomla templates. I didn't want a chapter on templates in a book focused on the more obvious details of using a CMS. I needed something from a designer's perspective.
This book was great.
It's a quick, painless introduction to building Joomla templates from scratch. As someone who knew nothing about Joomla, I was amazed at how quickly I built a custom site without a single hiccup. The book guides you through design considerations unique to Joomla, through basic template structure and development, finally finishing with an intro to including more complex features and Joomla customization.
The book does not try to replicate the reference material better maintained in an online wiki. Instead, it provides an easy to follow narrative for experienced designers.
For those of you with less positive reviews -- did you try emailing Tessa via her website with your questions or concerns? It would have been a better use of your time and her skills. I wrote her and had a reply within hours.
