4.0 étoiles sur 5A good biography22 novembre 2008

Great biography of Jose and his time as a manager in Portugal. The discussion of tactics and footballing philosophy was very interesting and well presented. It gave great insight into what it takes to be a manager involved in multiple championships (league, league cup, european cup) and how to get the best out of your players and staff. Of particular interest was how the club as a business was portrayed. The discussion of the front office, trainers, assistants, players, stadium grounds crew, and everyone else that contributes to the final product that is a football match was very interesting.

If you are reading this book you probably already know how his run in Portugal went. Much of this book read like an outdated newspaper as it was simply reporting scores. I would have liked to see a lot more insight into Mourinho's philosophies and less box scores. I would have also liked to read a lot more about his formative years as a coach. This books starts with his first head coaching position.

2.0 étoiles sur 5Awkward, incomplete biography8 juin 2013

I don't know if this was written in Portuguese and translated to English, but the writing is very awkward and strange. So is the structure, as it tediously follows every little detail of the matches but in the big picture gives away the outcome of important events too early, so there is no suspense. It's like "even though they lost the match, here's four pages about what happened at the match." Very strange book. Also was written before Mourinho's stints at some of Europe's top clubs. Provides a little insight into training and technique, which I found interesting, but needed much more of this and much less about who stayed in what hotel room for an away game.
This book helped me fall asleep while lying in bed at night. The only reason I gave it two stars is that I actually finished the thing.

Great book, well written addition to any coaches library. I adapt a lot of my coaching style from Mourinho as he is a special one to emulate.
