If you have not heard Dave Frank play piano you have been missing out on the very heartbeat of jazz on 52nd Street. In concert, Dave bops as if the fate of humanity depended upon his musical passion.

His "Joy Of Improv" series gives deep insight into the mind of a genius linked spiritually, even telepathically, to the past masters of the art.

The tunes elaborated on are contrefacts of familiar RB jazz numbers (All of Me/Less of Me, Just Friends/Buck Trends, Ornithology/Bird's Bounce, etc) usually in the common keys, backed in the LH mostly by standard rootless system stabs.

Will these books transmogrify you into a match for Frank's right hand prowess? Well, it's definitely a step in the right direction, I'll tell you that.

The point is not to imitate him, though, but rather to internalize the principles, vocabulary, and grammar in order to play like you - grokking your options as channeled through this guru of New York City jazz.

The CD is a beautiful thing. He plays his melodies with such perfect dynamics, all these cool little twists and turns like the ways he phrases his triplets. If there were no CD, you'd never get all those essential nuances from just the sheet music - no way. The high quality audio recording is an indispensable part of the package!

Take my advice: Buy the books, put in the time and when it all sinks in, you'll be so glad you did.

Jazz Pianist Dave Frank has a large number of master classes available on youtube (gratis!) as well as astonishing live concert material that you should also check out.

One of the many ways to get the knowledge 19 mars 2014

I was ready for this material. I am very weak musically. Now that I am retired I have the opportunity to pursue the piano as a hobby. This course gave me easy directions and exercises to obtain fundamental knowledge and ability about jazz and the piano. I saw Dave Frank on youtube and liked his approach and access to the material. I am working through the book which will take about six months then I will go to the second volume. There is no 'magic' in Dave's books but there is a clear and easily followed path to enjoying this delightful hobby of music via improv. I never get tired of practicing, am continually making progress and really enjoy developing jazz chords and sounds. Happy I got the course. After only five lessons completed I am already experimenting with my own stuff and understanding much more about the complicated jazz harmonies and progressions. If you are willing to work, this course opens the door to some Joy of Improv.

Great learn Jazz book. 20 mai 2014

Dave has his own solo improvise style of sorts which comes through I feel in this learning book. Covers many keys with great lesson tunes. Mostly 2-5-1 4 2-5-1 progressions. The included CD has all the lessons recorded on it so you can hear how they should sound. At first I didn't think I would learn much. Then I found after a little practice I can improvise with the notes provided but not use the same order or rhythm. Thus I conclude you can really use the lesson tunes to learn how to improvise those left hand solo riffs over Jazz chords.

As a beginner/intermediate student of jazz, I've found this course to be excellent. If you want to learn how to improvise, this is a great start. If you're already at an advanced level, it can further improve your skills.
