Présentation de l'éditeur

In Joyride Flatout, Dan Quarnstrom revisits the territory that originally inspired him, taught him to draw for the sheer fun of it and to recognize the opportunities he was presented with. From hot rods, to dragsters and custom cars, this is a book about finding inspiration and holding on to it. --Ce texte fait référence à une édition épuisée ou non disponible de ce titre.

Dynamic imagery and crisp heartfelt text 21 juin 2015
Par Leo Pando - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
A thing of beauty with first rate printing. Designer Johnny Lee's elegant design compliments Dan Quarnstrom's dynamic imagery and his crisp heartfelt text. Quarnstrom's passion for the subject matter and thrill in the doing are apparent on every page. One can almost feel the ground shaking, the imagery overwhelms akin to an actual drag race. For the uninitiated and for the hot rod aficionado alike JOYRIDE/FLAT OUT is a history lesson; an ode to Kalifornia Kar Kulture (with a nod to Rock 'n Roll); and a testament to pencil milage and expert draughtsmanship. This book is a labor of love and a must have. Dan Quarnstrom knocked it out of the park in every way. Or, more to the point, if JOYRIDE/FLAT OUT had a set of wings man I know it could fly.

Dan Quanstrom is a rare talent. His understanding of the American Hot Rod culture and it's effect on the values and aesthetics of America is profound. He is one of the most talented designer/illustrators around. These drawings and final pieces are inked by hand. . . no computer work at all on the original drawings or inkings. His sense of humor, car dynamics, animation are all a part of the mix of this incredible book. It begins with his first drawings as a child and ends with the mind blowing original designs that are beyond cool.
It a great read and fun as hell to look at. Great for that guy who loves cars and tech. Great Christmas pres.
Hot designs from Dan Quarnstrom 4 juillet 2015
Par Parka - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
Dan Quarnstrom has a passion for drawing and designing cars that developed from his first visit to a hot rod show in 1963. This book is a culmination of more than 50 years of passion. Other than cars, Dan Quarnstrom has created editorial illustrations for Rolling Stone before moving on to advertising illustration and visual development for films and video games.

The book's 144-page hardcover with a nice maroon red cover. It's almost A4 size.

This book features the customised car designs and sketches. Most look to me like traditionally drawn with pencil and ink, and the colours from coloured pencils probably and some with digital flat colours.

The cars in this book looks like automobiles from the 60s except they are caricatured and further customised. There are cars with menacing huge engines that stick out from the front, boxy yet classy bodies, small front with huge back, big wheels, fire coming out of exhaust and many other interesting stuff. I like the one that jumps up like a horse standing on two legs. I can only imagine stepping on the accelerators of one of these cars. Nice.

What you won't see are no sci-fi cars like those from Alien Race or The Timeless Racer or the more cartoony ones from Pixar's Cars. Quarnstrom has his own personal style when it comes to drawing cars.

In addition to the artworks there is also a selection of photos collected from visits to car shows that showcases customised cars. I thought such cars only exists on paper but apparently there are actually people out there who builds them, such as Ed "Big Daddy" Roth who's mentioned as inspiration, and Dean Jeffries. Other legends includes Von Dutch the originator of modern pinstriping.

Throughout the book, there's commentary on the hot rod culture as Dan Quarnstrom has experienced over the years, and probably still experiencing. Even from the writeup, you can feel the sense of enthusiasm. In the last few pages, Quarnstrom picked three designs and talked about his process to drawing them.

It's a wonderful book for those into automobile art.

Joy Flat Out!!! 8 août 2015

This book is a joy to look at. The cars are not just " hot ", they are characters from some animated toon with personalities that explode off the page with motion and personality. This is a guy who has fostered a love for hot rods that any guy who grew up in the 50's and 60's felt as we bought models of the latest Ed Roth creation to catch our own piece of this insane love and put it into this book. It is a must for any coffee table or bookshelf if you love this stuff or love a person who loves this stuff!
"Car-toons" redux - great! 14 septembre 2015

A great "car-toons"-style collection done by a true master of the genre. I'm trying to learn to draw, and copying these illustrations is a fast, enjoyable learning tool. But . . . simply thumbing through the book is great fun if you're a car-guy or a car-gal!
