This is the first book published about the very interesting films of Jules Dassin. The author collected all the informations required about each film that the famous blacklisted director made and has included some biograpichal notes about each actor of the cast, some information regarding the filmaking and pieces of the reviews of the films as written by major film critics of the period.
It's my personal opinion, that the unfair David Thomson's opinion about the collaboration of Mercouri and Dassin has harmed the outcome of their films and I do not understand why each author or reviewer of either Mercouri or Dassin has to include, explain or even comment about the above mentioned opinion of the Thomson. He not the God of Cinema Critics. He doesn't like 'He who must die'1957 and 'Phaedra'1962,but those films have recently enjoyed the love and respect of thousand of filmlovers(something that anyone can see in imdb).
Finally I have to inform the author that at the time of the publishing of the book a new mastered version 'The Law/La loi' was published by a minor dvd company, which provides a whole new perspective and understanding of the film. Also some months after the publication of the film 'Phaedra' made also it's debut in dvd.
On the whole, a very good first study of a very underrated film director
