Ageing rock 'n' rollers don't necessarily rock when they take a seat in front of the keyboards and relate the story of their lives. However, Sean Tyla, opposed to Keith Richards, does! The guy's obviously a natural and so he tells us what happened in, around, and after this great Pubrock band called immeculately DUCKS DELUXE. It's obvious, I used to be a fan. They were big in the Netherlands (if you can get big there), end even bigger in France. And while writing this I've put a tape of the Ducks live at Boddy's Music Inn on and it's rockin' and jiving! Great stuff! Now Sean has filled us in on the history of the Ducks and the Tyla Gang, who followed after the Ducks ground to a halt in 1975 and made it to fame in Germany. The writing is sharp, to the point, and the stories are garnished with anecdotes that will put a big grin on your face. Like Deke Leonard's "Rhinos, Winos & Lunatics" it grabs you from the word go until it suddenly ends, though the story is not complete by then. The end somehow takes you by surprise because you surely want the story to be told to the very end. Tyla doesn't! However Sean Tyla describes what it used be like in the 70s being a second division band without a spare pair of trousers and occasionally being forced to sell your guitars in order to keep your family in food. It's sad to read how devoted musicians became the balls in a pinball game played by the record company and management executives. They truly deserved better than that. And so at the end of their toiling there weren't any chauffeur-driven limousines nor mansions in the country, but only a load of bills to be paid.
Well-done, Sean, a great book. I thoroughly enjoyed it! And congrats to Soundcheck books on putting it out. I hope there are more to come.
