Présentation de l'éditeur

Former secret service agents turned private investigators, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, return in their most surprising, personal and dangerous case to date.

Michelle had chased many things in her life. As a track star and later Olympic rower, she had constantly pitted herself against others in races. As a cop in Tennessee she had run down her share of felons fleeing the scenes of their crimes. As a Secret Service Agent she had been fleet of foot next to limos carrying important leaders.

Tonight, though, she was competing against a long-legged teenager with the boundless energy and fresh knees of youth who had a substantial head start and was running like the devil was on his heels . . .

King and Maxwell encounter teenager Tyler Wingo when he has just received the tragic news that his soldier father has been killed in Afghanistan. But then Tyler receives an email from his father . . . after his supposed death.

Sean and Michelle are hired to solve the mystery, and their investigation leads to deeper, even more troubling questions. Could Tyler’s father really still be alive? Was his mission all that it seemed? Has Tyler’s life been a lie, and could he be the next target?

It’s clear that King and Maxwell have stumbled upon something even more sinister when those in power seem intent on removing them at any cost. Determined to help and protect Tyler, their search for the truth takes them on a perilous journey which not only puts their lives at risk but arrives at a frightening conclusion.

With the author’s previous five books starring King and Maxwell all #1s on the New York Times bestseller list Baldacci has every right to rest on his laurels - no way. He’s back again with the sixth thriller featuring the dynamite duo of Sean King and Michelle Maxwell and it’s better than ever. True to form he begins with a zinger and continues at high speed carrying readers along with an imaginative plot, can’t-resist characters, and imminent dangers.

Sam Wingo, an outstanding soldier who had been painstakingly vetted for an important mission was in the middle of nowhere, a country still mired in the ninth century, carrying a cargo weighing 4800 pounds. He wasn’t wearing his uniform but the clothes he’d been given, and had driven countless miles in a box truck. Nonetheless, he was close to his destination where everything should go according to plan. However, it didn’t, definitely did not.

First, he was almost out of gas, apparently someone had miscalculated. Secondly he was met by a gun put in his face by a man identifying himself as a CIA agent who said plans had been changed. Wingo knew that wouldn’t happen. Barely escaping with his life he reaches Kabul where he calls his commanding officer only to be told that the people he was supposed to meet were at the appointed place, where was he? Wingo is accused of being a traitor and keeping the cargo for himself. Further, he is told that his son, Tyler, has been told he was killed in Afghanistan.

Shift to King and Maxwell who are driving at night through driving rain. Michelle sees a boy running like the very devil is chasing him. She tells King to stop and takes off after the boy; he is perhaps fifteen and carrying a gun. He is Tyler Wingo.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another Bestseller by Baldacci 6 novembre 2013

Once again David Baldacci shows that he is a consummate author of popular thrillers in a page-turning adventure featuring two of his most popular characters, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell - former Secret Service agents turned private investigators. This book will undoubtedly become a pre-Christmas bestseller.

King and Maxwell are driving through a storm when they nearly hit a teenage boy, Tyler Wingo, wandering the highway in the dark. They find that he has fled his nearby home after hearing that his father has been killed in Afghanistan. When they take him home it is clear that Tyler is on his own as there is no love lost with his stepmother.

Next day Tyler contacts them directly and hires them to find out more about his father's death. He tells them he is concerned because he has been told by the Army that there will be no casket as his father's remains are not recognisable. What Tyler doesn't tell them is that he has received a carefully worded email with a coded message from his father - sent after the time he was said to have been killed.

King and Maxwell start to uncover an international incident that begins with the loss of an unknown cargo of 4,800 lbs (what could this be?) in a remote part of Afghanistan and the disappearance of Tyler's father. They discover a cover-up that implicates the Pentagon and even higher and become part of a chase to find Tyler's father, uncover the truth and the conspirators. The chase will put their lives at risk many times and claim many lives before it ends in a deadly showdown .

In this book Baldacci explores the special relationship between Sean and Michelle, and Sean's reaction when she was in hospital with serious gunshot wounds from their last adventure. This time Baldacci also introduces us to Sean's ex-wife Dana, in a more than cameo role as the wife of a 2 star General at the Pentagon. He explores Sean and Dana's past life and their relationship when they meet again.

One of David Baldacci's great strengths is his ability to create and ring the changes between a number of compelling characters (including The Camel Club, John Puller, and my recent favourite, Will Robie). It is great to see the return of King and Maxwell after a break of a couple of years. Their adventures with the Secret Service and as private investigators have been some of Baldacci's most successful thrillers over the last 10 years.

PS. I was browsing next year's pre-orders on Amazon recently and was excited to find that Will Robie (recently featured in "The Hit") will be back at the end of April 2014 in The Target.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Kind of like watching a TNT made-for-TV movie. 19 novembre 2013

I like beef stew. David Baldacci has written a nice big pot of beef stew. Everything works nicely together, but there isn't much spice, so it's kind of bland. The two main characters Sean King and Michelle Maxwell have a fun interaction going on. If you've ever seen the American TV show, King & Maxwell, shown on the TNT network, you will recognize these characters. The storyline is a bit far-fetched, and then there is the teenage boy who is told that his dad was killed, and the teenage girl, and their side story, so this book really has the feel of a made-for-TV movie.

This is a pleasant, light, easy to read, book with plenty of action. It kept my interest. I zipped right through it. This would be a perfect beach book if it was Summer, but since it is getting cold out, I guess I would say that this is a good book to take on your Caribbean cruise. I'm sure that you can pick it up in the airport book seller on the way to catch your plane. You can read it on the deck, while sipping your tropical umbrella drink. All nice and fun. It won't disturb your sleep with nightmares.

I give this book 3.5 Stars out of 5. Which means that it is a pleasant book, and if you like an occasional bowl of stew, I'm sure that you will enjoy this.

I received this Digital Review Copy for free from NetGalley.com.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not a standalone book 18 novembre 2013
Par Cynthia - Publié sur Amazon.com

For me this is a book in two parts. I found the first third of the book mostly ho hum. There were some exciting parts, for instance how they found their teenage client, but there were lots of references to past books cases that left me, if not lost, bored. The only other Baldacci book I've read is "The Innocent" which I found edge of my chair exciting right from the start, a completely different experience than with "King and Maxwell". After the beginning third the action began to pick up and by about half way through I was hooked. It still wasn't as good as "The Innocent" but it is well worth reading if you can get through the opening. Mostly what bored me was the push pull relationship between the two main characters. Their not quite love affair felt too prolonged and plain silly. Again maybe if I'd read some of the previous books in this series that plot element would have been more compelling.

The back and forth action between the Middle East and the US added excitement as did the government and military aspects of the plot. The father/son relationship was well done and believable. Conspiracy theorists will be in their element with this book. It was a stretch for me. As I've said it's probably best if you've read the prior books in this series before tackling this one.

This book feels like it was written in an afternoon. The plot was a fantasy the characters unbelievable and as an adult novel it was a joke. Baldacci's novels have reached a new low

I've read a few reviews here, and I'd like to respond to the people who say you should read the earlier books, as well. This is the first of this series I've read, and I think he did a good job of referencing the backstory, but not making anything dependent upon it.

There are four main things I really disliked about this book.

The first is the author's technique of being too cute. Instead of letting the mystery unfold in a natural way, he would do things like have the narrator deliberately withhold information. "Somebody texted something". The narrator would say that someone was doing something, but pointedly not say what it was. I consider that really sloppy writing, and very irritating, and it put me in a bad mood, to the point that I was looking for faults after that had occurred three or four times.

The second thing that I found really dismaying was how the whole crux of the story revolved around being friends with a computer genius that in a few minutes or hours could crack into anything anywhere, and who is available at the drop of a hat for however long they want to use him. That is completely unrealistic. It's up there with having superman come in and bend the Bad Guys gun barrels into a U. [Reference to 1950s TV, if it's before your time.]

The third thing I disliked was the dialogue. It was the kind of dialog you would see inked into an adventure comic book.

The fourth thing is how very unlikely it is that the opening scene would really happen - that any official agency would send that kind of cargo across hostile territory in the care of one person, armed as poorly as this was purported to be. I could go on about the other outrageous plot holes, from officials conveniently changing their minds, with no evidence, to technical exploits that belong in an Austin Powers flick, but I get tired just thinking about it. Not to mention the double-talk revisionist history of the Iran-Contra affair that conveniently left out a lot of embarrassing but crucial details, like the fact that the whole point was to bribe the Iranians into keeping the American hostages until Reagan was inaugurated.
