Bel ouvrage pour debuter sur les lego ev3. Une version française serait la bienvenue. Je recommande ce livre très bien.

Perfect intro to Lego robotics 4 juillet 2014

I got the EV3 for my 7 year old son as soon as it came out. By accident, we ended up with the educational version. The instructions provided were not clear enough to get us easily up and running. I started buying other EV3 books. They generally assumed that one had done Mindstorms previously. I just did not have time to help my son figure the thing out, and it sat in a box for months.

Then this book arrived. We are up and running, and my son is engrossed and so am I. The author gives terrific detail, and has small projects scattered through each chapter to help develop understanding of each of the features. We work through a few pages each evening, and do one or two projects (e.g., program the EV3 to do a figure 8). These projects are perfect.

As to the educational version vs the home version..... I splurged and got the expansion set. It turns out that this just has a lot of Technics-type structural pieces. It does not have new motors or sensors. The educational packs has all of the motors and sensors of the home version with two exceptions: the remote control sensor and related beacon. I got those thru the lego site. There may be a few add'l pieces that we'll need in the future to build all of the projects in this book, but we are 1/4 the way thru and haven't found them.

I'd also refer you to the book's website, which has a lot of useful information. The author has also kindly responded to specific questions (relating to education vs home versions), and has been quite helpful. So...can't recommend this more enough. I recommend it to all home users as well as school clubs.

Perfect for Homeschool Families! 11 juin 2014

I just got this book in my hands today and I am so glad I made the purchase. I have an 11 year old son who is STEM oriented and while I find the subject fascinating I have absolutely no experience with robotics. I really felt I was going out on a limb when I purchased the EV3 kit. The plans that come with the kit are impressive, but left me feeling lost. I want my son to understand how the components work together and then challenge him to solve problems and make him work for it a bit. This book is exactly what I was looking for!

It starts out at the very beginning - preparing your LEGO set for use (even tips for aligning the stickers), installing the software, etc. Then it moves on to building a simple first robot. And this is where the book goes from useful to fantastic. After presenting a concept there are discoveries (or a series of them) which challenge the reader to use his or her knowledge to create a program to meet a specific goal. An early example is this:

"Discovery #4:
ROBOSPELLER!
Use Move Steering blocks to make a program that enables the EXPLOR3R to drive as if it were drawing the first letter of your name. How many blocks do you need for that letter?"

The discoveries get progressively more challenging and are rated for difficulty (based on the presumption that you started with no knowledge and are moving chronologically through the book) and time estimates.

Lest anyone mistake this for a simplistic book for beginners, I will include a portion of a later discovery (#132) which claims to be challenging and I can only presume is since it's still entirely Greek to me:

"TAMAGOTCHI!
Can you turn LAVA R3X into a lifelike robot with different moods and behaviors? Use the infrared remote to command the robot to walk, talk, eat, and sleep. Create Numeric variables to keep track of the robot's health by monitoring its hunger level, energy level, and happiness.

Make the energy level decrease with each step the robot takes, and make it increase when you command the robot to sleep..." and so on.

I hope to update my review as we work through the book. If you are just getting started with LEGO robotics and are looking for something that walks you through learning while still challenging you, this book looks to be a stellar choice.

The Perfect Book for New Or Apprehensive LEGO Robotics Fans 16 juin 2014
Par Ashley Glennon - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robotics set is generating interest from increasingly broader audiences and The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 DISCOVERY BOOK is the perfect companion to onboard new users with ease.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has previously been afraid to buy an EV3 set or who believes they need a nerd-level-computer science degree to program a robot. This book explains everything in simple, understandable detail. Even Valk acknowledges, “This book assumes you have no previous experience with either building or programming LEGO MINDSTORMS.”

Valk opens the book with a comforting review of what you get in the EV3 box –explaining everything in easy terms—then walks you through building your first robot. The full color, page filling instructions are easy to follow and Valk begins each building exercise with a visual roster of the parts you will need to complete each step.

After teaching you the anatomy of a simple robot and explaining the buttons and functions on the programmable brick, the real fun of the book begins.

In meticulous and ever increasing detail, Valk takes you on a chapter-by-chapter journey of how to use and create programming “blocks” so that you can learn to make your robot(s) do practically anything you want. Of course the book takes a walk-before-you-run approach, and colorful tutorials allow you to learn in stages at your own pace.

I don’t know Valk’s background, but his writing style and chapters come across like he’s a friendly educator. Without being condescending, he frequently summarizes and reminds you of what you are learning, yet never assumes you know what a sensor or gear can do for you until he explains it.

Along your evolutionary journey, you will move from building a three-wheeled explorer to a racecar, then a stick-legged ant, a gaming sketch bot then a robotic arm on tank treads. The book concludes by providing detailed instructions on how to build a mini-humanoid-robot that can walk on two legs, move its arms and head, and eventually talk. Although the agenda sounds ambitious, by the time you have experienced the other models, you will be a pro.

The book features one of the better tables of contents I have seen in a while and is liberal on the use of color and illustrations.

Although this book is geared more towards newbie EV3 users, it would be wrong to assume that experienced builders won’t be challenged. The autonomous grabber arm is a great model for any robotics fan, and Valk’s explanations of multi-tasking, data wires and the advanced features of flow blocks will remind many builders that they can do better.

This is a must-buy book for students, educators or anyone who thinks they can’t build or program LEGO robots.

An essential EV3 book for all builders! 14 juillet 2014

This book review has taken me longer than usual. I have had a copy of this book for a while now, but I literally just finished it. The reason is not what you might expect. To put it simply, I got caught up in the book. I cant recommend this book enough. Laurens Valk did it again!

The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Discovery Book is an essential book for both new and old MINDSTORMS builder alike! First off, the print quality off the book is excellent and this is key. As I spent hours building and referencing the diagrams in the book, it was helpful to have full color and high resolution images. As any LEGO builder knows, some parts are hard to see and the high quality images, coupled with Laurens's excellent building instructions made constructing each bot a breeze.

If you have read any of Laurens's other books, some of the bots might seem familiar. (SNATCH3R for example) EV3 is an awesome new platform and seeing the bots upgraded to take advantage of all the updates. Laurens has bots for everyone, from cars to bugs. Each bot is an extreme joy to construct and program. The book provides excellent programming instructions to get you started, but like any LEGO set, the true excitement comes from building on that idea. For each bot, there were countless moments of "oh I bet I could made it do that!". For example, I added a marker and had it drawing shapes on the floor (and then had SNATCH3R following the line!).

For the seasoned LEGO MINDSTORMS Builder, there are excellent diagram on showing how to build with Technic. This would be super useful for teachers and FIRST LEGO League students. One of the most innovative things Laurens presents is the use of graph paper with LEGO. The grid really works well for figuring out angles and layout bot designs. This makes building complex mechanical designs or even super large robots significantly easier. Laurens uses this technique for more than just triangles, but you will need to get the book to see those!

In case it wasn't clear by this point, I have really enjoyed this book. The book is a few hundred pages of LEGO MINDSTORMS awesome. I have been building robots with LEGO MINDSTORMS for well over a decade and a half and yet I still learned new techniques from The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Discovery Book. I cannot recommend this book enough. Every LEGO MINDSTORMS builder will find something they enjoy in this book. Don't be surprised if you spend countless hours building, programming, and playing. It is an excellent reference that I am sure you will be visiting multiple times. In fact, this book hasn't made it to my shelf yet. I think it might have a permanent home on my desk. Play well!

The one to buy! 17 août 2014

If you are only going to buy one EV3 book this is the one you need to buy! I am an experienced LEGO coach and have lots of experience with Mindstorms NXT and thought I would soon get up to speed with EV3. It was only when I bought this book that I realised that EV3 could do far more then NXT and that I needed to work through this book to learn it all.
Just like Laurens’s first book this book is clearly written, with great diagrams and easy to follow instructions and doesn’t assume that you have any prior knowledge. It covers both basic and advanced programming and explains how to use data wires so clearly that my nine year olds now prefer this method of programming over any other method.
There are 132 Discovery activities that are graded according to difficulty; I use these to teach mixed ability groups in the classroom.
When you buy the book, you also get access to supporting materials on Laurens’s website - http://robotsquare.com/
Make sure that you read the first three chapters before looking at any other, especially if you have used Mindstorms NXT previously. They may appear a bit boring but contain lots of really useful information.
Another fabulous book Laurens; thank you for writing it.
PS. If you buy the book direct from the publishers at http://www.nostarch.com/ev3discovery you get a free eBook of it as well.
