Description de l'ouvrage

16 octobre 2012
When the boy from Ohio was growing up he became obsessed with flight-he piloted a plane before he drove a car. He raptly followed the exploits of Chuck Yeager in the Bell X-1, and wondered if he himself might have the right stuff one day. As he saw the Mercury 7 astronauts assembled, he lamented that he had been born a generation too late for the great adventure into outer space. But Neil Armstrong's chance would come. His colleagues in the Gemini and Apollo programs wondered at his preternatural calm as he piloted through near-death experiences, and then, finally, in 1969, the Eagle landed, and Armstrong took "one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." He was instantly declared an American hero, but was he one? The good news, as thrillingly documented in the pages of this commemorative LIFE tribute, is that Armstrong was exemplary in many ways. From the boyhood years to the life-changing-and world-changing-accomplishment, Armstrong stayed true to his course, and did thereafter until his death in August 2012 at age 82. All of it is here: LIFE's coverage of the space race, the family photos from Ohio, the tick-tock coverage of Apollo 11, the retreat into the peace and quiet-and family life-that always mattered to Neil Armstrong. When he was younger, Armstrong gazed at the astronauts in the pages of LIFE. And now, his story is told there once more-in full.

I purchased and I've read this book and I'm disappointed at the errors of the identification of astronauts in the book. I've counted at least five instances where the caption falsely identified the person in the photo. This puts to question the worth of this book and degrades its collector value. I suggest Life do a better job of either editing or better research when rushing a product to print. One in particular is near the last page of the book where Neil Armstrong is seated next to Mike Collins and they identify him as Buzz Aldrin.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Annoyed by errors... 3 novembre 2012
Par Sikan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Obviously this is a rushed-out book. As other readers have pointed out, it has some what I think are unforgivable errors if it is considered a tribute to such a great man. Most glaring ones include: mistaking Frank Borman for Neil Armstrong on P.33; mistaking Mike Collins for Buzz Aldrin on P.89; falsely dating JFK's moon speech at Rice University to 1963 (should be 1962) when quoting lines from it on P.42

IMHO the book unexpectedly gives too much pages to less relevant stuff, e.g., Apollo 7 occupies two full pages. But of course Apollo 1 surely deserves that much space.

Many photos in this book can be found in Hansen's <First Man> and/or from other sources. The text is not impressing and offers little new info. That said, I believe this is still a must-have for people like me who admire those real heros in the early days of space exploration.

Kind of nice. not many great pictures. Mostly a biography. With a space book you like to see many pictures like behind the scenes.

This is an appropriate retrospective on Neil Armstrong's life, and anyone familiar with Life will understand the approach used, from the outstanding photographs to the well-crafted (although mostly uncredited) writing.

As a space age fan, I was compelled to buy this book for its significance. But after reading it, it is an invaluable document on Life's history with the space age and the after years. Its also a tribute to Mr. Neil Armstrong for his magnificent carreer and cool head with his historic adventure.
