Présentation de l'éditeur

Ugly, remote and inbred, the village of Radnesfield in the Fens has lived with its secrets for centuries.

Inevitably, its inhabitants greet the intrusion of television soap star Neville Fielding and his wife Helena with deep suspicion.

But no one anticipates the storm that will cause havoc in this small, rural community.

Driven by Neville's brutal philandering, Helena divorces him and remarries into one of Radnesfield’s oldest families.

When Neville is murdered she is caught out in a string of lies and confesses to the killing.

But Detective Sergeant Frances Howarth is haunted by a nagging fear for Helena's own safety.

With her release from prison the storm breaks, and Radnesfield’s diseased heart is shockingly exposed…

And 'The Last Act of All' is more shocking than anyone could have imagined.

'The Last Act of All' is a compelling crime thriller that will keep readers hooked from the first page to the last.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderful. 3 octobre 2005

I discovered Templeton with her current book "Cold in the Earth" and promptly ordered as much of her backlist as I could find. It was so worth it! She is a wonderfully atmospheric writer. In this, you feel the inclusiveness of the village and the frustration of Helena. But it's the way in which this story is told I particularly liked. The first "book" is Helena returning from prison and trying to adjust. The second "book" takes us back to her first marriage; moving to the village and up through her trial. The final "book" is the solving of the crimes. I was so engrossed in the story; I didn't suspect the villain until late. I highly recommend this book and this author.

I was unprepared for the back story on that person. And it was a really good one. For that reason I had to give this story a full five stars. Also I love the murder mysteries set in a small English backwater village. This one had a particularly good twist in that although it has the obligatory landed gentry going to seed, the main characters are a particularly vulgar group of TV serial actors and their accompanying retinue. Then you have all of the oddball people that one finds in small in-bred communities all over the world. Overall this was a straight-forward English countryside murder mystery and it is well written and very consuming. A wonderful read.

I really loved this book. It's tightly plotted and the characters are interesting and well drawn. I liked the interaction between characters and the book was fast paced and hard to put down.

Helena was charged with her husband's murder, and agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter. She served her sentence, and returned home to try to resume her shattered life.

But during the trial, Detective Sergeant Frances Haworth became convinced that the truth had not been uncovered, and that there are sinister forces at work in Radnesfield. The slow work of getting the facts out of the inbred, suspicious denizens of the village is well written and satisfying.

The author has a fabulous ability to create unique characters while employing the "English countryside mystery" formula which makes this book as much a psychological drama as a mystery story. I've noticed other reviewers have given plenty of plot detail, so I won't repeat them. If you are a fastidious consumer of mysteries in the sense that you like them well-written and well-plotted and don't confuse plot with pages of combat and/or gore, get this. It's really well done.
