Présentation de l'éditeur

I never really knew what misery was until the day I was kidnapped and sold for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Two months later, I'm at a brothel in Rio when I meet Daniel Hays. He says he's here to save me, but can I trust him? All I know of him are his sarcastic retorts and his tendency to solve every dispute with his gun. He's also the only safe thing in my world, and I know it's wrong to fall in love with him, but I can't seem to help myself. He says he'll protect me until his last breath but I don't know if I should believe him or even if I can.

For the last eighteen months, I've had one goal that has dictated every action I've taken. I've left the Army, turned paid hit man, and have befriended criminals all across the globe to find my kidnapped sister. In every brothel I raid or every human trafficking truck I stop, I hope the next face I find is my sister's. In a hidden brothel in Rio, I find Regan Porter, bruised by not broken and still sane despite her weeks in captivity. I should leave her behind or send her home because the last thing either of us needs right now is to get involved. But with every passing minute, I find I can't let her go.

Please note: this contains some scenes that sensitive readers may find upsetting or triggering.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the best, sweetest and most tender alpha-heroes I've read 25 mars 2014

After reading book 1 (Last Hit (Hitman)), I was worried how Regan's story would be handled. I'm picky about how an abused/raped heroine is handled. I need it to not be glossed over, but I also don't want to be sad or upset the entire story. I need to believe that my heroine is ready for romance, and I think Regan's progression from a scared woman who distrusts men to that of a woman ready to trust and feel intimacy again, with Daniel, felt right to me.

Their romance is slow in the beginning, and caring, and I can't think of a better hero to offer passion, safety and kindness to a heroine like Regan. The sexy times don't really happen until about half-way through the story, and I liked that a lot. It set just the right tone for me. And when they are together, it was hot and sexy because Daniel was patient and giving. And it's so odd to say that, since he's an assassin, but there's so much to like and love about this hero.

He's good and bad, whatever is necessary to get a job done, but you never forget that there is something ultimately noble about Daniel. He's that alpha male protector, and I thought he was great, one of the best, sweetest and most tender heroes I've read in a while. Just the man for a woman like Regan, damaged but not broken, vulnerable but strong. These two were made for each other, and I believed every moment they had together.

Great chemistry with this couple and a sweet intimacy, too. It's so hot to read a sex scene that is both erotic and caring. There's a nice amount of action/danger in the story, but I never thought it overshadowed my romance. It built, growing stronger and deeper, and that's really my main impression of this book 2: a sweet, caring, and hot romance. Very happy with how this felt, and am really looking forward to the next book in the series. Should be very interesting, to say the least!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Authors took a different approach with it and it worked brilliantly 25 mars 2014

As many people know, I am a giant fan of the first book in the Hitman series, Last Hit. It was actually on my top ten list of 2013, so of course I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next, Last Breath. While each book can be read as a standalone, we do get to meet the hero and heroine of Last Breath in the previous book, Last Hit (they didn’t meet each other yet.) So I knew going into this one that it was going to be darker because the last time we saw Regan she was being raped and taken off to be sold on the black market. Not only was it darker, but it’s more emotional and made me absolutely bloodthirsty.

The authors take us balls deep from page one ripping out our hearts. We are thrust right into the middle of a rape and into the mind of our heroine, Regan, doing her best to disconnect to what’s happening to her. It’s horrible. I’m 2 pages in and I can’t breathe. Regan has started to get somewhat used to her life of being a sex slave being chained to a bed and I, the reader, am seeing her in survival mode. Men coming in and out of her room, inspecting her, raping her, while Regan was trying to survive. I felt like the authors were trying to make me angry. They were building me up to fight, to want blood, so when the time came I would want everyone to die. So what’s more perfect than a hero who has no qualms about killing?

Daniel, our hitman, is on a mission not only to find his sister, but he also told Nick & Daisy (couple from first book) he would find Regan for them. He heads to Rio where he pretends to be in the market to want to sleep with American blonde women. When he finally finds Regan he makes his move to save her. His plan was to just drop her at the embassy, but it seems our main villain, Mr. Freeze, (the man that wants Regan so he can use and break her down) has friends in high places and isn’t letting her get away so easily.

Daniel may have been a deadly killer, but he is the light of the story. I find him a hard character to explain because it’s simply the little things he does for her that makes you love him so fiercely. For one… he never gave two s***s she was a sex slave. He found her to be the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. I loved when he would catch himself staring at her legs then chastise himself because, well he did just save her from a sex house. When Regan would start to get down on herself he would kind of poke at her to get that fire back inside her so she was ready to fight…. And fight they did.

While trying to escape the city there is lot of action and twist and turns. In the midst of all this Daniel is fighting his attraction to Regan. Regan is trying to understand who she is now and how broken she is on the inside and if she will ever be able to be with someone ever again. Regan isn’t sure what to think of Daniel. Even though she doesn’t trust him at first she knows her chances are better with him than on her own. I found Regan’s thought processes to be the most interesting and intriguing part of the story. She is by no means your typical rape victim. She has been conditioned to barter sexually… her freedom for her… her protection for sex. The book pushed my own boundaries about what should/shouldn’t be acceptable from victim’s mentality. The authors took a different approach with it and it worked brilliantly. They both fight their attraction for each other somewhat. I was shocked that Regan was able to move on sexually so fast, but I got it and it made sense. Like I said before, she is a different kind of victim and the build up to them was realistic with cause and reason. At times Regan would snap and even one time thinking that hiding behind her bad attitude was all she had anymore. This is what I loved about her. Instead of breaking down she fought and made me think of that saying "Sometimes being a b!tch is all a woman has to hold onto.” I found Regan to be empowering.

One thing that really stood out to me about this story was my bloodlust. I don’t ever recall in my reading experience getting off on death like I did in this story. I was craving it at points. One time I thought they were going to let someone live and I got super mad. I wanted blood to paint the walls and possibly have Daniel and Regan have sex in it. I know it's gross… sorry, not sorry. While the sex I just depicted might make you want to vomit a little, their sex was on the super sweet side.

In my opinion, this is completely different than the first book in the series, Last Hit. While there seems to be some innocence to the first book there is none in this. The lack of innocence in this one made it a more difficult book to pull off, but the authors did it. I’m really looking forward to the next. I’ve heard whispers of who is getting the next book and I’m not going to say because it might be kind of a spoiler for this book's ending, but if the rumors are true the next book is going to be quite humorous.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 took my breathe away 24 mars 2014

Wow, Wow, Wow, this book was amazing. From beginning to end I was hooked and I don't just mean yeah I want to read this book no I mean I NEED to read this book why is everyone disturbing me with life, and kids and husband wanting food, and job expecting me to come to work doesn't everyone know I am wrapped up in Last Breathe right now and I DON'T WANT TO BE DISTURBED. Thats how much I needed to read this book. I loved book one I was upset when it ended and impatiently waiting for book two, I knew this book would be good, it just had to because no book could be written so well and have such a griping story with great characters and then have book two fall flat, so when Jen Frederick asked me to read this book I was over the moon happy.

In book one Regan was kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery and Daniel was sent by Nick and Daisy to find her and bring her home. Now months later Regan has endured more than anyone should, at first she was sure she would be rescued but as time went on she wondered if she had been forgotten. Daniel has been on a mission, his sister was kidnapped and sold and he has been on her trail since then knowing that he can't give up till he finds her and brings her home. So when Nick asked him to find Regan along the way he agreed. Daniel has scene enough in the years trying to locate his sister, but when he see's Regan she surprises him, not only is she beautiful but she also is strong and though everything she has endured she's still a fighter.

When Regan is finally freed she is both happy, scared, and leery of Daniel but agrees to put her trust in him instead of go out on her own. Soon Daniel and Regan find out that the man who bought Regan isn't happy she was taken and wants he back. Now not only does Daniel have to find his sister and get them all home but he has to keep Regan and himself alive. The more time they spend together the easier it is for Regan to see Daniel isn't another man to hurt her but a man who loves her and a man she can trust, and the two begin to fall in love, but new revolutions are brought to light about the man who has Daniels sister and who she really is, and when Daniel thinks he can finally have it all they may not make it out alive.

I loved this book, I mean I really loved this book. It's one of those books you don't want to end because so many books can never be as great as this one. The beginning of this book is gut wrenching and painful and unbelievable sad (please read the warning) but it was written so well and the strength that Regan shows is just beautiful. I loved Regan she had tons to deal with and she did it all beautifully she was so strong and watching her learn to fall in love and trust Daniel after reading what she endured was even better.

I had Daniel all figured out in my mind after book one but he was so much more. The love he had for his family was amazing and that he saw Regan and not what was done to her was so awesome. Daniel was another bad boy just like Nick, I have always loved the bad/good guy thing and thats defiantly what Daniel was and it works and works well in this book. I mean who doesn't love a man who will do anything to protect those he loves, and will die before he lets anything happen to them.

I also found the storyline about sex trafficking very interesting and I think this was very well written but still gritty and real. Both Jessica Clare and Jen Frederick didn't shy away from the ugly in this book and thats what made it so good, and made the ending that much better because to sugar coat this book would have ruined it. I also think they were very brave to tackle this topic and they not only did it well but blew my mind with how well they wrote it. I can't wait for book three there are several people I hope we get to see more of as well as more of Regan and Daniel. I also love that we got more of Nick and Daisy and that the new characters we get introduced to were just as interesting as the old ones. This book was just amazing plain and simple, I loved it from beginning, middle to the end and everything in between.
*thank you Jen Frederick for so kindly giving me a copy of this book to review

3.0 étoiles sur 5 I love these authors, but this was a difficult to read in spots 27 mars 2014

I have to admit, I had a difficult time reading this story. Don't get me wrong, I love these authors, as usual the book was well written, I loved the characters, and the plot was fast paced and unpredictable. Where I had my problem, was with the premise of taking someone who has gone through what Regan went through, and making it in to a romance story. It was hard to read at times.

We first met Regan and Daniel in Last Hit (which I absolutely loved). Regan happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was taken along with her roommate, Daisy, by the Russian Mob. Daisy was rescued by her boyfriend, but Regan was taken from her kidnappers and sold to a brothel in Rio.

Daniel has been searching these same brothels looking for another blonde American woman, his sister, when he comes across Regan. Knowing who she is and that she is Daisy's friend, he rescues her. He tries to send her home via the American Embassy, but someone waiting outside the embassy, scares her more than the hell she's just come from. So she asks to stay with Daniel. The last thing Daniel needs is a damaged female in tow while he is trying to work. But he takes her, and vows to keep her safe.

I get that the authors were trying to make Regan a strong woman. The fact that she was kept drug and disease free, and her new "owner" wanted her clean but broken, probably helped her keep her sanity. But after months of going through what she went through, even a strong woman would have trouble learning to trust and even more troubles touching any man. That was my only negative issue with the story. The romance part came too soon. It was just too quick. Even though it was not Daniel initiating the contact. Daniel was a complete gentleman.

That being said, I will continue to buy books in this series. We get a glimpse of the couple in the next book. Not sure how that's going to go. Vasily and Naomi are intriguing. I look forward to seeing how these two get along.
