Présentation de l'éditeur

I have been a contract killer since I was a boy. For years I savored the fear caused by my name, the trembling at the sight of my tattoos. The stars on my knees, the marks on my fingers, the dagger in my neck, all bespoke of danger. If you saw my eyes, it was the last vision you’d have. I have ever been the hunter, never the prey. With her, I am the mark and I am ready to lie down and let her capture me. Opening my small scarred heart to her brings out my enemies. I will carry out one last hit, but if they hurt her, I will bring the world down around their ears.

I’ve been sheltered from the outside world all my life. Homeschooled and farm-raised, I’m so naive that my best friend calls me Pollyanna. I like to believe the best in people. Nikolai is part of this new life, and he’s terrifying to me. Not because his eyes are cold or my friend warns me away from him, but because he’s the only man that has ever seen the real me beneath the awkwardness. With him, my heart is at risk..and also, my life.

Mini Excerpt

I watch her through my bathroom window. I've placed one of my four rented chairs in here for that express purpose. I tell myself it is not creepy, as the American girls would say, because I watch everyone. But really I watch only her.

I cannot see everything. I've never seen her nude. I've never seen inside her shower. Smartly there is no window there. But I can see her bedroom and her living room and beyond that, with my scope, her kitchen. I know her schedule. When she gets up in the morning, when she returns to her apartment. If she were a mark, I could've killed her a dozen times over by now and been in the wind.

She throws her bag onto her bed and then lies down next to it. It takes many muscles to smile, much less to frown but only a few to pull the trigger. I peer down the scope and place my crosshairs over her forehead. Puff, dead.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 GRIPPING ROMANCE 2 décembre 2013

This is the story of two people who were both brought up on the boundaries of society. Nikolai lived on the streets as a child, taken in by a violent gang and trained to kill. Daisy whose mother was murdered has been living a life controlled by her father. That is till she escapes.

Daisy manages to find a room in a run down apartment building, but the freedom from her former life outweighs her less than salubrious surroundings. What Daisy doesn't know is that she has caught the eye of the man living in the building oposite. Nikolai is drawn to Daisy and watches her whenever possible. He manages to engineer a meeting with her, and things move forward between them from there.

A fascinating and compellingly written romance that is quite different from my normal romance books. Nikolai is a cold blooded killer. He kills for money, and unlike tattooed heroes in other books his have a meaning to those who know what to look for. They tell his story. Daisy has zero experience of men, at 21 she's never even been kissed. Nikolai struggles with what Daisy's reaction will be to what he does. But it's not long before it intrudes and puts them both in danger. There are some scenes other readers might find are not for them, mainly violence. But this is an engrossing story with well drawn characters.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 There was not a thing I didn't like about this book, and there was EVEYTHING that I loved, 5 stars is not enough 4 décembre 2013

"if you do not want me to break your wrist with one squeeze of my hand, you will do two things immediately, First you will remove your hand from my woman's purse. Second, you will remove your hand from my shirt. It's attached to the body that belongs to the owner of the purse." *sigh*

WOW, WOW, WOW I love this book, 5 stars is nowhere near enough stars for this book. If you times them by 100 it still wouldn't be enough. it blew me away and made me want to weep when I finished it. yes it really was that good. It's very obvious that Jessica Clare and Jen Frederick are an amazing writing team who can pump out insanely amazing books. I can't wait for book two. They are going on my stalk list so I can get book two the second it is released.

Nick(or Nikolai) is a hit man and while tracking his next hit he finds Daisy, she lives in the building next to him and he finds himself watching her more and more, till one day he see's a man touching her laundry. While stopping him Nick comes face to face with Daisy. Daisy had a loving family till her mother was killed, then her life turned upside down her father became scared of everything and soon their home became her prison. With no other choice Daisy leaves and starts a new life never thinking that she would find anyone like Nick.

When they meet neither can deny the attraction and with Daisy's clothes "accidentally" ruined by Nicolai, Nick convinces her to go shopping with him. And so starts Nick and Daisy's relationship soon Nick and Daisy are falling in love and discovering all life has to offer. But Nick hasn't given up his profession so he finds himself keeping more and more from Daisy. With his mentors death he soon finds himself the target and it will be a race against time to not only kill those guilty but keeping Daisy safe.

Where to start with all the things I loved about this book, I guess it would be easier to tell you what I didn't nothing. But the very best, wonderful awesome thing about this book would be........ Nick. He may be the most possessive, crazy, stalker, in lover hero I have ever read about ever in my whole entire life. No joke he was insane, I love him and wish that I could take him home. Daisy WAS IT for him no one else would do and all he wanted to do was make her happy and safe she deserved nothing but the very best in his eyes. Nick wasn't even ok with men being by her or looking at her, and when he thought he may loose her his plan was to wreak pain and death in his wake did I mention I loved Nick (seriously there was not a thing that I didn't love about him). Daisy was a great heroine she was strong and determined to find happiness.

The flow of the story was perfect, I never felt like the story was dragged out or that useless filler was added. I was riveted to this book and never wanted to put it down. This amazing writing duo work brilliantly together and did an incredible job writing not only Daisy's point of view but Nikolai, I believed Nick's point of view completely it felt like he was real and that he was really telling his story, it was stunning. I never wanted this book to end. We get a great introduction into the characters of book two, as I was reading I hoped that they would get their own book and was so happy when I saw that they would be next. I hope this series continues for a long time, and that the series just gets better(though I'm not even sure if that's humanly possible. This is a must read.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A sexy, dark hero who takes being bad-boy up a notch 3 décembre 2013
Par S. Richards - Publié sur
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
If you love a hero all dark and brooding, tatted up, and rough, but still a man in need of love, then you ought to love Nick. Yes, his character is both villain and hero, but that is what I love most about him. Nick would kill to have you, kill to keep you, and kill to protect you. He's so sexy and raw, brutal and harsh; a man whose actions are dark and whose heart feels unworthy and tainted, but a man willing to do anything for the woman he loves.

Nick is ruthless and lethal, but he's also completely and helplessly in love with the heroine. For me, there is almost nothing better than that. Seeing a dark hero fall in love, wanting it all, but thinking he deserves nothing good or kind in life. And why would he? He's a hard man who's lived a hard, uncompromising life. A Ukrainian boy taken in and raised by a Russian crime family, trained to be a killer for hire. Now, in his early twenties, he's still being shaped by that world and that code of conduct, but then he meets Daisy on an American assignment, and that's all it takes for his cold, needy heart to thaw.

To Nick, Daisy is all that is good in the world, and all that his own world is lacking. A sweet, virginal heroine and a dark hero willing to crush anyone who hurts his woman. I loved how much he wanted the heroine. He really needed her and wanted to be loved by her. He was so gentle with her and patient, too. A hard, rough man being loving and sweet in his own way. Very good to read.

Dual POV; some sweet and sexy moments; a little action with some danger and violence; and a complete romance and happiness for h/H. The book does leave off with two other characters very much in play for the next book in the series. Another dark hero for that one as well, probably even darker than Nick.

Have you ever read a book that you really liked, but when someone asks what you liked about it you don’t know what to say? Well, that’s me with Last Hit. I really liked it, but for some reason I really had trouble getting my thoughts down on paper. I’m not sure if it’s because there’s just too much to say or because I don’t know where to start.

Both Daisy and Nick were sheltered from the world in very different ways. Daisy knows very little of what exists outside the 4 walls of her farmhouse. Nick knows nothing aside from his job and the “family” he’s been part of since he was a boy. Daisy’s naïve and Nick’s a killer. Two people could not be more opposite if they tried. But, are they really that different once you look really look beneath the surface?

Both Daisy and Nick are “A little mentally twisted, a little sick in the head, and a lot lonely and needing of love.” When you really strip it down to the core, Daisy and Nick have been searching for someone to love without actually realizing it. Neither one knows how to be in a relationship, but together they fumble though and try to figure how the whole relationship thing is supposed to work. Then, the story took a quick left turn, throwing me for a major loop. All of a sudden, Nick’s life Daisy knows absolutely nothing about comes barreling in and introduces itself with no apologies. I knew it would happen at some point, but the intensity in which it happened caught me off guard. What happens when Nick’s secret life sucks Daisy in is nothing short of breathtaking.

Last Hit is definitely darker and sexier than what I’m used to from Jen Frederick. And I. LOVED. EVERY. SINGLE. MINUTE. OF. IT. It is was erotic, exciting, intense, and emotional. I love stories with broken characters but Daisy and Nick are two of my favorites. I love the connection the pair have – you can feel just how much they need and love each other.

When I read a book, it’s all about how it makes me feel and how drawn I am to the characters. Jen & Jessica create a lovable killer in Nick. How is that even possible??? I think the dual POV has a lot to do with it. If I wasn’t in the mind of Nick, I’m not sure I’d feel as strongly as I do for his character – don’t get me wrong, he’d still be irresistible, just in a different way. He’s a killer, but the way he’s written makes you see WHO he is and not WHAT he is – it’s actually quite remarkable. Nick’s beautiful, confident, and always in control, but the fact that he has no idea how to pursue Daisy is so unbelievably sweet. His awkwardness with words around her just made me want to jump in the pages and give him a big hugs of encouragement. And, there is just something about Nick’s broken English that makes it adorable and endearing.

Even though the story for me centered around Nick, I have to at least say something about Daily since she is the sole reason Nick opened his heart. Daisy may be bit naïve by believing the best in people, but that’s exactly what Nick needed. Her innocence is what drew Nick to her, and it’s what made me like her so much, too. Despite not knowing much about life, Daisy is a strong and smart woman. For a naïve character, I truly did like her.

I have to admit that lately I have been totally obsessed with bad boys… and I mean BAD ones! So to say I thoroughly enjoyed Last Hit is an understatement. I had no clue this was to be a series, so I was more than excited when I found out. I am looking forward to Daniel and Regan’s story.

If you’re looking for an obsessive, sexy, broken and killer BAD BOY, go grab LAST HIT!!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Edgy, Dark, and Thrilling romance 4 décembre 2013
Par Chelsea C - Publié sur

I haven't read a book by Jessica Clare yet but I am in love with Jen's NA novels, the Woodlands series, so I was excited for the chance to read and review Last Hit. It is so different from Jen's previous writing but damn if I didn't love it, so I will most definitely be reading a Jessica Clare book soon. Last Hit is an edgy, dark romance with a thrilling and action packed plot. If it were a movie, it'd be a mix between Wanted and Beauty and the Beast.

Daisy is a young woman who has been sheltered by her father for her whole life. He is extremely agoraphobic and paranoid and he has kept Daisy from really experiencing life. She loves her father but she wants so much more. She wants to go to college and make friends and experience pleasure. I really liked Daisy. She is definitely inexperienced and naïve but she isn’t completely clueless. She has been controlled by her father her entire life and she wants to take control. She is definitely a character that really grows throughout the book. I loved the way she handled Nick and the risks that she took to come out on her own. She definitely proved she isn’t some naïve country bumpkin in the end and she has some real guts.

I adored Nikolai! He comes off a bit creepy and stalkerish in the beginning but that's just Nick. When it comes to normal social behavior, he's a bit inept but it's kind of freaking cute. He is this hardcore, stealthy, smooth hitman but with Daisy he is awkward and unsure. He doesn’t know how to act around a woman that he has true feelings for and it was entertaining to watch him learn. Nick has never known true love and affection and that has made him an excellent hitman but when it comes to Daisy, he doesn’t know how to act. His attempts to protect and woo her would normally come off as controlling and psycho but being in Nick’s head helps understand where he is coming from. He can spy through my window anytime.

I felt pulled into Last Hit immediately and I was intrigued by both Daisy and Nikolai. They are so different yet so perfect for each other. Nick is immediately enthralled with Daisy from the first time he spies her through his scope. She is the light to his dark and her mere fascination with life buries into his soul. This is where “Beauty and the Beast” comes in because Daisy is the sweet, naïve Belle who thaws the beast’s (Nick) heart and teaches him compassion and love. I loved how open Daisy was to experiencing new things and letting Nick teach her. She should definitely have been weary of Nick’s behavior but his intentions with her were always pure, no matter what he did, and I think she could always see this. By the time all the truths came out, she had already fallen for Nick and she was too deep in.

“I embrace that small, broken part of who I am. If Nick is darkness with a kernel of light inside him, I am light with the matching kernel of darkness. It’s what makes us so perfecto for one another.”

Just as Nick starts contemplating a future with Daisy, shit hits the fan in the name of Nick’s profession. This is where Wanted comes in because I half expected Nick to go all James McAvoy on everyone’s ass and mess some people up! This is where the plot got a little dark and whole lot real. Daisy strength and character really shined at this point and I liked how she handled herself in her situation. She finds out the truth about Nick and yes, it scares her and she feels foolish and deceived but Nick still protects her and cares for her and she can see that he is still the same man she fell in love with, despite what he does for a living. I was so nervous she wouldn’t be able to look past the hitman part to see the real Nick inside. He finally sees a future for himself and he would do anything to be with Daisy.

I loved the wrap of with the plot and the romance between Daisy and Nick. I love her unwavering acceptance and love of him no matter what. He is so insecure about himself and Daisy sees that and works to make him see himself the way she does. The way Nick helps Daisy’s dad was so sweet and the bond he forged with him forever cements him into Daisy’s heart. I really loved this book and the romance and thrill was both endearing and exciting.
