Présentation de l'éditeur

A quiet, haunted man, Paul Cable walked away from a lost cause hoping to pick up where he left off. But things have changed in Arizona since he first rode out to go fight for the Confederacy. Two brothers—Union men—have claimed his spread and they're not about to give it back, leaving Cable and his family no place to settle in peace. It seems this war is not yet over for Paul Cable. But no one's going to take away his land and his future—not with their laws, their lies, or their guns.

Rescuing a frightened woman from an attack by a one-armed man, Confederate soldier Paul Cable learns that his lands have been taken over by the Union army, and vows to regain his property or die trying. Reprint.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 It's Mine and I'll Fight to Get it Back 2 mai 2003

Paul Cable survives the civil war to find out someone has taken over his little ranch. It takes all of his wit and ability, determination and guts to fight back so he and his family can finally live. Leonard is a great writer. The person who rated this poorly should open his eyes and mind when he reads.

I like Elmore Leonard, and I have read almost all of his other books. That's why it's hard to believe he wrote this one.

The characters are caricatures. The "hero" is a battle-hardened war vet who previously stood off hostile Native Americans, basically by outwitting them at their own game of stalking, tracking, ambushing, and face-to-face combat. But in the time frame of the action, he has somehow forgotten everything he supposedly learned. He is so naive, gullible, off-guard and generally oblivious that it's impossible to care what happens to him. With a couple of exceptions, no matter what the situation, he manages to be the victim. People get the drop on him, corner him in dark barns and cellars, and generally spend their free time beating him to a pulp. He allows himself to be set up and manipulated by a teen-aged girl. And so on, and on, and on. Maybe he's a masochist; this is the only logical explanation.

I kept forcing myself to read on, but after yet another bone-head move by the hero, I couldn't stand it and quit. If you don't care about the main character, it's really hard to care what happens to him or how things turn out.

Another point: ranchers, farmers and people living in primitive dangerous situations tend to own dogs. Yet in this book, they don't. Especially the hero.

This is like a parody of Leonard's good books. Apparently the publisher decided to get sales based on the author's name; if written by a new or lesser-known author this book wouldn't have been published at all.

This is a particularly good story of the old west by Elmore Leonard. I'm a fan of most of the western writers and especially those who include the drama of "good against evil" and its emotional impact on the characters. I live in the North but have spent some good times in New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California. I love well written stories about the Southwest especially those with interesting (and accurate) historical information about the people and places of the Old West. I've read nearly ever book by Louie L'Amour and Zane Grey, some more than once. In fact, an interesting experience for me with regard to "Last Stand at Saber River" is that I saw the movie first and left the theater convinced it was a Louis L'Amour story. Obviously I didn't read the credits. I enjoyed the story so much on the screen I decided to read the book itself. Well, big surprise, the book was actually written by Leonard and I loved the book as much, if not better, than the film. Since that experience, I've read several of Leonard's other westerns (haven't tried one of his mystery's yet) and have enjoyed.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Another winner by Elmore Leonard with a strong, silent hero 26 janvier 2015

Another winner by Elmore Leonard. In these early works he seems to favor the strong, silent hero. His heroes take a lot of abuse but show restraint in responding until they are pushed to their limits. He also shows that his hero in this book can take an adversarial relationship and turn it around. In this book, his hero, Paul Cable, is a rebel soldier returning home just before the end of the Civil War. He finds that his house and land have been occupied by a group of men that are supplying fresh horses to the Union Army. Instead of going in to this situation with guns blazing, he seeks to work it out with the group through many different avenues. By the end of the book, we find Cable and his adversary uniting against a common enemy. Leonard ends the book abruptly leaving us to speculate how the future will turn out for these two likeable, but amazingly similar, characters.

A very readable Western about a range war in Arizona at the tail end of the Civil War between a returning Confederate soldier and ranchers working with the Union Army. Excellent as a beach book or for an airplane flight. What I have come to enjoy especially about Elmore Leonard's early Westerns is the way he manufactures multiple inter character conflicts. It's never simply one group of characters against another group because each set of alliances includes characters with agendas at cross purposes with those of seeming allies. That makes for crackajack plots. Plus, Last Stand at Saber River has one of Leonard's best early villains, a sagebrush Iago of delicious venality.
