Crisply plush, the book is likely to seduce, though it may ultimately be more useful as escape or fantasy than as a manual: the pictures are so tranquil, they lead one to forget about the work that went into creating these interiors-and that one would need to reproduce.

The late Laura Ashley, who popularized the English country look of cabbage roses and overstuffed chairs, continues to influence home design through her company's retail stores and home furnishings designs.
