Présentation de l'éditeur

"Lead With Respect is a terrific book that puts the elements of genuine motivation into a broader context and helps leaders translate those principles into action."

—Daniel H. Pink, author of TO SELL IS HUMAN and DRIVE

"The Ballé books are a great way to get started or to speed up your pace of transformation, personal and organizational."

—Jim Womack, Founder of Lean Enterprise Institute

In their new business novel Lead With Respect, authors Michael and Freddy Ballé reveal the true power of lean: developing people through a rigorous application of proven tools and methods. And, in the process, creating the only sustainable source of competitive advantage—a culture of continuous improvement.

In this engaging and insightful story, CEO Jane Delaney of Southcape Software discovers from her sensei Andy Ward that learning to lead with respect enables her to help people improve every day. “For us, lean is all about challenging yourself and each other to find the right problems, and working hard every day to engage people in solving them,” he says.

Lead With Respect’s timely message brings a new understanding of lean. While lean has become essential for companies to compete in today’s global economy, most practitioners see it as a rigorous focus on process to produce higher quality goods and services—a limited understanding that fails to realize the true power of this approach. This new novel by the Ballés, the third in a series that includes Shingo Research Award-winners The Gold Mine and The Lean Manager, breaks new ground by sharing huge amounts of practical information on the most important yet least understood aspect of lean management: how to develop people through a rigorous application of lean tools. You’ll learn:

• How to apply Lead With Respect attitudes to the lean tools you are using now so that you develop a truly sustainable lean culture.
• What specific steps to follow to make lean leadership behaviors daily habits.
• How to manage with respect through the emotion, conflict, tension, and self-doubt that you’ll face during a lean transformation.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Respect for People & Continuous Improvement - amen 6 août 2014

OK, I'd better disclose my bias up front - "The Gold Mine" and "Lean Leader" are two of my favorite and most recommended books to colleagues when they ask me about lean. It's not because the concepts are so much better than other resources, or that I find the story lines riveting - it's because they're so spot on their portrayal of lean as it should be, rather than (as Mark Graban likes to say) L.AM.E. or lean as mistakenly explained. I'm also a fan of the novel format, especially when I pick out a book to loan to others not familiar with lean. If you're not, then the book may just not be your thing.

So I had some pretty high hopes for Michael and Freddy Balle's latest addition to the storyline: "Lead with Respect: A Novel of Lean Practice" and I must say I was not disappointed.

This latest addition takes us to a nice transition from the manufacturing floor - to the software development world. As I also, have moved from manufacturing companies to the service industry (which includes software development as an internal competency) over the past couple of years I must say the book certainly struck home. Reading about the stand up meetings, eagerness to jump to full system upgrades, missed milestones and re-releases, rework and scope creep due to poor user requirements...if you're in this environment now, this should all sound familiar.

In a cord familiar with the concepts of A3 management or the Toyota KATA, there is absolute emphasis on the need to PRACTICE. (no sorry, reading the book isn't enough)

Which is probably why I appreciate this book, especially for introducing others to lean. No endless discussions about kanban or poke-yoke or standardized work - nope this gets to the real heart of lean - respect, the scientific method, and humility. Everything else is just a countermeasure. Learn and teach the behaviors - it's something your competitors can't steal.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A journey to the heart of lean. 31 juillet 2014
Par Daniel Jones - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
This is one of the most important books on lean thinking and practice in the last few years. If you read their previous books The Gold Mine and The Lean Manager you will have not only read gripping stories but also found a very powerful framework for understanding the right way to think and act lean. This book takes you further in understanding one of the most puzzling aspects of TPS and Lean, namely what Toyota really means by respect for people and how this is the foundation for learning by doing and continuous improvement. It brings to life the journey to develop your own skills through developing the capabilities of your subordinates which lies ate the hear of lean. If you are going to study lean with your colleagues then this is the book I would use. The Machine that Changed the World was the clarion call to lean, Lean Thinking outlined the principles of lean thinking and Leading with Respect will change the way you manage!

Toyota's model is continuous improvement and respect for people. The respect for people side has always been a little more difficult to understand. That comes into focus in the new business novel by Michael Balle, and his dad Freddy, called Lead With Respect. Like their other books, it is told as a story that pulls you in feeling like you are living the learning process. In this book the CEO of a software company ends up being taught by a representative from her main customer the meaning of respect. The customer has adopted lead with respect as a company culture. Even though the software company is doing a poor job on their software they give the CEO a chance to turn things around... if she is willing to learn. Reluctantly she does and we live through with her the struggles of learning how to lead with respect. In the process we get educated in a vivid and entertaining way. Suddenly "lean with respect" is not simply a mantra, but comes to life. A great read, and as other reviewers write, a very important book for people in all walks of life.

This book is highly accessible by everyone, straightforward, full of practical methods and behaviors. Many will wish they had read this lean book before all others. Fortunately for the majority of the world that dream is still possible.

Each chapter contains gems and nuggets of wisdom born from the Freddy & Michael's years of experience in implementing, teaching and helping others practice. This is not theory or warm-and-fuzzy, it is a jump-start to lean leadership.

It contains ideas that are challenging enough to help leaders grow themselves, and with persistence, to develop their people. Lean leads to prosperity through people and this book lays out the nuts and bolts of it.

Lead With Respect is sure to become required reading for aspiring lean leaders. Discussion groups will use this book as the basis for constructive dialogue on advancing lean leadership skills and practice.

Pick up and read this book, you can't go wrong.
