I expected this supposedly new edition to be significantly updated with the latest brain research and new methods of teaching using TPR with technology. Instead, it's the same 20+ year old book with a few added sections. The class lesson plans, for example, are over 20 years old and include references to chalkboards and fruit for 19c per pound! There is nothing about technology and its uses, no new lesson plans, virtually nothing new.
Very disappointing.

I am still enjoying the book. As an amateur Psychologist, I have studied German, Korean, and French and have utilized the skills and concepts in the book. They are very researched based and are this should be required reading.

This is the quintessential book about TPR. If you're new to this whole approach,then, this is the book for you. I might suggest that you shouldn't even apply TPR as a teacher before reading this book first.

The book is divided in four main parts: In the first one, Asher explains all the ordeal of investigations and experiments that lead him to develope what would later become TPR and all the project that he did after that.

In the second part, Asher goes into great lenght to present you all the empirical research and scientific evidence that back TPR up and also he goes into great lenght to present you the main cognitive theory that explains why the TPR is so effective.

The third part is a big Q&A section in which Asher answers a lot of common yet interesting questions about TPR with quite a lot of detail.

Finally, the fourth part is a big curriculum design that will help you create a 52 class language course using TPR. Asher narrates you how an english teachr used TPR to teach english to a group of students (all of them with different linguistic backgrounds). And he also specifies what she did in every single lesson.

One common misconception that people have is that you can't teach grammar using TPR. This is false. At the end of the course, the students were able to internalize and use the imperative, the present tense, the past tense, the present progressive and the future. This book gives you a lot of ideas on how you can teach grammar with TPR.

Another misconception it takes too long for the students to start speaking, again, this is false. According to the course documented, the students started speaking by the 6th lesson and according to the research students generally start to speak after 10 to 12 hours of instructions. The book also gives you tips on how you can create early production activities without all the stress that generally comes with them. And also, TPR can be use with both children and adults.

TPR is now consider to be the fastest way of teaching languages, however, you should really read this book to understand how to apply it.
