Introduction to Veeam Backup & Replication v7 for VMware

This chapter explains the different compononents within a Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure. It also takes a look on some common backup strategies and terms which are being used nowadays.

You will learn about the 3-2-1 rule and how to achieve this with Veeam by using different features such as Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) and Veeam’s native tape support. Besides this there is also a clear view on achieving RPO’s and RTO’s and why it is important when you are working with backups.

As a wrap up of the introduction there is also a quick look at the editions within Veeam such as the differences between the free version and the paid version.

The chapter then goes on explaining how to install Veeam Backup & Replication and how to patch Veeam, configure a repository and adding your vCenter to the Veeam console.
Configuring Backups

Chapter 2 goes on with probably the most important thing, configuring the backup jobs. To get a better knowledge on how Veeam works there is a quick explanation on how Veeam makes and stores the backups.

The chapter is split into 3 parts.
First you will be adding a proxy server and learn how to configure a backup job using some of the basic settings.
Second you will put this Backup to Tape and as a final job you will learn how to copy the backup to a remote location using WAN acceleration.
Restoring Data

Making backups is one thing but understanding how to restore them is also important. Christian explains here how you can quickly recover a full VM using instant VM recovery or a slower recovery using full VM restore. Since Veeam is also able to do file level recovery there is also a quick summary on how to do guest file restores.
Replicating Virtual Machines

As the product name “Veeam Backup & Replication” says it’s a 2-in-1 solution and chapter 4 is all about replication to achieve a DR scenario. The chapter explains you how the infrastructure looks and how to configure your jobs to get a DR site up and running in just a few clicks.
Other Features

Veeam Backup & Replication does more then just making backups and/or replicas of your virtual machines. The final chapter has a look on some of the extra features.

There is a quick look on SureBackup and SureReplica which helps you automatically test any server and application on wether you can use the backup or replica in case of data loss or a failure on a production site.

U-AIR (Universal Application-Item Recovery) is briefly explained as well on how you can use the wizard to restore anything from any type of application.

Quick migration is the built-in tool which allows you to vMotion VM’s which you are running using Instant VM Recovery WITHOUT the need of a vMotion license.

SAN support is a quick look in how Veeam work directly with HP storage to reduce the impact on your production virtual machines where a snapshot may cause issues.

vCloud Director explains how Veeams handles a vCloud Director infrastructure.

Veeam also comes with a webinterface called the “Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager” which is mentioned as well which offers you the ability to do searching in backup files as well as 1-click restore.

And the last version 7 feature being discussed is the new vSphere Web Client which is available for vSphere 5.1 or higher.
My view on the book

This book is a really great way for people to get started with Veeam Backup & Replication v7. Christian did a great job explaining all the things you actually need without going into complex configurations.

For everybody who is new to Veeam as either an end-user or a consultant make sure to check this book! Even if you are an expert in Veeam this book can be very useful as a “quick reference” for those easy deployments.
A good introduction to Veeam BR 28 mai 2014

I was recently sent a copy of Christian Mohn's new book "Learning Veeam Backup and Replication for VMware vSphere" to review, and as ever this is my honest opinion of this book. I am not receiving anything other than the copy of the book for this review. I don't work for a vendor, so I have no axe to grind!

Content
The book starts of with explanations of basic backup strategies and explains principals like Grandfather-Father-Son media rotation and RPO/RTOs. From there it dives into the architecture of Veeam BR and its components. The remainder of chapter 1 covers a walk through of the installation of the product.

Chapter 2 covers the configuration of backups, and gives some background into the different types of backups within Veeam, their drawbacks, and how Veeam have addressed them. For example solving the problem of having to combine incremental backups with the last full, which Veeam solve with synthetic full backups. The chapter also covers backup proxies, and configuring backup jobs, copying to tape or remote repository, and the WAN accelerator.

The next chapter walks through performing restores with Veeam, including full VMs, VM files (like a vmx) and VMDKs, and guest OS files.

Chapter 4 covers the replication part of Veeam Backup and Replication, and after explaining the differences between backup and replication it covers the infrastructure required before stepping through the set-up of a replication job. It also covers the process for fail over and fail-back, and here is one example of where I'd like to see some comparison - e.g. with VMware's SRM, which has a similar feature set.

The fifth and final chapter covers some of the more unique features of Veeam's offering, and I thought it provided a good explanation of those features - here is where I think walk through of setup/config would be most valuable, but it reads more as a feature list than a learning guide.

Summary
I found the writing style easy to read and I thought it flowed quite well throughout the book - this is always impressive when the author's first language isn't English.

I did find that I had to keep reminding myself that the book is specifically written about a single product rather than a more agnostic approach - I felt it read more like a vendor produced document. Personally, I would have liked some comparison with other well-known backup products to ground it a little and perhaps some more real-world explanations to distinguish it from vendor install documentation.

Perhaps that's a little unfair as the book is specifically about that one product, and there is added value in the explanations provided. The introduction specifically states that it's aimed at "vSphere administrators looking for an introduction to Veeam Backup & Replication v7 for VMware" and it definitely does provide that.
Good introduction to Veeam 25 mai 2014
Par Sean P. Massey - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Learning Veeam Backup and Replication for VMware vSphere is a great introduction to Veeam. It serves as a good primer to the administrator who has not used Veeam before, and the book is laid out in a way to provide the basic technical details of using the software without getting too bogged down in technical deep dive or architecture discussions.

The book clocks in a little thin at 95 pages, and it has five chapters and no appendices. These five chapters are:
Chapter 1 - Introduction to Veeam
This chapter covers the basics of the Veeam software, including the components, licensing levels, and basic installation.

Chapter 2 - Configuring Backup
This chapter goes over Veeam's 3-2-1 backup philosphy and shows how to create backup jobs that meet this best practice.

Chapter 3 - Restoring Data
This chapter goes over how to use the various data recovery options in Veeam.

Chapter 4 - Replicating Virtual Machines
This chapter goes over configuring virtual machine replication. It also discusses options for handling failover in the event of a disaster scenario and how to fail back after the situation is resolved.

Chapter 5 - Other Features
This chapter covers the other features that are included with Veeam.

Chapters two and three basically walk through the backup and recovery lifecycle by showing how to configure a backup job and then how to restore data using the different types of backup restoration options.

The book has two main weaknesses. The book goes over many of the features of the Veeam product suite, but it doesn't always talk about the license level that is required for the feature. The book does discuss licensing in the first chapter, but it only talks about the features of the free edition before providing a link to the licensed feature page on the Veeam webpage.

The other major weakness is that is does not cover some of the newer features of Veeam such as the Veeam Explorer for Exchange/SharePoint. These applications, which are included with the newer version, support single-item recovery without having to do the complicated setup of the UAIR components that are discussed in the book.

IT professionals who are familiar with Veeam may not get much out of this book, but the admin who is just learning Veeam or planning to evaluate it will benefit greatly from it.
Veeam 7 for VMware vSphere 23 mai 2014

I know Veeam's product insight out as I'm an early adopter, but by reading through Christian's book I found out some areas which I discovered even further.

This article is no mean to be in-depth detailed review, but rather a look for what an average enterprise admin who is managing business critical production systems running under VMware vSphere can accomplish with Veeam Backup & Replication.

The book is an in-depth guide which allows not only to get all the benefits from Veeam's solution, but also to configure the backups the way to fit your needs (respecting 3-2-1 rules) and also benefit disk space savings options. The 3-2-1 means 3 copy of backup on 2 different media types with 1 copy off site.

Veeam's product evolves fast. Every year there is a new version packing more and more features. Latest v 7.0 brought more than 75 new features or enhancements. To keep up if you're not day-to-day user it's difficult. New administrators starting with Veeam should definitely check it out.

If you're admin using or planning to use Veeam's product then the book is for you as you'll get the info you need not only to successfully configure the solution, but also some tips which help you with day-to-day management.
Great introduction to Veeam Backup & Replication 22 mai 2014
Par Craig - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The target audience for the book is for vSphere administrators looking for an introduction to Veeam Backup & Replication v7. It's not intended to be a technical deep dive.

When reading a technical book the logical flow from chapter to chapter is one of the key areas that I look for.

The author starts with an introduction to Veeam including the architecture and components that make up the backup application. This leads onto configuring backups, restoring data, replicating virtual machines and finally other features.

This logical flow makes the book enjoyable to read, and includes a couple of puns which placed a smile on my face!

Throughout the book, the author gives common sense advice to his target audience, which includes:

3-2-1 backup rule
RPO/RTO definitions
Backup Repository placement
Considerations for installation/service accounts
When to use incremental or reversed incremental backup types
What happens when you restore a VM Guest file
Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager use cases

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an introduction to Veeam Backup & Replication.
