Présentation de l'éditeur

"King Leopold's Soliloquy" is a 1905 pamphlet by Mark Twain. Its subject is King Leopold's rule over the Congo Free State. A work of political satire harshly condemnatory of his actions, it ostensibly recounts Leopold speaking in his own defense.
King Leopold raves madly about the good things that he says he has done for the people of the Congo Free State, including the disbursement of millions on religion and art. He says he had come to Congo with piety "oozing" from "every pore," that he had only wanted to convert the people to Christianity, that he had wanted to stop the slave trade.
Leopold says that he did not take any of the government money, that he did not use the revenues as his personal "swag", and that such claims by the "meddlesome American missionaries", "frank British consuls", and "blabbing Belgian-born traitors" are wholly false. He asserts that for a King to be criticized as he has been is blasphemy — surely, under the rule of God, any King who was not doing God's will would not have been helped by God.
The book mentions the critical report by the missionary William Henry Sheppard on an 1899 massacre of over eighty people by Zappo Zaps sent to collect taxes. Leopold claims that his critics only speak of what is unfavorable to him, such as the unfair taxes that he levied upon the people of the Congo, which caused starvation and the extermination of entire villages, but not of the fact that he had sent missionaries to the villages to convert them to Christianity. Nothing, Leopold complains, can satisfy the English.
Although in the next decades published almost all over the world, in German-speaking Central Europe it was published not before the 1960s and only in East Germany. US-allied Western Germany, Austria and Switzerland never did. The First East German edition was a translation by Stefan Heym in 1961. In 1967 and 1979 two editions followed, translated by Ana Maria Brock and commented by Karl-Heinz Schönfelder.
[Throws down pamphlets which he has been reading. Excitedly combs his flowing spread of whiskers with his fingers; pounds the table with his fists; lets off brisk volleys of unsanctified Ian-guage at brief intervals, repentantly drooping his head, between volleys, and kissing the Louis XI crucifix hanging from his neck, accompany-ing the kisses with mumbled apologies; presently rises, flushed and perspiring, and walks the floor, gesticulating'l

the throat! [Hastily kisses the crucifix, and mumbles] In these twenty years I have spent millions to keep the press of the two hemispheres quiet, and still these leaks keep on occurring. I have spent other millions on religion and art, and what do I get for it? Nothing. Not a compliment. These generosities are studiedly ignored, in print. In print I get nothing but slanders—and slanders again—and still slanders, and slanders on top of slanders 1 Grant them true, what of it? They are slanders all the same, when uttered against a king.

Miscreants—they are telling everything/ Oh, everything: how I went pilgriming among.....

This item will not load on my Kindle.
The first time, a text box popped-up telling me there was an error and that I should remove it from my device and reload it from my archive. So I did.
The next time I opened it, the processing time took a very long time - one section of the screen changed at a time. Once it was "loaded" the page was blank except the progress at the bottom. Lots of books start on a blank page... could not turn the page. Went to another book (which loaded at normal speed) and the pages turned just fine - not a device issue. Went back and had the same slow load, blank page, and no page turn.
Will be trying to return and have already purchased the cheaper Kindle edition. *same problem with cheaper edition! Expensive one is a scan that loads fine, but expensive for a limited function scan*

This version is just pictures of the pages of an old copy of the book. You have to zoom in on the page to read the text, then reduce it to normal size to move to the next page. Avoid this version!!!

This is not a kindle book. It is just like a scan of a normal book. Ugh. Such a disgusting thing to do!
