HASH(0x96f6ce40) étoiles sur 5 perhaps the most wonderful of all French operettas 17 septembre 2009
Par Mark C. Zacek - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Les Saltimbanques is virtually unknown in the U.S. (although even here there is one tune that everyone will recognize). What a pity! The operetta is aflood with melody, truly charming, distinguished melody. This performance is everything one could ask for, apart from a slightly brash performance of the overture. I think it is the most entrancing of all French operettas, not excluding Offenbach. (#2 is Messager's Veronique.) For someone as little known as Louis Ganne to have created such a masterwork is a bit of a surprise. But then he also created "Hans, le Joueur", which is even less known than Saltimbanques but is nearly as wonderful. I guess the problem is the neglect of non-Offenbach French operetta in general. There are buried treasures by Lecocq, Hahn, Planchette, and of course Messager and Ganne. EMI has splendid recordings, both stereo and mono, of many of these. Let's hope for some speedy reissues. This repertoire should not be relegated to the connoisseurs. Any lover of Gilbert and Sullivan or Lehar would love these as well. I can't comprehend their neglect.

HASH(0x96f8abb8) étoiles sur 5 So very charming... 17 février 2005
Par Brett Farrell - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This is so very charming an opperetta. To hear it is to want to have more! (Though he only wrote one other opperetta that was recorded or at least was commercially available and it's not so easy to find 'Hans, le joueur de flûte' (Hans the Flute Player) ) The music is very spritely and addicting, especially the waltz!, but so are many other pieces than just the waltz. All the circus like pieces and the very Pucciniesque romance that occurs before the first carnival scene. It's all so very charming. I was surprised that it's not for sale any more...
