Description de l'ouvrage

20 mai 2014
Simple sewing techniques make craft time fun for kids and grown-ups alike, with ideas for vintage-inspired clothes, accessories, quirky home décor, cute toys, and sweet gifts designed by the mom behind the popular parenting and craft blog Cakies.

Don't just sew for your kids. Sew with them! Rubyellen Bratcher has invented 30 simple projects that encourage families to spend more time together through DIY activities. This mom of four learned how to sew at her local fabric shop, but soon found that her daughters were her greatest source of inspiration. Documenting her family's daily life and DIY adventures online, Rubyellen's blog, Cakies, has steadily grown into a destination for parents and crafters of all ages. In her first book, she offers 30 projects for kids and grown-ups to make together, including a handpainted skirt, scribbled placemats, a robot friend, easy felt party garlands, overstuffed dollhouse pillows, a gorgeous world-map quilt, and much more. Each chapter also includes no-sew projects, educational activities, play ideas, and reading suggestions to encourage imagination and learning.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Simple Sewing projects 24 mai 2014

Format:Format Kindle
Let's Sew Together, by Rubyellen Bratcher is a fun book full of little projects to work on as a family. To be completely honest, I probably would not have gone out and bought this book, but I think it will be really fun to sit down with my daughter, who is showing interest in sewing at 6 years old, and pick out some projects to do together. I like that the book is a combo of machine sewing, hand sewing, and no sewing crafts. They are some great toys, like puppets, a girl doll and a robot doll, play place settings, fruit and veggie softies, etc. There are clothes, little slippers, pencil pouches, and a beautiful map quilt. I love that she really encourages kids to personalize and decorate, using fabric markers on the projects and then embroidering or free hand quilting. There are templates included for projects where they are needed. They all fit on the page and inlcude percentages for sizing up appropriately. This is really my only criticism of the book, I'm not sure that my home printer/copier can do enlargements, so I'd probably have to take it to a copy shop or somewhere with a copier. I wish there were some way to give a unique code inside each book to download the files online or something. There is a simple, thorough introduction that makes this book accessible to beginning sewists. I'd recommend it for beginners as well as for sewists of any level with kids who want ideas for projects to work on together. You can read more info from the publisher here.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Really adorable book 17 juin 2014
Par OceanDreamer - Publié sur Amazon.com
It's summer. Kids have hours on end to occupy. And moms may need a little inspiration to keep them entertained. Look no further. Just choose what you feel in the mood for. Do you want to make cozy and completely personalized slippers? How about a one of a kind 'around the world' map? Want to play house? You can spend the day making doll house pillows or a plaid a-frame tent. Feeling hungry? Why not make an entire spread of fabric foods, and the dishes to accompany it!? And if that's not enough, there are necklaces, hide-a-pockets, bows, garlands, and so much more. So step inside and let your imagination soar!

I think this book is reallllly cute! The projects are absolutely adorable. And there are projects for boys and girls alike . I think it's great how simple the ideas are, in that an experienced seamstress could turn these into amazing, and the beginner could feel undaunted enough to give them a try. I think the adult assisting will enjoy this as much as the child! I can't wait to get started on some of these ideas.
I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Must-Own Sewing Book! 26 mai 2014
Par Melody Mak - Publié sur Amazon.com
After what felt like months of waiting, I finally got this book in the mail last night! I am one of those people who have a sewing machine at home, but always feel intimidated to use it. But, Rubyellen's voice and style of writing is so down to earth, encouraging and explains her projects in a way that make you feel excited to get out there and try it! The book is also filled with beautiful photography, hand drawn illustrations, step by step photos and helpful tips along the way. I haven't decided which project I want to try first, but I'm really excited to try the "tickled pink picnic blanket", "travel the world quilt" or "jolly mr. robot". If you are at all on the fence about this book, I can't recommend it enough!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fun family projects! 21 mai 2014
Par CuteEverything - Publié sur Amazon.com
I like how so many of the sewing projects are free form and let you use a lot of your own creativity. My kids like to come up with ideas as they are sewing and incorporate them and I really encourage that. A couple of our favorite crafts in the book are the homemade fabric banners and bunting, which work great for a party and also for decorating a child’s room after the party. My daughter loved the giant patchwork dollhouse pillow which she plays with on her bed with her small rag dolls when she’s winding down. I would recommend Let’s Sew Together for fun family activities that also offer the chance to teach basic sewing skills.

I have a tween daughter that is interested in 'fashion design' and learning how to sew. I bought a sewing machine a couple of years ago but its never been taken out of the box. I have checked out a couple of library books on sewing but they were way more advanced than my beginner self. I was really excited to read this "Let's Sew Together" book because its filled with simple projects the whole family can make.

Rubyellen lists everything you would need to feel comfortable trying a project for the first time including; skill levels, patterns, basic sewing supplies, how to hand sew, and sewing vocabulary. There are a combo of machine sewing, hand sewing, and no sewing crafts. Being an adult, who isn't particularly crafty and maybe a little uptight on neatness, its hard to not try to make projects 'perfect' the first time (which can discourage attempts before even beginning) and to let kids be creative in their own way. The author stresses collaborative crafting, despite the age or ability. Drawing on fabric, who does that?! Kids do! Its a real eye opener- this can be FUN for everyone while learning and gaining a skill that can be useful forever or just a hobby.

I love the side notes included with instructions for projects like teaching moments, read it together, hand drawn pictures and other notes to make the projects fun and personalized. The pictures can be hard to follow with instructions for a beginner just reading through. The completed project fabrics don't always match the step-by-step instructions, I think it would be easier if I understood better what I was looking at. After reading the book I do feel like there is hope for someone like me to begin sewing with my children.

There are templates included for projects where they are needed in the back of the book that are supposed to be enlarged a certain percentage. I'm not really sure how to do that! There isn't any instructions for enlarging either. I think it may be easier if the book came with a disc. The disc could include short YouTube style videos of some of the projects and the templates in digital file. If a disc is really not doable then if there were some way to give a unique code inside each book to download the files online.
