Présentation de l'éditeur

In the winter of 2013, reeling from a devastating breakup and shouldering her way through the recession with the rest of the world, Rochelle Short learned about the home-sharing site The startup, valued at over $2.5 billion, is a place where hosts offer lodging to strangers—everything from castles to Airstream trailers—for a fee.

Hosting on Airbnb gave Rochelle a financial lifeline while her new freelance career got off the ground and was the perfect distraction from her romantic woes. Instead of pulling the covers over her head and disappearing, she forged a new life for herself—happily fluffing pillows and sharing stories with people from all corners of the world. As the economy and her finances recovered, so did her heart.

The book chronicles Rochelle’s first year as a host, from April of 2013 to April of 2014. With wit and wisdom, Rochelle shares her fears, her successes, and most importantly—a glimpse into the lives of her guests. Rochelle’s practical advice covers everything you need to know about setting yourself up as a host, with seasoned insight into the mechanics and joys of hosting—tips like what sheets to buy, how to screen potential guests, and how to stash your booze away from thirsty strangers.

A must-read for anyone curious about what it takes to navigate the home-sharing economy, "Letting People In" is a wonderfully honest story about life, love, friendship…and a lot of laundry.

Rochelle does such an amazing job of weaving together her first-hand experiences with Airbnb guests while giving helpful tidbits and pointers on what being an Airbnb host actually entails. I can speak from experience that Rochelle was an amazing host when my friend and I came to Seattle to visit for the first time. She truly raises the bar high when it comes to her generosity and compassion as a host. If you are considering opening your doors to perfect strangers, then you must absolutely look to this book as a helpful guide with invaluable insight. If you're someone who enjoys grabbing a cup of joe and heading to the park to people watch, then this book is for you! In fact, if you're even remotely fascinated by human interaction and how we directly impact each other's lives in one way or another, then this book is for you too! I'm so glad Rochelle took the time to document her adventures as an Airbnb host! Her writing is excellent and it's nothing short of pure entertainment.

Letting People in: Tips & Stories from a BNB Host is an absolutely wonderful read! To say Rochelle is an "amazing" writer and editor falls shy of the mark, as it is hard to find a word to express her talent. Her writing flows seamlessly and with such color that your eyes sail over the pages like a leaf floating down a river, not leaving out a single detail of the passing landscape. Rochelle's book is not only about her experience hosting guests in her home, but equally about navigating her own personal life as a mid-thirties, single, "recovering people-pleaser." Rochelle shares how she faces her fears, career decisions, and relationships by reminding us that laboring through these brings growth and renewed opportunities of life. Living in the same, impersonal city as this author, I appreciate how she has countered Seattle's social "dis-ease" by endeavoring into new territory and embracing people. Whether you are familiar with Airb&b or not, her stories are eloquently written, the honesty and vulnerability of her writing is rare and refreshing, and, you will put this book down with a smile on your face. You will be inspired to open your mind and heart to things you hadn't thought of before and motivated to take once uncertain steps toward new pursuits. "Trust yourself and what you have to offer, then watch as the world rise up to meet you."

We have experienced Airbnb as guests on nearly a dozen occasions. Because of our experiences, we decided we wanted to become hosts, as well. I didn't start out with a lot of confidence, and had a million questions. I still have many questions, but I got many answers from Letting People In.

Rochelle's book was a breath of fresh air. The candor is SO refreshing, and with each story she shares in the book, it reveals one more piece of the picture of what it's like to be a host. One of the things I liked about her story is that she says what has worked for her, and does not come across with a one-size-fits-all approach.

Not only has the experience been life-changing for Rochelle, and she opened her heart and home to her guests, but if you follow her example, it will change you, too.

She has written elsewhere that she's not sure if she should continue writing on this theme, or not. The money will burn a hole in my pocket to buy her next books. I certainly recommend this book.

A while back I moved into a Seattle townhouse and met a charming, thoughtful and fun young woman. As I got to know her, she told me about Airbnb, which I had never heard of before. She shared some stories about her dealings with Airbnb guests and a book she had written, Letting People In, which detailed her experiences and adventures as an Airbnb hostess. I found her book to not only be a mirror image of her open and giving personality but a most intriguing and interesting insight into some of her guests and her friends. Her smooth, warm and sincere style of writing makes for pleasant and easy reading but leaves the reader wanting more.

Whether or not you already patronize Airbnb, you can't walk away from Letting People In without feeling you've met, in the author, someone you'd like to get to know better through another book. Here's to a sequel!
