No Hitting! and Excuse Me! give straightforward Dos and Don'ts that speak to a toddler's comprehension abilities. I highly recommend these to open discussions with toddlers about the lessons of dealing properly with anger and learning manners. I like to use No Hitting! at the end of a timeout where one of those "no-nos" has been committed.

However, I Can Share seems to have caused more problems with my almost-3-yr-old daughter. It is too subtle in its lessons, with each situation presented requiring additional parental explanation. This, of course, doesn't hold a toddler's interest, and till Mom's done explaining how the children went from "mine!" to "sharing" (which they never actually do, instead offering playmates less desirable alternatives), the child has already moved on to the next page. This book has done nothing but give my child the proper terminology to express "Mine! You can't have it!" as this is the only phrase that gets constant repitition in the book. As we all know, repetition is key to getting through to a toddler. Perhaps it's more effective with an older toddler or young child who can better grasp the abstract notion of sharing as it's presented here. For now, I've hidden this book from my daughter and am waiting for its effects to fade.

My daughter enjoys many other Karen Katz books, but I decided to return this gift set and purchase the other two titles separately because I don't like the lessons "I Can Share" teaches. It's really not so much about sharing as about how to amiably get around sharing. Each page presents a scenario when the child doesn't want to share, but unfortunately, the solution is not about compromise but about offering an alternative. It hasn't occurred to my daughter to not want to share in some of the scenarios presented, so I'm also concerned that the strong repetition of the not sharing theme would actually give her new ideas. "Excuse Me" is charming. My favorite title of the set.

We purchased these books as a birthday present for my 2 yo. I also purchased No Biting and A Potty for Me by Karen Katz. The books are fun to read. My only complaint, similiar to all books of this sort, is that the flap that opens up gets ripped off by excited/frusterated toddlers. I already have several that I've taped and retaped!!

I fully reviewed "I Can Share" (which I thought was terrible), so I won't repeat that review here. (Search for that book and read the reviews there before purchasing; it receives very low scores from parents.) "Excuse Me!", however,is a wonderful book, and after reading it a couple of times, my daughter (who received it at 18 months and is now almost 2), immediately began putting it to use. She says "Excuse Me!" at the appropriate times, covers her mouth appropriately, etc., which is rather unexpected by most people at her age, so we get a lot of compliments on her manners. :) As for "No Hitting!", we don't read it much to her, because she doesn't hit other kids, and we don't feel the need to give her any ideas. But, it is there if we need it. If I was buying these now (they were a gift), I would skip the sharing book altogether, buy the manners book, and wait and see if I needed the hitting book before purchasing it.

Set has large full page flaps unlike other Katz books we have. Wording is basic. My son likes the Excuse Me book the best.
