3.0 étoiles sur 5 Basic overview, not terribly comprehensive. 22 juillet 2014

Lonely planet book itself: The book was ok for a general overview of each area, but I found that the listings were not very comprehensive and the descriptions not particularly helpful.
* Xela has at least 40-50 language schools, but the guide lists only five, and doesn't at least acknowledge that it is not at all a comprehensive list. I found my school by word of mouth. It makes no mention of Adrenalina Tours, a Guatemalan-owned national operation that actually has a fairly strong set of offerings, and has English-speaking staff.
* Antigua section did not at all include a number of restaurants that I passed, and did not describe a number of the buildings, nor did it include the hotel (Hotel del Carmen) where I stayed - and this was a fairly sizeable, mid-range hotel.
* The Panajachel map does not include many of the narrow side streets that cannot accomodate cars but do accomodate pedestrians and scooters.

I had the kindle version, which was also problematic: the index was not very good, and there was no direct way to get to the table of contents. I would suggest, too, that it might be better to walk around with a paper book - it's not very practical to walk around with an expensive e-reader or iPad.

I just traveled in Guatemala for 3 weeks. Although I found prices to be about 50% higher than what the guide says, it was full of useful information

There are some really good hints and tips throughout the book. you learn a lot of about the regions and what to expect.

some important advice i can offer is to pay attention to the year of publication, and then take into account the time elapsed. some of the places recommended either dont exist anymore or the prices are completely wrong. most times the prices are significantly higher than what is stated in the books. (this is relating to all the lonely planets or travel guides). it is easy to under budget if following the prices in the book. im not sure which is the cause and affect, but once places are noted in travel books like this i think their use goes up significantly, or the region is experiencing a tourist boom, so the prices of all things throughout the town rise with the inflation tourist money brings. im not sure if the boom is because of it being noted in the book or the book finds the place because of the boom. either way, the prices on the places i tried to visit would significantly higher in real life than what was quoted in the book. significant meaning in relation, proportional, not in terms of actual dollars in all cases.

otherwise the books are a great resource for traveling. you can get a great notion for how big or remote a region, or how accessible or commercial it is.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great basic travel book 16 janvier 2015

As a frequent Guatemala traveler I have found this book extremely helpful for its information on culture, history, courtesies, and travel but less than comprehensive in its selection of towns, attractions, and language schools. The information on bus routes (the main, often only, and frequently confusing, method of travel) is exhaustive and in my experience accurate and useful. I still like using travelers' checks (yes, I know, but they are really safe and there's no exchange commission in Guatemala) and was pleased that LP actually recommended their use here. Guatemala is small but full of history, archeology, and culture, so I can't really fault the editors for leaving out some of my favorite places and particularly many of the smaller language schools. The book is in many ways what a travel book should be- it tells you what you need to know (with an obvious affection for the country) but also leaves space for the traveler to find his or her own way off the well-worn trail. The section on history, food, and culture is fantastic. I am still partial, however, to the format of the previous edition.
