The heroine, Joy, returns to her hometown in Kentucky after eighteen years away to care for her aging parents. Finding herself once again in her hometown brings back painful memories of the death of her childhood friend, Jenny, not helped by discovering that Jenny's former boyfriend who survived the car accident that killed Jenny is now her parents family doctor.
This story is part love story, part mystery, part family drama with some (believable) paranormal activity thrown in. It has a straightforward plot apart from the paranormal activity but calling it chick lit or a romance novel would not be doing it justice as it is very well written. Joy is racked with guilt from the death of her friend but doesn't know why as she was not involved in the accident. The author manages to convey this very well and we can understand Joy's conflict between wanting to find happiness and not being able to let go of her guilt. I guessed the reason for Joy's guilt halfway through the story but this did not in any way impact on my enjoyment of the book and I was sorry when I had finished it.
I got this book for free but I would have paid for it. It is definitely in the easy reading category but is intelligently written and I can recommend it even to readers, who like myself, are not usually fans of this genre. Five stars.
