Michael Connolly has written seven books featuring the hard-boiled Vietnam vet-turned-LAPD detective Harry Bosch and Lost Light sees him ride again. The astringent and vivid realisation of the city of Los Angeles (quite as sharply done as in the great novels of Raymond Chandler) and the layers of complexity created for Bosch made him one of the most interesting and well-realised characters in modern crime fiction. Even the overused device of alcohol abuse in the detective was treated with freshness and imagination. Such non-Bosch titles as Chasing the Dime have their virtues, but most admirers will frankly be relieved that Harry is back in action.

When Harry Bosch left the LAPD, he took with him a murder file about a film production assistant killed four years before during a large-scale robbery on a movie set. The LAPD has decided that the stolen money was utilised to create a terrorist training camp, and there are moves to release the killer to enable the FBI to track down the terrorists. Needless to say, this does not go down well with the volatile Harry, and he soon finds himself up against his erstwhile colleagues at the LAPD and the implacable forces of the FBI.

In the earlier Bosch novels, it's clear that the flintily wrought characterisation and gritty scene-setting concealed some less-than-original plots, but here we've got a triumphant marriage of innovative, hard-edge narrative and a parade of characters quite as vivid as any in the genre. Even though this marks the ninth outing for Harry, the principled, incorruptible investigator shows little sign of slowing in his unrelenting pursuit of justice for all. Disillusioned by his constant battle with police hypocrisy and bureaucracy, Harry quits the department after 28 years on the job. Like so many ex-cops before him, he finds retirement boring: "I was staying up late, staring at the walls and drinking too much red wine." He decides to take advantage of his newly minted private-eye license and get back to work. The case he chooses-one that he had been briefly involved in four years before-is the puzzling unsolved murder of 24-year-old Angella Benton. Angella's death is linked to the theft of $2 million from a film company foolishly employing real cash as a prop on an action-movie set. Harry patiently follows the bloody trail from Angella's violated body through the Hollywood heist to the disappearance of an FBI computer expert and the shooting of two LAPD cops. His investigation eventually leads him to the elite terrorist hunters of the new Department of Homeland Security. Few will follow every twist and turn of the labyrinthine plot, but no matter. The fun comes in watching Harry slowly and brilliantly separate the seemingly impossibly knotted strands and then knit them back into whole cloth. This exciting procedural is as good as any in the series, and Connelly's concluding coda has a kicker about Harry's private life that will draw gasps of astonishment from longtime readers.

Ce commentaire fait référence à cette édition : Lost Light (Relié)
Harry Bosch est maintenant retraité de la police. Evidemment on ne tire pas un trait sur une vie au LAPD comme ça, et Harry travaille sur une affaire non résolue.
Le début du livre est excellent : compact, peu de digressions, les scènes s'enchainent comme dans un film.
Puis ça s'alourdit un peu : la guerre LAPD/FBI, l'ancienne femme d'Harry, le sens de la vie d'après Harry, sa Mission... Mais tout ça reste acceptable et dans le fil de l'intrigue.
Il y a bien sûr un rebondissement final, qui ne surprend même plus tant il devient un classique dans le genre... Reste un roman au rythme enlevé, un personnage attachant (pas toujours sympathique, c'est mieux !), une écriture agréable. Tout cela se lit bien, avec plaisir. Du bon Connely, même s'il a fait mieux.
