Présentation de l'éditeur

Old Loves Die Hard…and in the worst places.

In Old Loves Die Hard, Lauren Carr continues the rags-to-riches story of Mac Faraday, an underpaid homicide detective who inherits two-hundred-and-seventy million dollars and an estate on Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, from his birth mother on the day his divorce becomes final.

Mac is settling nicely into his new life at Spencer Manor when his ex-wife Christine shows up—and she wants him back! Before Mac can send her packing, Christine and her estranged lover are murdered in Mac’s private penthouse suite at the Spencer Inn, the five-star resort built by his ancestors.

The investigation leads to the discovery of cases files for some of Mac’s murder cases in the room of the man responsible for destroying his marriage. Why would his ex-wife’s lover come to Spencer to dig into Mac’s old cases?

With the help of his new friends on Deep Creek Lake, Mac must use all of his detective skills to clear his name and the Spencer Inn’s reputation, before its five-stars—and more bodies—start dropping!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 WHEN THE PAST MAKES AN UNEXPECTED APPEARANCE.... 29 avril 2011
Par Laurel-Rain Snow - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
In this sequel to It's Murder, My Son (A Mac Faraday Mystery), we meet ex-homicide detective Mac Faraday again as he is settling into his new life, after inheriting millions from his birth mother, Robin Spencer, a famous mystery writer. He had only discovered who his mother was in adulthood, and is still reeling from the changes wrought by his new-found wealth.

So when his ex-wife Christine shows up (inebriated) at his new home, Spencer Manor, he is totally unprepared for her desperate plea for him to take her back. Apparently the lover she left Mac for has dumped her cruelly, and now she realizes what she had...and lost.

Mac takes her over to the penthouse suite at The Spencer Inn, where he hopes she'll sober up. He plans to meet her the next day for breakfast to talk.

But suddenly Mac's life spirals out of control when, the next day, he discovers Christine and her estranged lover, Stephen Maguire, murdered in the suite.

Over the next scintillating pages, we discover several possible suspects, many of whom had some kind of political connections to one another, and the thrill ride begins. The fun in this kind of story is trying to figure out who did what to whom, and how they did it; and just when you think you have it sorted out, there is another possible scenario playing out. Mac and his half-brother David, the police chief, work together to solve the case, discovering all kinds of secrets as dead bodies show up right and left.

We learn a lot more about the deceased victims, too, as Old Loves Die Hard (The Mac Faraday Mysteries) winds down to its thrilling conclusion. Along the way, we get to enjoy the interactions between Mac and his new love, Archie, and the antics of Gnarly the dog, who is a bit of a kleptomaniac.

I thoroughly enjoyed this continuing romp with Mac Faraday and those who share his life. I can't wait to see what author Lauren Carr will bring us next! Five stars.

(I read the ARC of this novel).

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Too many characters causes focus on the two primary murders to be lost 22 juillet 2011
Par Charles Ashbacher - Publié sur Amazon.com
Mac Faraday is a retired detective now living the good life. While he was superb at his job, Mac never earned higher than a basic civil service wage. However, when he retired and on the day his divorce was final Mac learned that he was the son of a very successful female writer and received a nine-figure inheritance. Although that was some time ago, Mac is still in the process of transitioning from a working stiff into a multi-millionaire gentleman of leisure.
Mac's ex-wife Christine left him for a dashing man (Stephen McGuire) that appeared to have money before Mac was the one with the cash. She has started drinking and has learned that the man of her dreams is a sequence of nightmares. Therefore, Christine comes to Mac literally begging him to take her back. Not one to be easily swayed, Mac takes her to a hotel/resort that he owns to spend the night and sleep it off.
Coincidentally, Stephen McGuire is also staying at the hotel and there is a confrontation where Christine threatens to kill Stephen. Mac manages to get Christine up to a room and somewhat calmed down, offering to meet her for breakfast to discuss the children.
When Christine doesn't show the next morning Mac uses his passkey to enter Christine's room and finds both McGuire and Christine dead by violence. For a short time, Mac is no longer the detective careful around a crime scene but a man upset seeing the mother of his children dead. Finally coming out of his reverie, Mac contacts the police and must make a statement.
This is but the beginning of a convoluted and occasionally absurd story. In that area of the country, the McGuire's are the aristocracy, capable of bending society to their whims and getting "their people" assigned to prestigious public positions. Additional deaths pile up rather quickly and there are multiple attempts on Mac's life. There are dirty judges, lawyers, prosecutors and cops, too many to maintain a coherent and logical thread. The fundamental murder mystery becomes much more than that, it reached the point where I started to lose track of which character did which specific dirty trick.
That is unfortunate because the writing itself was quite good, this would have been an exciting page-turner if the plot did not have had so many shady characters. There are just too many to maintain a tight enough wrap around the story. I am sure many other readers were like me and wanted Mac to become more involved with Archie, the female editor of his mother's works. One great and memorable character is Gnarly the dog.

Mac Faraday, Archie Monday, and Gnarly are again working their magic to solve a murder in Spencer.

Spencer, Maryland, was hit again with a double murder inside the penthouse at Mac's Inn. This sequel brought in new characters that included high profile attorneys and judges who may be murderers. The twists and turns involved in the solving of the murder is quite creative. Lauren Carr is a great mystery writer. This book gives you more background about the characters that you loved in her first book and gives you a lot of information about investigations and how the judicial system works.....great research done by the author.

The murderer in this tale is pretty clever and knows a lot about the connections the people she is killing have with each other. The way the story weaves definitely keeps you guessing....is it the judge and his attorney girlfriend....is it the Spanish-speaking maid...is it Mac's murdered ex-wife who got herself killed as well or someone totally out of the blue? When will we find out? They all seem to be guilty. I guess you will have to read OLD LOVES DIE HARD to see. :)

This sequel is first-rate but not as gripping as her first book....it didn't grab me from the first page as much as the first one did, but as it continues it gets intense and good....and ooh la la on the ending....you will love it. It actually is good in a different way from the first book by including more of Mac's previous experiences as a detective and giving insight into the solving of crimes.

For someone who loves twists and turns and suspense up until the last page you won't want to miss this brilliant mystery. I am definitely delighted I found the Mac Faraday mystery series. I love his character and the mysteries. 4/5

Looking forward to Lauren's next book in the series:

Review:Old Loves Die Hard by Lauren Carr
5 STARS Well now this week have read all 3 Mac Faraday novels and have really enjoyed them. They are full of twists and turns you might guess some but you won't guess all its secrets. They are clean as in no sex scenes or any vulgar langage but a lot of murder. This book Old Loves Die Hard is the second Mac Faraday novel. Mac is enjoying a visit with Archie and his half brother David when his ex-wife knocks at his door drunk asking for a second chance. Mac does not want another chance after 20 years of marriage his wife kicked him out of his house. She got the house and he got the credit cards bills he did not charge. Then right after he was told he inheirited millions when mystery writer Robin died. Mac was her son that she gave up for adoption 40 years ago. Mac took his ex-wife up to the 5 star inn he also inhierted to check her into. Mac found out at that time that he actually had his own penthouse suite that only for his & his guests use. Before Mac could take her up his ex-wife Christine took off when she saw the guy who she left Mac for and lived with till her money was gone Stephen and had a yelling fight with. After Mac took Christine up to the suite made arrangement to have breakfast with her in the morning when she was sober. When she was not down to meet Mac for breakfast he went up to get her and found Stephen dead and then he found Christine dead in the tub. Even with Mac working as a homicide detective for 20 years he made many mistakes before he called the murder in. Mac was now a suspect in the death of his ex-wife and her lover. It was a media circus that the murder took place in a 5 star inn in the owner's private suite who just inhierited millions 3 months ago. David the new Police chief is also Mac half brother though they just met months ago. David won't answer Mac's phone calls. Mac finds out some of whats going on from the man who is in charge of security. The more they find out why Stephen was here and staying at Mac's inn the more questions they have. The more they find the more dead bodies show up. Someone even takes shots at both David and Mac. Thier is humor in this mystery and part of it is with Mac's dog that he was left. Very smart dog who was a thief. I am sad that I have read all the Mac Faraday mysteries that are out. I look forward to reading more in the future I hope. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley. 04/26/2011 PUB CreateSpace Acorn Book Services

Lauren Carr has followed up on It's Murder, My Son with Old Loves Die Hard, placing Mac Faraday squarely in the middle of a murder investigation allegedly committed by his ex wife in the penthouse suite of Mac's resort hotel. The day Mac's divorce became final, after his wife had left him for her monied and ambitious lover, was the day that he learnt of his multi million dollar inheritance. Now that her relationship has collapsed it seems his ex-wife wants Mac back and turns up drunk and pleading on the doorstep of his mansion. Mac isn't interested but can't simply turn Christine away so he installs her the resort where coincidentally Stephen is also staying with his newest conquest. When Mac discovers the bodies of first Stephen and then his ex-wife he finds himself in the frame as a murder suspect but figuring out who is really responsible won't be as straightforward as expected.

Old Loves Die Hard is another cleverly plotted and engaging mystery by Carr. Familiar characters including Mac, Archie (will they or won't they?) and David return along with the irrepressibly charming Gnarly who has learnt a few new tricks.
This story provides us with a bit more background about Mac as he deals with his ex-wife's death and her family. Mac is very affected by Christine's death, despite her unreasonable behaviour both during their marriage and after it, yet he had sincerely loved her. Rattled by the circumstances, Mac's reasoning isn't as level headed as it usually is, especially when he is excluded from the investigation and considered a possible suspect.
The case is further complicated for Mac by multiple suspects, secrets, and yet more deaths. There seems to be links to Mac's past as a detective in the city, Christine's sisters aren't telling him everything and someone is taking pot shots at him. There are twists and turns as Mac and the police identify and eliminate suspects, following avenues of inquiry that seem to go nowhere and others the go in circles. The story is crowded with overlapping plot threads but they all unravel nicely.
While I thought Carr showed the strength in storyline, pacing and character development that was evident in the first book of the series, I did feel this story lacked the editorial polish of its predecessor. There are instances of awkward phrasing and structural flaws that are distracting and the dialogue and action scenes aren't quite as tight.

There is danger, intrigue, humour and romance in Old Loves Die Hard, creating an entertaining and engaging mystery. I would recommend you read the first book, It's Murder, My Son, before this, though Old Loves Die Hard is not unworkable as a stand alone it is enriched by the familiarity with the characters. I know Lauren is planning on releasing the third in the series, Color of Murder, this year and I am looking forward to Mac's next case.
