"The perfect summer read" - Michelle, Book Briefs Reviews

"Not only did it keep me in suspense of what was happening, but the character's responses were believable. Gow really impressed me with this book and I am looking forward to reading her other books." - YA Fiction Book Reviews

"I love the romance, but there are bigger issues the author tackles in this book that is appropriate for older teens and young adults and felt realistic." - Constance

"When I think of my summers spent at Aunt Sookie’s Malibu “pad” as she called it, I think about first kisses, first love, and first heartbreak. I think about my friendship with Rachel Donovan and her brothers Nathaniel (Nat) and Drew. I think of all the sunsets, dawns, and first attempts. And then there was this summer, the summer I grew up, in more ways than one, and everyone noticed, especially the boys, especially Nat." – Summer Jones

Summer has always looked forward to spending her summers at her Aunt's beach house with the Donovans. To her, summers at Aunt Sookie's beach house was magical, especially getting to spend time with the Donovans - her best friend Rachel and Rachel's brothers Nathaniel, and Drew. Here at Aunt Sookie's beach house, they can be anyone and anything they dreamed. For Summer, she had always wished to become as pretty as Rachel and for her brothers to think of her as more than Rachel's friend. For Nat and Drew, summers at Aunt Sookie's beach house meant fun and escape, a place where they go to with their mom and sister for the summer, away from city life. They never thought this summer would be different. They never thought things would change as much as they did...and it all began with them falling for and loving Summer.

A new adult contemporary romance with an edge.

En savoir plus sur l'auteur

Although an American author, many of Kailin Gow's books take place in France, such as Devour Me (Master Chefs Series #1) and The Phantom Diaries, which is an inspiration from her extensive trips to France.

Having traveled to over 25 countries, lived in the American South, in California, Las Vegas, and briefly in England; Kailin Gow feels blessed to be able to use her experiences and inspirations to bring characters and stories from the places she visit, to life.

From visiting Romania, she was asked to write stories about vampires; visiting the Black Forest in Germany and seeing the castles of Europe inspired her to write fantasy; visiting Asia's mystical mountains inspired her to write action adventure and mythological dystopians. From her experience in college as a peer counselor and her volunteer work with women's shelters, she was inspired to write contemporary romance with social issues for women, new adults, young adults, and teens. Having faced adversity, including battling stereotypes and bullying, Kailin Gow has become a well-known speaker and figure in media. Her adventurous bold spirit has taken her around the world, where she has ridden on top of elephants through jungles, hand-fed sting rays, studied kung fu from a Shaolin Temple monk, and learned cooking from a celebrity chef.

Compelled to write her first fiction book because of 9/11, Kailin Gow now has over 100 fiction books published with a handful of non-fiction books.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Summer Beach Read 14 juin 2012
Par Always YA at Heart - Publié sur
I really loved this book. It is the perfect summer read. Nat, Drew, and Rachel Donovan are spending the summer with their childhood friend, Summer Jones, who they haven't seen in three years, and a lot has changed in those three years...they have all grown up. Summer is no longer the 13-year-old with braces, Drew is the star football player and is totally hot, and Nathaniel is pretty hot himself. As they reunite at Summer's Aunt Sookie's Malibu beach house, they not only rekindle their childhood friendship, but their relationships take a turn in a new direction. Summer now not only has the attention of the Donovan boys, but also of Astor Fairway, the handsome television star, and suddenly her life is more complicated than she ever dreamed.

This is a great contemporary romance. I really liked Summer. She is really sweet and has everyone's best interest at heart. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, which makes trying to decide which guy she wants that much harder, especially when she really loves them all. Even though the characters are all young, they are very responsible, and when Aunt Sookie becomes ill, they all pitch in to do whatever they can to help. Even in the midst of tragedy, they find their friendships strengthening. This is a fun and enjoyable YA romance, but the characters also face issues like divorce, depression, suicide, and the death of a loved one. As for the three hotties, Drew, Astor, and Nat, I am team Drew all the way. He is absolutely yummy. I am looking forward to the second book in the Loving Summer Series to see where Kailin Gow takes the story from here. This is the first book I have read by Kailin Gow, and I am really looking forward to checking out more of her books. If you love contemporary romance, then this is a really enjoyable read and I would definitely recommend it.

I had to jump right in and start reading this book even though I was in the process of reading another book. My book will just have to understand that when it comes to a Kailin Gow book others just have to wait.

First of all I am liking Kailin's venture into the YA romance genre. I came to know Kailin's writing through the Frost Series and the Desire series (both I love!!!). Her writing just sucks me in no matter what the genre is. Maybe I'm a little biased because I feel that you can't go wrong with a Kailin Gow book and I will tell you why. She is an author who writes characters that the reader can connect with and care about. Her writing allows the story to unfold at just the right pace. She allows her reader to discover and feel throughout her stories. I just love to read Kailin Gow's books.

Anyway, on to this offering, Loving Summer. What an appropriate title because I am loving this book. This had a love quadrilateral. Summer had three love interests and each of them were easy to love. Summer is such a loving person that makes the people around her want to be better. She is like the sun and the boys just orbit around her. I have to admit that towards the end I was getting frustrated with trying to figure out who I thought she should be with. I definitely have my opinion and I hope the next book goes my way. Summer's Aunt Sookie's story is heartbreaking. Had me in tears. My father is diabetic so I made a connection to that story line.

I don't want to give any of the story away. It is a quick read not quite 300 pages. It is a perfect read for the summer since the setting is a beach house in California. It has that summer feel. I recommend this book and any other Kailin Gow book for that matter. I am making my other books wait another day or two while I read the next installment from the Desire series, Passion. Like I said a Kailin Gow book moves to the top and all the rest have to wait.

If you couldn't tell from all the gushing, I do recommend reading Loving Summer. Pick it up you'll be glad you did.

I was amazed by this book. I am a very meloncholy reader most often, but this book made me smile, laugh and cry.I crie. I'm not used to crying during a book. I must day that kailin tow is overall my favorite author. She left me hanging and wanting more every time I picked it up. Summer is a very unique and quirky person who is very sweet. But I have to day that I do not think summer is the main character in this story. In the series yes, but in this particular book, I believe that aunt sookie is the main character. I like the song misery and others in the album hands all over by metro station for this books songs. All of this album to me is a good sum of this book. This is a definite reccomendation. I have never read a book quite so good. WELL DONE!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Review: Loving Summer by Kailin Gow 5 juin 2012

Book: Loving Summer by Kailin Gow
Pages: 210
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Source: Sent from The Edge Books

Short Synopsis: Summer always enjoyed spending her summers at Aunt Sookie's house along with the Donavan's, Nat, Drew, and Rachel. But it's been three years since they've seen each other, and everyone has changed since then.

My Thoughts: Not quite as good as Gow's Saving You Saving Me series, but still an interesting read with exciting characters.

Summer had always loved spending her summers at her Aunt Sookie's place. Along with the Donavan's, she always felt like she could be herself. But it's been three years since she's seen Aunt Sookie and the Donovans as well, and couldn't be more excited to see her old friends once again.
But this summer is a year that Summer and the Donavan's will never forget. As summer helps out her aunt with the acting academy, Summer meets Astor Fairway, a famous celebrity, and the two start to develop a relationship.
But Summer didn't expect to get so close to the Donavan brothers either. Summer's long time crush on Nat has re-hashed once again, and Drew starts to develop feelings for Summer as well. But things aren't all fun and games in the household. Summer discovers that their aunt Sookie has become seriously ill, and the Donovans' parents are having their own problems too. Summer does everything she can to help aunt Sookie and her acting academy, while the Donovans face the reality of their parent's current issues. Can Summer survive this summer, and find out who she truly has feelings for?

I seriously have no idea why I haven't picked up a Kailin Gow novel until this year. I really enjoy her writing style. The characters and plots are unique, with romances, and drama, I felt such sympathy for the situations that the characters are thrust into.
I loved reading how each relationship developed between Summer, Drew, Nat, and even Astor, and how they were very different from each individual as well. I however wasn't a fan of the fact that Summer was a bit too free with her feelings. In this first novel, she manages to kiss all the boys involved, but doesn't really proclaim her feelings for one boy, or tell the others that she had kissed someone else.
Aside from the romance involved, I was a bit disappointed that Summer didn't really spend as much time with her best friend Rachel, and that there didn't seem to be much of a closeness with the two. I was really sympathetic towards the situation between their aunt Sookie, and the Donovans' parents. In general, this novel is filled with a lot of romance, drama, and I can't wait to see who Summer actually ends up with. P.S., I'm team Drew all the way!

Would I recommend this novel: Yes

Rating: I give this book a 4/5.

When I first saw the cover for Loving Summer I thought, boy that reminds me a lot of the covers for Jenny Hans summer series. I pushed the thought aside and read the description. Guess what! It's sounds a lot like the description for The Summer I turned Pretty by Jenny Han. Look!

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer--they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along

Loving Summer by Kailin Gow

They never thought things would change as much as they did...and it all began with them falling for and loving Summer

It's okay to take a moment... go on and gag, you know you want to. I sure did. By showing you this, I'm admitting that I knew this was going to be a complete disaster going in. I'm not out to write bashing reviews. That's just not my style. You see, I heard about Kailin Gows books before. I have heard how many of her books are just poorly written copies of well written books. Having just come off my high from reading Jenny Hans books, and stumbling across this, I had to see for myself. It is said that curiosity killed the cat. I'm still alive but I sure would like a few hours of my life back.

I'm glad I read it though, not that I don't trust other readers, but now I know for myself never to pick up a book by this woman again.

Lets talk main characters.

Summer = Belly
Drew = Jeremiah
Nate = Conrad

Need I say more?

Now, Loving Summer isn't exactly like The Summer I Turned Pretty. It takes place in Malibu California for one.. but guess what! The beach house is modern, decorated to look like a new England beach house. Ha! What a clever coincidence. There are some extra characters thrown in for originality. The family drama is similar and you have "coping with loss". Just slightly different scenario's and substitute a different fatal disease. As far as the love angle goes, you have the two brothers wanting Summers attention, but to switch it up, lets throw a hot movie star boy in there too!

Loving Summer fell flat compared to the Summer Series. Gow tries to pull from their childhood memories to create a deep connection between them all, but it comes off as forced, cheesy and unrealistic. Last summer my hubby and I purchased some store brand sugar free fudge pops, thinking they were going to be better for us. Well, they were alright I guess, but in the end, there was no magical feeling left on my tongue, just a really bad taste in my mouth. This is very much how I feel about Loving Summer.

I don't understand how this even happens. What possesses someone to steal another persons work, tweek it, and send it off to the world with their name on it. The whole thing just makes me sick. Anything for a buck I guess. I could go on and on, but I just have nothing more to say about this garbage.

I'm not going to tell you all what to do, but I sure as heck won't be spending a dime on another one of Gows Knock Off Wonders. No thank you!
