HASH(0x90f94d38) étoiles sur 5 A Powerhouse - Even With A Single Card Using Triple Monitors 24 avril 2014
Par Angelo - Publié sur Amazon.com
Achat vérifié
First off, I am not using crossfire, just a single card, and it's a beast.

Physical: This card is absolutely gorgeous. I have never owned a GPU that looks as nice as this card. I want to show it off, unfortunately you have to hide it in your case. The card is extremely well built. You can tell MSI put time into the design and style. Nothing about this card makes you think they cut corners or went with cheap parts. All high grade capacitors, fans, and solid metals.

Performance: I am not a bit-miner and never plan to be, I bought this card with the intention of gaming. This card tears through anything I throw at it. For example, I can play Battlefield 4 in Gaming Mode (977mhz) and get a constant 60+ frames per second in Eyefinity (Resolution: 5760x1080p), and the temperature stays around ~60 degrees Celsius after hours of gaming. When putting the card in OC Mode (1007mhz) even a single card gets pretty warm. I was getting around ~78 degrees Celsius with no noticeable performance gains, just more noise and heat. So I stay playing in Gaming Mode.

Noise: After playing a demanding game for one hour+ I noticed some pretty steady fan noise. Nothing to be concerned, and quieter than a stock cooler. But once you start stressing the card with Eyefinity, you'll hear the fan, but nothing concerning. When in idle/on the web/emails/etc. the card is silent.

Heat: On a single card setup and had no issues keeping the card under 80 degrees Celsius even in the most demanding games and using the preset 1007mhz overclock. You can easily feel warm air flows out of your case which is normal. It never feels too hot at any time.

Conclusion: If you want a high quality card, built with care, that will play games with ease, even in a triple monitor Eyefinity setup, this is it. I cannot say anything about crossfire setups, but if I were to purchase multiple GPUs, I would probably look towards the reference blower design: Pulls air in, pushes it through the card, and exhausts the hot air out of your case, rather then any of these non-reference cards that just circulate the air around your case without having it exit.

HASH(0x90fa0030) étoiles sur 5 It's okay. Better than reference, but not an enthusiast grade card. 15 janvier 2014
Par Isaha - Publié sur Amazon.com
The Good:
Stock gaming and OC profiles (977 Mhz and 1007 MHz versus the reference 947 MHz core)
Seemingly sturdy and beefy cooler - overhangs the side of the card by a little bit to accommodate the 10cm PWM fans. VRM plate connected to main heatsink!
Backplate! Not only does this help keep the card from sagging under the weight of the cooler, it looks nice too! Black in color to fit with the red + black theme. Gives protection to the card components and some cooling as well.
Quiet - max fan speed is around 2700 rpm and with 10cm PWM fans the card stays quiet
Packaging is nice, and protected the card well despite a certain parcel service's propensity to dropkick the box down flights of stairs.
VRMs stayed under 90C even under extreme load (scrypt mining) as shown by GPU-Z.
Hynix RAM on both my cards. Hynix being preferred vs Elpida for overclocking, most of the time.

The Bad:
With two cards in crossfire, the top card overheats and throttles. Ugh. This isn't a case airflow issue as my 2x Sapphire Tri-X 290s do NOT throttle.
Does not unlock to 290X, not unlockable per Hawaiiinfo12.

The Ugly:
Using more than one card guarantees every card but the bottom one will have heat issues. MSI's first priority was making a quiet card and it shows - the card struggles with extreme loads such as scrypt mining. My bottom card was hovering around 82C core, 85C/67C VRM1/VRM2 which is acceptable. However, my top card (5 slot gap between the two) was at 94C core and throttling, with VRMs up to 98C/75C. A little bit toasty...
MSI also cheaped out on components, using Magic inductors versus Coiltronic inductors. They are rated to lower amperage; overclockers and card abusers look elsewhere.

Conclusion:
This card will serve well in SINGLE card configurations where the primary purpose is GAMING. It is quiet and with a mild overclock from the factory will be better than a reference 290. However, I wouldn't pay much more than MSRP of a 290 Reference card ($399) for one of these as it is essentially a reference 290 under the hood, downgraded with cheaper components.

Other thoughts:
I also have 2x Sapphire Tri-X 290s. They are just as quiet if not quieter under comparable loads and run much, much cooler. If your case can fit them and you can obtain them around MSRP ($449) then they are the current best value (IMO) for non-reference 290 cards.

HASH(0x913a6708) étoiles sur 5 As good as expected but limited by experience and system 21 avril 2014

The title does not quite convey the experience I have had with this card. My previous system was not a slouch and it was not a hardcore system. The old card was an overclocked Sapphire HD 7850 on my current Gigabyte motherboard (ga-z77x-ud3h). There are 32gb RAM, multiple hard drives with a 64gb SSD drive as the boot drive. All parts considered it was an average to slightly above average performer in respect to games and graphic design systems.

There hasn't been sufficient time to really push the R9 290 very hard due to a power supply malfunction that left me dead in the water. The few applications I have tried do show some promise. The game Witcher 2 was nearly at max settings at 1680x1050 using the HD7850. With the R9 290 I was able to max it out but framerates did not seem overly effected in a great way but enough to enjoy less eye strain and video artifacts issues.

The graphics applications I run were tested more often before the power supply failure. I was able to run Photoshop/Illustrator CS6 (along with other Adobe apps) at 3840 x 2160 screen size very well with the only real drawback being my monitors inability to achieve great than 30hz at any resolution above 1920 x 1080. Other apps tested were MoI (Method of Inspiration) nurbs modeler, Silo3d polygon modeler, 3d Studio Max and Maxwell Studio and Render. These all performed much faster and even more reliably with the R9 290. If you do graphic work you should enjoy this cost effective alternative to much pricier video cards.

In general I am pleased with my purchase. My only criticism was when installing the card in my system. There was no video to my monitor regardless of what I did. I finally sent it back thinking it was a dead card but the replacement did the same thing. The problem was with my CMOS. I had to Reset the CMOS in order for the system BIOS to recognize the new hardware.

If after using the R9 290 longer I discover greater benefits over what has already been observed or if there is little difference between my old card and any thing else worth mentioning I will post those facts here.

I upgraded from an HD6950 that I had since 2011 and I gotta say that it was worth the wait, it's running everything I'm throwing at it at maximum settings.

Since the card is from MSI I'm taking advantage of the Afterburner software, set the power limit to +50%, created a custom fan profile and set the frame limiter to 60fps, with an ambient temperature of 25C the card runs at about 65~70C under heavy load and at around 35~40C while idle.

All in all I'm happy that I decided to buy the card, for 349.99 has a great price / performance ratio.

Widely considered in the pc gaming community to be the premier manufacturer of AMD aftermarket graphics processing unit's, as per usual MSI doesn't disappoint with their version of the R9 290 4GB Gaming OC Edition. Outfitted with a matte black support plate truly showing MSI listens to their supporters and wishes to please the fans that remain dedicated for this exact reason.

The MSI R9 290 4GB Gaming OC Edition was created with performance in mind and does exactly that with graceful ease. If you're looking for a powerhouse graphics card and refuse to compromise, then look no farther. The R9 290 4GB Gaming OC Edition will provide you with Ultra settings and incredibly high frame rates, all the while gaming in high definition resolutions.

If paired with a high frequency multi-core cpu that doesn't bottleneck it's performance, it would be impossible to not be impressed with the accomplishments of MSI engineers. Bearing a Twin Frozr IV dual fan cooling configuration, the MSI R9 290 4GB Gaming OC Edition manages to remain cool even when at full load. If interested in overclocking, you won't find a better suited candidate from their competitors nor better overclocking software.

As per usual when paired with MSI Afterburner, you'll easily gain higher core and memory clock speeds with a few simple adjustments within seconds. There really isn't enough space in this review/recommendation for me to explain exactly how fantastic this card is, so I'll end with something simple that can easily understood.

Whether a fan of AMD or Nvidia, there's only one thing that matters in the long run...Buy a graphics cards that MSI designs.
