Présentation de l'éditeur

Rediscover Madeline, now available in board book format

The story of twelve little girls in two straight lines, the smallest one being Madeline, has delighted children for more than seventy years. Now the beloved Caldecott Honor Book is available in sturdy board book format and a reduced size perfect for small hands. While the text is slightly abridged, none of the charm of the original book is lost as a new format brings this classic title to a younger audience.

Biographie de l'auteur

Ludwig Bemelmans was a painter, illustrator, and writer for both children and adults. A world traveler, he spent most of his time in New York City or Paris. The original inspiration for Madeline was the result of a bicycle accident of an island of France. Hospitalized after being hit by the only car on the island, Mr. Bemelmans recalled, “The sisters in that small hospital wore large, starched white hats that looked like the wings of a giant butterfly. In the room next to mine was a little girl who had had her appendix out. In the ceiling over my bed was a crack ‘that had the habit of sometimes looking like a rabbit.’” A year later, back in New York City, he penned the first draft of Madeline on the backs of menus in Pete’s Tavern. The Madeline books rank among the most honored children’s books series. Madeline was named a Caldecott Honor Book, and the first of its five sequels, Madeline’s Rescue, won the Caldecott Medal and was a New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year. Mr. Bemelmans died in 1962, after completing Madeline’s Christmas. --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Relié .

BEWARE!!! It's ABRIDGED!!!! 19 mars 2012
Par no nym - Publié sur Amazon.com

This version is missing several pages from the original. The page where it says "Madeline was in his arm, in a blanket safe and warm" just isn't included. Nor is the page that says "Outside were birds and trees and sky, and so ten days passed quickly by." included. It does not indicate anywhere on the book that they have abridged it and yet my copy , and the 5 copies in the bookstore when i went to return it, all had those pages missing.

update: I noticed the edition here is listed as ABR. Still don't understand why they would abridge a classic like this but at least it says so, even if you do have to search for it.

Book ia abridged 16 janvier 2013

The book is abridged. About 8 pages of pictures and text were completely removed. As a result, the story takes abrupt jumps that require you to stop and get back on track. Also, the rhythm of the poem is interrupted. I had this book as a child and feel the abridge version spoils the story. However, it is a board book that can put up with rough use from my grandchildren. I decided to keep it and buy the unabridged version when they get older. I decided that an introduction to the story is better than not having heard it at all.

Great board book for toddlers! 12 avril 2012
Par afdavis2 - Publié sur Amazon.com

My almost 2-year old daughter had outgrown many of her "baby" board books, but was not yet ready for regular-paged children's books. This book had enough words and interesting pictures to keep her attention throughout the entire book. BUT it wasn't so long and wordy that she lost interest. SO - of course it doesn't include the entire original Madeline story --- it is a board book. For toddlers. There is only so much toddlers can handle and this book they can!!!!

Nice board book 18 décembre 2012

This is a nice board book version of Madeline. It is abridged, but the missing pages/passages were well chosen. It's missing the part where Dr. Cohn dials DAN-ton ten six, and some of the single-line pages are combined.

To The Tiger in the Zoo... 29 avril 2013

I admit I bought this one for myself, too! My son loves it as much as I did and it's in board book form so I can leave it in his room (he's 18 months) and not have to worry he'll tear the pages. I could read this book over and over - we read it three times last night. It's condensed from the original story but just the right amount so it can keep a toddler's interest. I like it because it has words and scenes that aren't in any other of his board books. We love Madeline, the bravest littlest French girl at Miss Clavel's house!
