Présentation de l'éditeur

"If urban fantasy could be bottled, then this story is a shot-glass full of awesomesauce." - Dark Side of the Covers Reviews

When monsters appear in Los Angeles, Maggie MacKay is on the job. No one is better at hauling the creepy crawlies back where they belong. No one, that is, except her dad, who disappeared in the middle of an assignment.

Now an elf named Killian has shown up with a gig. Seems Maggie’s uncle teamed up with the forces of darkness to turn Earth into a vampire convenience store, serving bottomless refills on humans.

The only hope for survival lies in tracking down two magical objects and a secret that vanished with Maggie’s dad.

WARNING: This book contains cussing, brawling, and unladylike behavior. Proceed with caution.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Zippy and fun ride through an alternate LA 2 décembre 2011

As a fan of old school Janet Evanovich and all Charlaine Harris, I'm always looking for novels with a combination of fun and grit. Maggie For Hire has an abundance of both. Zipping you through a recognizable LA with some serious SciFi/alternate universe twists, Kate Danley has created a protagonist who is at the same time tough and quirky. She's laid down a fantastic back story that she will be able to pull threads from for many novels to come (which I look forward to!) This is an excellent choice for those who have run out of Sookie Stackhouse novels, or simply run out of patience with Evanovich for regurgitating the same plot lines.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not as good as I expected based on reviews 15 mai 2012

I love a great paranormal book, and this one had some solid aspects, but it just wasn't the whole package.
Maggie was very sarcastic, which I normally love, but after awhile it got a little tiresome and predictable. Instead or random sarcasm, it was continual which made the book seem longer than it was. There were a few times I had to stop and walk away from it because I wanted to see what happened but I needed a Maggie break.
I liked the 2 different worlds and the travel, it had some intriging aspects and that is what kept me going even though I did not love Maggie.
The book did not have romance, it was pretty much straight paranormal. Lots of curse words for those that are offended by that.
Overall, I felt this was average, with occasional moments of great originality. It was those moments that kept me reading.
With that said, I may again try this author in the future to find out if she develops Maggie in a better way. I think I paid 3.99 for this, and that did not bother me, I know have paid much more for much worse.
If you love the genre give it a shot, but don't go in expecting it to knock your socks off.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Action-packed danger and fun! 17 avril 2012

For those of you who've read the True Blood series, it's easy to explain the overall tone and feel of this book. There's light-hearted humor, a hint of romance, occasional gross-outs, tons of action, and a serious plot line beneath it all.

Maggie strongly reminds me of Sookie Stackhouse. She never lets fear stop her from doing the right thing and is unimpressed by supernatural beings. There's also a lot of Stephanie Plum in her (Janet Evanovich's bounty hunting spitfire heroine). Maggie is a delightful and intriguing woman, and it's a pleasure getting to know her.

Maggie lives in a supernatural dimension with portals to earth. Her job is to track bad guys and return them to their own dimension and jail. When she is approached by a sexy hunk of an elf (Killian) who wants to hire her for an unusual job, she fearlessly (possibly foolishly) accepts.

Vampires are trying to break the boundary between the dimensions, and if they succeed, the human race will become nothing more than a memory. The moment Maggie and Killian start asking questions, they become targets. Now they have to figure out what the vamps are up to while fending off attacks!

I don't want to give away anymore details and ruin it for anyone. However, I can tell you the plot thickens considerably after that. We are introduced to several other types of supernatural beings, both good and evil. There are also a priest, a cranky old chinese man who sheds light on the magical items the vamps are using to destroy the boundary, Maggie's nagging psychic mother, and her completely normal human sister. The character development is excellent, and the sheer variety of characters is entertaining to say the least!

There are more errors than any real book I've read but only a fraction of the mistakes we see in most free e-books. Obviously an effort was made, and I respect and appreciate Ms. Danley's work more because of it.

I really enjoyed the journey this book took me on, and I will be keeping watch, hoping to meet Maggie and Killian again some day. It's a rare gift to be given - a mystery with thrills, wit, humor, a wide range of interesting characters, courage, loyalty, supernatural elements, and new ideas/concepts. Now that I know it's possible to find all that in one place, I want more!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Average is probably the best I can say about Maggie 2 mai 2013

This genera of fantasy/scifi has exploded in the past decade or so and as an avid urban fantasy, kick-ass female lead-reading junky, I am happy that there are more books to slake my apetite. This book was one of the not-so-good ones. I finished it, but it was a chore. All the characters are not well developed, and Maggie herself was shallow and inconsistent in her actions and development. The fight scenes were poorly choreographed and not believeable, and the storyline itself was weak and full of holes. Of course there are the occasional editing/typo gramatical errors, but I could (and often do) overlook that if the story itself is solid (especially because I got this book for free). This is the first book I've read from Ms Danley, and much to my surprise, I reached the end of the novel and saw that she has won a number of awards and published other books! I have to assume that they were not as lackluster as this one.

Campy, lazy, trite humor. Deus ex-machina happy ending.

the most difficult thing our heroine had to do was not sleep with her partner the gorgeous elf who constantly flirts. I mean of course he wants her, she's so funny and capable. but maybe they are saving that for the sequel.

this is lazy urban fantasy. i love urban fantasy but it seems like everything is the same now.

she is the tough-talking, special-powers having, able-to-kick-ass-of-men-double-my-body-weight(wait is that too many hyphens?) troupe that urban fantasy consists of these days.

there was no climax or character development.
her information gathering is composed of going to the scary bar in town and buying a stranger a drink: "i shouldn't be telling you this, i will be killed later, but i mean you did buy me a shot of no-name booze, seems like a fair trade"

from there on out shes just kicking ass left and right. i mean vampires, ghouls, doppelgangers, mafia-like doormen and all manner of everything fall to her knifes and bar knuckle fighting tactics. seriously i'm supposed to believe she is just a huge street brawler?
in the end i just wanted her to stop making lame jokes while she kills vampires.

its hard to believe in any way she is gunning for her life. this read like fan fiction
