3.0 étoiles sur 5 Fun Light Read, not in love 22 octobre 2012

I enjoyed the first book but found it to be kind of lacking in character development and character relationship building. This one had the same problems for me. I just didn't care too much for the characters and for me that's pretty key. Don't get me wrong, I liked the characters, but in the same way I would someone I just met -- before I knew enough about them to form a full opinion. I guess I felt this book lacked any real depth as far as character development goes. It was a fun, light read. But I am not too interested in reading the next one.

Just as an FYI: I enjoy Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Faith Hunter and a myriad of other genre writers with some kick ass female leads.

Ever since reading MAGGIE FOR HIRE, I have been awaiting a sequel. Well it is now here and was well worth the wait. Maggie, her dad, her mom, sister and Killian are all here, along with Vampires, Werewolves, ghosts, brownies and other kinds of creatures from the Other Side. Enjoyed finding out more about Maggie's family and the things that made her become a Magical Tracker. Couple of plot twists added to the fun. Things get a little tight for the good guys, but when it comes to the rough & tumble, Maggie kicks butt with the best, The 2nd best world walker (Her dad's #1) doesn't disappoint. Bout my only complaint is that I have finished it and have to wait for the next one.

No spoilers...

I bought this book only because it was book two, and I had rather enjoyed book one.

What I really liked about this book, was that it was BETTER than the first book. Right down to the one or two little things that bothered me in the first one, that were nonexistent in this one.

The only thing I didn't like about this book, was that it ended.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one, like the first, it was a complete page turner, and I finished it (sadly), in one reading.

Recommend it, and am looking forward to book three, when it comes out!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Love this book! 12 juillet 2012

Last year I picked up the first book in the Maggie MacKay series, and was thoroughly impressed with the characters, the setting, the action, and how much the story sucked me in. I couldn't wait for the next book to come out. In this second book, Kate Danley has outdone herself. I read this book in about 2 days, and would have probably read it all in one sitting if I hadn't had to go to bed or work!

The story in this book is great, and the characters have just the right feel to them. Maggie can be a bit crude, and use some foul language, but I would too if I had to deal with vampires and werewolves!

I love how the author mixes in real locations and features of the Los Angeles area along with the fantasy "other side". Her use of mythological creatures just flows so easily. You can definitely tell she's done her homework.

I very much recommend this book! Happy Reading!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not So Smart Vampire Hunter... 7 janvier 2015

I thought the first Maggie for Hire book was not too bad; so continued with this 2nd book. There were many things that bothered me in this book. Because two of the worst may be a little bit of a spoiler, are noted at the end of my review. This was not a terrible read, as I did make it to the end of the book. I did not appreciate the "tongue in cheek" version of Urban Fantasy. I did see that other readers enjoyed this style and did not expect it to be at all serious.

There is constant banter and wise cracks going on between Killian, Maggie and her family, which to me are not very amusing, and at times distracting me from the story and the action. Maggie continues to make ridiculous analogies trying to explain each situation.

The action scenes did not have a good flow and just did not get my heart beating.

It is one thing to have a little humor in the face of peril, but Maggie's mother did not have a serious moment throughout the whole time their lives were in danger and she was such a nag. I do realize it was because she saw the future and knew everyone would live through the situation, but it still was a bit much. Maggie's father never answers his cell phone and never fills Maggie in on what is going on, which ultimately has an impact on her safety. She never confronts him about this, just makes a joke.

The characters did not emanate any type of emotion, even in life and death situations. Usually, when I read a book, I feel like I am with the characters on their journey. I cry with them and laugh with them. While reading this book, I was just as the characters, reading the pages without much emotion.

The two worst things in the book for me (small spoiler alert):

No. 1) Maggie takes a flash photo of a vampire to put on Facebook, revealing her hidden location. Maggie is supposed to be an experienced-magical Vampire hunter/tracker. Their lives are in the balance and all she can think about is to take a photo for Facebook?

No. 2) Maggie conveniently senses vampires some of the time in the book, but not other times. Maggie failed to sense a most important vampire upon meeting him several times.

I don't think I will continue with book 3.
