Very good debut, however.... 27 septembre 2005
L'évaluation d'un enfant - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
....this is very different from their other albums. Where the following albums explored technical death metal and even jazz fusion, this is much more of a thrash/speed metal album. Lyrically, it's pretty similar to the later albums, although it's more scientific and medical oriented. Martin Van Drunen's vocals are delivered in a more shouted style in contrast to the tortured sounding growl on Consuming Impulse. The reason for these differences may be due to the fact that this is the only album with guitarist Randy Meinhard, he was soon replaced after this album by Patrick Uterwijk. These things aside, this is still a great album and is definitely worth checking out for Pestilence fans and fans of extreme metal. It can be hard to find due to the fact that it's out of print(it was originally issued in 1988 on Roadrunner Records). It was reissued by Displeased records in 2000 with the Infected and Dysentery demos added as bonus tracks. It can be found on various underground music distributions sites. Once again, to the other reviewer, this ISN'T death metal, it's thrash/speed metal, and it's possibly their fastest album. Any real metalhead can tell the difference between death and thrash. All metalheads do yourself a favor and track this album down(with bonus tracks if you can), it's a very underrated album that never got the recognition that their other albums did. It's also very well produced for 1988. Many fans overlook and are oblivious to the fact that this band started as a thrash band. By the way, i'm 20, but I just didn't want to register.

death metal diamond in the rough 16 janvier 2014
Par Donald Roberts - Publié sur Amazon.com
this album is awesome from start to finish . oddly enough, Martin Van Drunen's debut with Pestilence souunds uncannily similar to Brett Hoffman's debut on Malevolent Creation's first album The Ten Commandments ; both albums capture the youthful , unbridled thrash/death metal ferocity of the late 80's . I actually like this album better than Consuming Impulse . The guitar solos cut through the pummeling double bass drums and spacey bass lines like a scythe . Much like Posessed's Seven Churches album, Pestilence's debut leans more on the thrashy side with hints of death metal flavor. This album , along with Death's Scream Bloody Gore , the aforementioned Posessed /Malevolent Creation albums and Kreator's Pleasure To Kill serve as the foundation to the flurry of death metal that exploded in the early to mid-nineties. I was fortunate enough to snag a copy of the re-mastered edition of Malleus Maleficarum and it sounds great considering the age of the album ; this release stands the test of time amongst the other great death metal debuts. It's a relentless assault from start to finish . Pestilence would later move on to finesse their songwriting with jazz influences and tech-death but this album exemplifies their power to write heavy , straightfoward thrashy death metal . A must own album for all die hard fans who closely followed the genre since its inception.
Scorching Debut from Pestilence 7 juin 2011
Par J. Hill - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
I had heard other Pestilence albums before this one, so the only thing I wondered was if it would sound kind of primitive compared to more recent output. After listening to Malleus Maleficarum quite a few times, I think it holds up. It's almost hard to believe this came out in 1988; Pestilence truly was one of the earliest, most innovative of the first wave of death metal bands to develop. This album shows that they had a unique sound coupled with precision and tightness that's surprising for a debut. The songs are fast, brutal death/thrash, but with signs of their later progression into technical realms. Heavy riffs, skillful solos, and rapid-fire vocals highlight each track, making this an extremely impressive first album. Vocalist Martin Van Drunen's sound definitely seems to have been adopted by Patrick Mameli on later releases, but Van Drunen barks out his lyrics at a faster pace and with an almost infectiously rhythmic flow. Great band, ten quality songs, five-star album.

mediocre - check out Consuming Impulse 18 mai 2003

The first release from Pestilence and it is "ok" at best. Decent recording, decent songs, but nothing really compelling to set them apart from the average death metal band.
However, I'd like to direct your attention to their Consuming Impulse CD which is an absolute death metal masterpiece.
