Mamas & Papas 2nd Album - In Mono 24 septembre 2013
Par gassy goon - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Praise be - The Mamas & The Papas 2nd album is reissued on CD and Vinyl album! Plus, it's the Mono master , which has never been on CD. The Mamas & The Papas in Mono sound a bit different than in stereo. You hear a fuller group sound on the Mono version, as the stereo has the vocals seperated on different sides of the speakers. This newly remastered original Mono version sounds just amazing. The opening song, NO SALT ON HER TAIL, is one of the greatest tracks that they ever recorded. With Denny's lead, and strong support from Cass, you hear that classic M&P blend . Ethereal, heavenly, majestic can only describe the sound of this album opener. It should have been the new single when the album was released in September 1966. On this Mono version, the vocals are more pronounced , with the strings/orchestration more in the background than in the stereo version. For more historical value , Ray Manzarek of The Doors plays organ on this song. This album features more original material than the first album, and that is one reason why I think it is pure Mamas & Papas. The 2nd track is just as strong, and another major hit singles contender that never was, TRIP, STUMBLE AND FALL co-written by John & Michelle. The harmonies & interplay are as complex and as beautiful as could be , with layer upon layer adding vocals. Lyrically, it offers advice on both relationships or drugs. Another of their greatest songs. DANCING BEAR features a beautiful Denny lead vocal, on a folk type tune, with flutes, strumming acoustic guitar and Michelle & Cass' backgrounds. It would be released as a single, minus the flute solos over a year later in late 1967. WORDS OF LOVE would be the first hit single to feature Cass on lead, a 2 minute showstopper of a tune with Cass out front of a honky tonk arrangement and a Top 5 hit. MY HEART STOOD STILL illustrates how the group could take an old Rodgers & Hart song, change it and sing their souls out, all in less than 2 minutes. DANCING IN THE STREET ends Side 1 with Cass on lead as the band jams. It's one of the best examples of how the studio musicians, dubbed The Wrecking Crew excelled at playing . The opening guitar licks, with Cass coming in with " Calling out around the world are you ready for a brand new beat " was another call out for everyone to join in . The Mamas & The Papas were inclusive, and their music made everyone feel included, from kids to hipsters to adults. And dig that solo keyboard on this track, as Cass & Denny play around in their Mugwump language as the band jams on. Martha Reeves herself has said that Cass and the group did an amazing version from her original. That is high praise.

Side 2 begins with their 3rd hit single, I SAW HER AGAIN, co-written by John & Denny . This is the single version which does not contain the orchestration break solo. Another Top 5 hit, this song is also famous for being written about the love triangle of John, Michelle & Denny , as well as the mistake that was left in when Denny sang " I saw her, I saw her again last night ". STRANGE YOUNG GIRLS is the most psych oriented track the group ever did. John's trippy lyrics of " walking the strip, sweet soft and placid " which Denny sings, then Cass has the next line of " offering their youth on the altar of acid " is the most unique thing in their catalog. With Cass & Denny each alternating singing lines , it's taken at a slow pace and accentuated to another level by electric violin! An amazing atmospheric song both lyrically and vocally . I CAN'T WAIT is the first to feature a lead by John with Cass and a solid Dunhill folk-rock backing. It's good but clearly not the strongest song here. EVEN IF I COULD is John's 2nd lead vocal, beautifully played on 12 string guitars & keyboards out front. On the Mono version here, the response background vocals are missing on the first verse, which is on the stereo version. It's one of the more noticeable differences here. THAT KIND OF GIRL features a John & Denny co-lead vocal with some biting lyrics, and some great electric guitar. One of the hardest rockers the group ever did, and very cool ending with the fuzz guitars and vocal refrain of " She's one of those girls ". The closer , ONCE WAS A TIME I THOUGHT , illustrates how disciplined & diverse the group could be. Lasting one minute, the group sings together with spare accompaniment , sounding out both folk & jazz influences. Mamas & Papas albums always had superb sequencing, and this album is their 2nd masterpiece.

This new reissue has excellent sound, as well as beautiful packaging. Even if you have the previous version in Stereo that MCA issued on CD in 1987, you'll still want to own this version. The cover is nearly as famous as the hits and is faithfully restored, though the back cover of the digipac case now features song titles. The inside of the CD features the original back cover, minus the song publishers, and 1 page liner notes. The vinyl does not have the liner notes. There is not an interview with Michelle Phillips nor the original producer Lou Adler. I don't know why Sundazed does not go that further step with personal remembrances from the artists who made the music. Since this is a new , more complete restoration of this classic, and actually now historic album, it is incomplete not having quotes from Michelle at the very least. While other reissue labels like Real Gone Music and Light In The Attic are doing complete restorations of music, packaging and interviews with the artists themselves, Sundazed does not go that extra step. It's a missed opportunity. I'd rather read what Michelle Phillips or Lou Adler has to say about the making of this album than just a one panel synopsis of this important album and group. Otherwise, this is an excellent reissue of this most beloved album.

"THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS" (2nd release-1966) 24 octobre 2003
Par Un client - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
"This, the second album by the Mamas & the Papas, was recorded and released during the precise high point in their brief career, and, not surprisingly, one of their most tumultuous times. During the recording of the album, Michelle Phillips (temporarily estranged from husband John Phillips) was unceremoniously booted out of the band. Replacement Jill Gibson filled in for a brief period before Michelle was finally brought back into the band. (It's uncertain weather Gibson is on the album however.) The end result - while not quite as striking as a whole as their debut - is still magnificent. Aside from the hits "I Saw Her Again",which was possibly the hardest-rocking track the group ever recorded, and "Words of Love" (featuring Cass Elliot), the rest of the album has numerous highlights. Most notably, "My Heart Stood Still" (written by Rodgers and Hart) and "Once Was a Time I Thought" are perhaps the finest recordings that the group ever cut."

As good as their first album! 5 octobre 2009
Par Robert L. Frazier - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Although I born the year this album was recorded - 1966 - my mom gave me this album along with their first album "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears" and their third album "Deliver" which are still in my collection. This album is a stunning and magnificent follow-up to their debut album, "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears". In fact I think this album is just as good as their first album and here's why:

1. I feel that the group really hit their stride with this album. 10 of the 12 tracks are original songs written by John Phillips with two outstanding covers - "Dancing in the Streets" and "My Heart Stood Still" - the former featuring Mama Cass Elliot giving one of her best vocal performances. The latter, which was featured on their appearance on the "Rodgers and Hart Today" TV special is Michelle Phillip's personal favorite of all of their recordings and it's obvious why - it's less than 2 minutes in length but it builds to an amazing crescendo and their vocals were never better than on this song.

2. Considering all the internal strife and drama that was going on inside the band which led to Michelle being fired for two months during the summer of 1966, the original compositions benefit from all of the drama that was going on at the time within the group. As John Phillips once said, "This is what we call turning tragedy into publishing".

3. The two hit singles from the album, the rocking "I Saw Her Again" and the honky tonk feel of "Words of Love" showcase not only the continued vocal prowess of the group but also a more diverse style.

4. "Dancing Bear" is perhaps Denny Doherty's best vocal performance and is his personal favorite song that he did with the group.

5. "Once Was a Time I Thought" is one of the best acapella performances ever done by a pop group and really displayed their four-part harmonies.

All in all, this album really showed that the group had grown and is a testament to their talent and versatility. It's a shame that the CD is no longer in circulation because it should be in every true Mamas and Papas fan's collection!

Masterpiece! 3 août 2004
Par Gary Mark Morris - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Why John Phillips is not considered in the first rank of songwriters is incomprehensible. This is a typically masterful effort with soaring harmonies, brilliant singing, heartbreaking lyrics (listen to "Even If I Could") that maintains the spell it conjured on first release. No major AM hits here except, I think, "I Saw Her Again" - which others have noted is probably their hardest rocker. But the bittersweet beauty of these songs, the longing, is simply without peer, from the eastern-mystical riffs of "Dancing Bear" to the towering blend of voices on "I Saw Her Again." Incomparable and indispensable.

Their Classic 2nd Album! 26 octobre 2007
Par gassy goon - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This is an essential 60's album, and an important companion to the first Mamas and Papas album. There are more original songs written by John and one each co-written by John with Denny or Michelle. John's writing is at it's peak here, with songs that capture the essence of the group's sound . The interplay of vocals is the group at it's zenith. From the amazing opener NO SALT ON HER TAIL to the closing , acapella ONCE WAS A TIME I THOUGHT, each song is an essential M's & P's song. I value this album highly for all the original songs and only 2 covers, both of which are stellar - DANCING IN THE STREET and MY HEART STOOD STILL .

This album shows growth and the expansion of their sound lyrically and vocally. The hit songs are well-loved such as I SAW HER AGAIN and WORDS OF LOVE, but it's all the album tracks here that have always made this one of my favorite albums of all time. It's The Mamas & The Papas SOUND here on such magnificent original songs as TRIP STUMBLE AND FALL, EVEN IF I COULD, the trippy , unique STRANGE YOUNG GIRLS and the absolutely beautiful DANCING BEAR that features Denny Doherty in one of his very best recordings . The opening song NO SALT ON HER TAIL is a majestic , heavenly song sung by Denny and ethereal background vocals by Cass & Michelle. It would have been another massive hit had it been released as a single. Same with TRIP, STUMBLE AND FALL, which is another of the group's greatest songs that was an album track. A GREAT album which captures their genius for all time.
