Présentation de l'éditeur

Alexa Craig is well aware she’s known as “The Ice Queen” -- and not out of admiration -- but her reputation has served her well in her diplomatic career. Alien ambassador Lirzhan understands his people are viewed with suspicion and curiosity by the members of the Gaian Consortium, but the Zhore do not casually reveal themselves to outsiders -- not even to someone as intriguing as Alexa Craig.

But after their ship is attacked during a routine flight, the two strangers must rely on each other to survive on the supposedly uninhabited world where their escape pod has crashed. When Alexa and Lirzhan discover the secret hidden behind Mandala’s wild beauty, they must put duty before desire and risk everything to warn the Galactic Council of a conspiracy that could endanger their lives, their worlds, and the future they have begun to imagine together.

If you're a fan of Christine Pope's science fiction romance series (The Gaia Consortium), you've noticed that the various alien and human factions don't always play nice with others despite their official alliance.
In the Mandala Maneuver, the author ratchets up the planetary intrigue by stranding Gaian ambassador Alexa Craig and Lirzhan, a diplomat from a race of honorable, empathic aliens called the Zhore, on a seemingly idyllic planet that's home to deadly predators and even deadlier secrets. For Alexa, known as "the Ice Queen" among her colleagues and Lirzhan, whose people are notoriously private--so private at they do not even show themselves to outsiders, but cover themselves completely with hoods and gloves, leaving others to wonder what they really look like, their shared ordeal leads to a surprising series of discoveries. Suffice it to say before the book is over Alexa gets a look under Lirzhan's hood and she is NOT disappointed. (Pope has a real knack for creating intriguingly sexy aliens.)
The Zhore were first introduced in Pope's novella, "Breath of Life," and each time they appear, the author has given them more detail, filling in their history, their culture, and their mores in a way that suggests a wider mythology is at work. Her universe is populated with strong and passionate characters who move about their worlds in believable and entertaining ways. (In the Gaian Consortium, women do a lot more than open hailing frequencies.)
This book is a lot of fun because along with the expected romance, Pope also delivers a complex conspiracy that threatens not just the protagonists, but everyone on both their worlds.

This is the fourth book in a series (not counting the short story) and can easily be read as a standalone. So far, I've only read one of the previous books, but I had no trouble following the storyline.
The important plot ideas are given in the summary above, so I'll just give you my take on the book:

First and foremost, this is a romance. There are a few short action sequences, but conflicts are more often resolved through talking rather than through physical fights. Much of the tension originates in the different cultures and backgrounds of the two main characters. Lirzhan and Alexa come from two fundamentally different peoples, who might not exactly be at war, but who aren't friendly either. If Alexa and Lirzhan want to be together, one of them has to make a huge sacrifice. The big question is whether (and how) they can make it work.
I really enjoyed reading chapters from Lirzhan's point of view. He's a likable hero. Probably not what you'd call an alpha hero, he isn't dominant or openly possessive enough for that. It makes for a nice change from many other romances that tend to go overboard with the alphaness. Lirzhan lets Alexa make her own choices and her own mistakes. He doesn't think that he knows everything best. He shows that he truly respects Alexa as a person in her own right.

I truly enjoyed this book. It's a lovely romance with two likable main characters. The story is well-written and entertaining and effortlessly managed to keep my interest. If you know and like other books by this author, then you'll probably like this one, too. And if you haven't read the author before, this is a good place to start.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A good read, but certainly not with her best 23 février 2014

While the story had potential and several scenes were well crafted and had emotional depth, the overall story just did not capture me. A lot of telling rather than showing occurred, so much so that I found myself scanning rather than reading. Too much repetition of the characters' particular situations did not help matters. The story read like a skeletal version of perhaps ten events and character background plunged into a story. I had no sympathy for the H/h's supposed angst. The ending seemed unsurprising even as it felt contrive.

I will say that Christine Pope is a great writer; this story just didn't work for me. I will still check out her other stories to come in this trilogy.

It had a good plot line. The heroine and hero were believable. I would like to see more books along this genre.
