Présentation de l'éditeur

Celebrity X (more famous than Oprah) departs Rome on a private jet bound for the Lake City Marathon. Race director Peter McDonald arrives at the Expo for an interview with TV reporter Christine Ferrara, new in town. Peter and Christine find love almost immediately, but when will she learn the dark secret that clouds his life?
Thus begins the fascinating 72-hour countdown to the Lake City Marathon, a race beset by problems: Will Peter lose his sponsor and job? Will hot weather threaten the health of runners? Can he keep the identity of Celebrity X secret? And for Christine: Why is Naní the supermodel clinging to Peter’s side? The race up front pits fast Kenyans against twin brothers from Minnesota. Among the women, the sudden loss of the world record holder opens the door for a flirtry Irishwoman and an unheralded podiatrist, who has not raced since injuries cancelled her college career.
Back in the pack, Naní raises money for charity, a New York Times reporter chases Celebrity X, and once-married color commentators bicker their way through the telecast. Marathon, amazingly, is Hal Higdon’s first novel, told in the grand tradition of fact/fiction books by James Michener (Hawaii, The Source) and Arthur Hailey (Hotel, Airport). If you are a runner, veteran or newcomer, or someone who has a friend who runs, Marathon will provide details about the sport that you never knew.

Great book not only for runners 28 décembre 2011

You will enjoy this book, if you are or aren't a runner it doesn't matter. This is a very entertaining novel, one of those books that is a pleasure to read.

I gotta say that by the time the character so called, Celebrity X, was in the middle of the Atlantic reading a book about the middle east, it was then obvious who he was. I wasn't sure about this character, but lets be honest, without him much of the marathon organization chaos/thrill would not have been possible.

It is a bit of everything: an insight into the organization of such a big event as a marathon (particularly the marathon it is based on ;_) ), professionalism, it has comedy, it has romance, tragedy, happiness, friendship, honor, loyalty, well can I say? a bit of everything!

If you are looking for a great, easy read, and a particularly fun book. Get it, don't doubt it go ahead and get it.
you wont regret it, you might even be inspired to get on running or visit the city where this marathon (the real one) is staged!!!

It's been a while since I read something so pleasurable.

Make Believe Marathon 27 novembre 2009
Par Trixie Bradley - Publié sur Amazon.com
Hal Higdon's Marathon begins on Thursday when a darkly clad man, a celebrity "more famous than Oprah," boards in Europe a private jet en route to the fictional Lake City Marathon, a race that not too coincidentally resembles the Chicago Marathon.

The countdown clock begins: 72:00:00, 71:59:59, 71:59:58. Just like the TV show "24." Suddenly, readers must cope with a whirlpool of characters and sub-plots. The race director meets a new girlfriend: When Peter Meets Christine. The world record holder is sick, throwing up in her hotel. Peter may lose his main sponsor. Hot weather threatens runners. Then Thursday evening, when the man amusingly nicknamed Celebrity X steps off that airplane, I almost laughed out loud when I learned his identity.

Has Higdon gone too far in his attempt to describe a marathon that never could happen in real life?

Possibly so, but once the countdown clock reaches 00:00:00 and the marathon begins, the story gets more complicated. Have there ever been more dramatic finishes in real-life races: the men, the women, and what happens around X? I didn't believe everything I in The DaVinci Code as well.

So suspend your disbelief for 456 pages if you want to enjoy a good read about a make-believe marathon and characters that would never exist in real life. Has Peter's new girlfriend Christine really made it almost to age 30 still a virgin? And what's that about his ex-wife? I needed to keep reminding myself: It's a novel! It's a novel! As one who once ran a marathon to raise money for charity, my favorite character was a supermodel doing just that. Fortunately, the author provides us with an up-front list of more than 50 characters to remind us who everybody is. Then there's that ticking clock.

Not quite the helpful training manual that the Runner's World writer has offered us in the past, but if you're looking for a fast read while tapering for your next marathon, this might be the book for you. And, if you're not a runner, but dating one, married to one, or are friend's with one and you want to know what goes on behind the scenes and/or leading up to the race....this is also the book for you.

Enjoyable read for both runners and non-runners 2 novembre 2009
Par RJH - Publié sur Amazon.com
A wonderful look at all the details that surround the planning, reporting, running or spectating of a large city marathon. The multiple experiences of all those involved in one race make for an exciting read. The story is interesting to me as a runner but should also capture the attention of non-runners. If you save it for a pre-race taper, be careful. You don't want to lose precious pre-race sleep because you can't put it down.
