Présentation de l'éditeur

Seventeen-year-old tagger Saira Elian can handle anything … a mother who mysteriously disappears, a stranger who stalks her around London, and even the noble English grandmother who kicked Saira and her mother out of the family. But when an old graffiti tag in a Tube station transports Saira to the nineteenth century and she comes face-to-face with Jack the Ripper, she realizes she needs help after all.

Saira meets Archer, a charming student who helps her blend in as much as a tall, modern American teen can in Victorian England. He reveals the existence of the Immortals: Time, Nature, Fate, War, and Death, and explains to Saira that it is possible to move between centuries – if you are a Descendant of Time.

Saira finds unexpected friendships at a boarding school for Immortal Descendants and a complicated love with a young man from the past. But time is running out for her mother, and to save her, Saira must embrace her new identity as she hides from Archer a devastating secret about his future that may cost him his life.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Never a detail forgotten, and great chacter development 28 janvier 2013

The book Marking Time is a wonderfully written book in the series "The Immoral Descendants". It is a very nice change from the popular YA books currently. It it has great character development and it grabs your from the very first page. I found that I could not put it down. In this book not a detail is ever forgotten. If something that seems small is mentioned, even as a side note, you will often find in this book that it will be brought back later as a bigger theme. I also often found that even when you are given insight from another character, the book will keep you guessing at ever turn of a page. Something that you thought you had predicted will not play out as it seemed it would. This book will stretch your mind to it's limit as it bends time, and physical limitations. If you are looking for a great book that you will fall in love with and will leave you wanting more this is most certainly the book for you.

I'm a little looser with my selections when I can get a free e-book and picked this one because of the time-travel theme. Boy, was I surprised with what I got! The books is excellent! It is a mix of time-travel, history, Harry Potter and Anne Rice, with all the good qualities of each. You learn about the characters little by little, and the more you learn, the more you care about them. The plot line is intriguing with enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. I learned about something called Parkour, or free-running, even looked it up on YouTube to find out more. So, my only problem is that when I finish the book there will be no more! Please April White, get crackin' on Volume II!

At the beginning, all I could think of was motion. It was like an explosion in your face when you opened to the first chapter and you read that the heroine was on the run. And when you thought that that was it and she stopped running, she went and ran again. The strange thing was it felt like you were running with her. It was all motion.

Then I learned that she was a vandal – a tagger and I thought: Here we go. A play on the rebel angle where she’s all angry at the world and make that rebelliousness cool while we’re at it. I was wrong. It wasn’t a lame attempt to make her all anti-establishment. April White somehow made that delicate balance to make the MC tough and vulnerable enough to know that she’s still human and real.

I loved how sensible Saira was. She was intelligent and smart and it showed through her actions. A little rebellious but it was tempered by her circumstances. All her actions and reactions were what I want to see in many of the YA heroines. She’s funny and could handle situations. She didn’t need no man to make her complete. She was independent and would exhaust all available resources, and herself, before admitting that she needed assistance. This fierce independence, her refusal to be close with other people, was also a part of her character development that spanned the entire story. She made peace with it, overcome if you must, and did it with aplomb and grace.

Marking Time took a little while to get used to – not in a bad way since the kind of writing done in this book is rare to find in most YA. I was basically as clueless as Saira was and I took the journey with her to discover the world of the Immortals’ Descendants. A little info-dumping here but the classes, especially the lecture of Mr. Shaw, were interesting.

It was at that moment during one of her interactions with Mr. Shaw, around that time she was asking about how to kill a Vampire, that I knew that I love this book.

The romance part was done right. It was handled magnificently. There was a time when I was in fear of another instalove pair but I underestimated Saira. I should have known. I think she’s the first MC I’ve met that didn’t swoon the instance the gorgeous boy said I love you. And that gorgeous boy was restrained too that although he loved her for a long time, he knew that he should be her friend first and that she should get to know him first just like he did when he was falling in love with her in the past which was yet to happen.

No angst-filled monotony which was definitely a huge plus. Despite Saira’s circumstances and her age, she was mature about her situation. She wasn’t perfect by any means. She was flawed, she made mistakes and she struggled but she learned from her mistakes – really learned and that contributed to her development as a character.

Secondary characters like Mr. Shaw and Ringo were also well-written. I read the sneak peek of the sequel and I am glad that we get to see Ringo again.

While everything was peachy-kin at the end, as well as it was, the book barely skimmed the world of the Immortal Descendants. They’re not sure that Bishop Wilder is really dead, they have the Families to deal with, now that mixed-bloods are walking around again and the prophecy is not fulfilled yet.

I look forward to reading Tempting Fate.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Average and Predictable 4 juillet 2013

Looking over some of the reviews for this book it is clear that there has been some social networking to get this book highly ranked. It is my duty to negate many of the fluff reviews. The book was not a page-turner, was not unique, and was very predictable.

Overall Opinion:
To put it mildly, the book was a mess. The story was all over the place, and time, and it seemed like the author was trying too hard. The reader had a hard time engaging because the point of focus changes too often. The story felt like the author was trying to mix Harry Potter, Twilight, and a drab history book from England all together. The only compliment I feel I can pay the book was that the editing was good. The author knows where to put breaks and when to end a chapter, and unlike many E-books there weren't any grammatical or spelling errors.

The main character (Saira) was semi-unique, but the story was destroyed by a multitude of minor characters. Many of these minor characters had nothing to do with the main story arc. The secondary characters who actually related to the story arc should have been more in focus. The villains involved were seen at such a distance that it didn't really matter if anything happened with/by/because of them. Saira herself was a bit super human overall, and I think the author realized that because Saira suddenly got sick in the middle of the book and was forced to be vulnerable.

The story was very disjointed. The main story arc which was set upon at the beginning really was skated over for a good 150 pages and then focused on at the very end. The author's sense of time was cloudy at best. I'm not even talking about time-travel, just time. One minute the sun is going down and the main character is walking with someone and having a short conversation, and the next moment the sun is coming back up with no explanation where the 10 or so hours went.
The author seemed to have a pile of story ideas but could not stick with one or two, so she shoved all into a bowl and hit power 7 on her electric mixer and threw it all in the book.
The author could have EASILY skipped the entire "school" section and saved us 100 pages of filler. The only benefit of the entire school section to the main story line was Saira looking at a hair in a microscope. This was the only true connection to the main story arc.

While a time-traveling parkour tagger is unique there were not many new ideas. We have our families of "magic", we have our werewolves, we have our vampires, and we have time travel. Nothing made this book stand out from the multitude of competing fantasy novels.

Make into a Movie?
Not at all. The focus is so lost through the middle of the book that nobody would be patient enough to care. By the climax of the movie everyone would be confused as to what time of day it is and if the villains really even mattered to the story at all.

If you are looking for a great and intense new fantasy based on outstanding reviews, this is not the book for you. If you got it for free and want to waste some time before bed or in the bathroom, this book is for you.
