Présentation de l'éditeur

A New York Times Best Seller!

In the spirit of JUDGE DREDD and the current hit series THE BOYS, MARSHAL LAW is a violent, satirical series about a futuristic law official charged with policing super-heroes gone rogue by any means necessary, all while fighting his own self-hatred for being the thing he hates most: a super-hero. Featuring art by Kevin O'Neill, illustrator of THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, the centerpiece of this massive volume is the original six-part tale in which Marshal Law hunts down the Sleepman, a serial killer who is somehow connected to the popular hero known as The Public Spirit.

Biographie de l'auteur

Pat Mills is one of Britain's most popular writers and comics editors, and is often credited for having revitalized the comics industry in Britain in the 1970s. After working on several war titles, Mills developed  morally ambiguous heroes including Nemesis the Warlock and the ABC Warriors. He continues to write dark science fiction series like Slaine and American Reaper, as well as several Doctor Who radio plays.

Wonderful Satire 23 mai 2013

Beautiful collection of an under appreciated 80s/90s series that started under Marvel's Epic line and jumped to multiple publishers over time. It is more satire than parody in the sense that most of it's jokes are very very dark, especially in the first half. It takes many of the principles of what makes a hero and perverts them by showing normal people given powers without any sort of nobility or special sense of responsibility. The Boys seems a like a nice tribute to Marshall Law without the Gonzo tone O'Neill/Mills uses.
The basic premise is that Marshall Law is a police officer, with powers but they're never used after the first issue, dealing with super-powered heroes who were given their powers to fight in a South American war (earlier wars are added in future issues and kind of throws off the vibe set up in the first story). He lives in San Futuro (San Francisco after a devastating earthquake)
The first story line deals with a Superman figure who's under suspicion for being a serial killer. Other stories deal with various superhero types like the Avengers, Batman, JSA, and the Legion. The Legion story has a lot of Aliens in it as well. Missing is a Savage Dragon team-up and a Marshall Law vs. Pinhead series.
You can see the evolution of the character as it goes on. Marshall seems to mellow and in the last storyline the character is a lot less harsh and more empathetic towards those around him. Some, like me, may not care for the change.
The book itself is beautifully colored and has a full color wraparound hardback binding.
If you enjoy Judge Dredd, The Boys, or Kick-Ass, then this would be a pleasure to read and reread.

Violent and awesome 4 mai 2013

A really cool story, not to mention the very nice hardback. This is very much a spoof of Judge Dredd, with better art and a much sillier, albeit very stark and sad world. There is definitely dark humor here and its definitely not for kids. If you can appreciate spoofs, or like a cool story and awesome artwork give it a try I purchased this months ago and it was finally released. So excited to finish it one more time.

Brilliant and a must have for all comic collectors 4 juin 2013

I do not have the hardcover edition yet but I do have the original 6 comics it came from in 1987 and I can tell it is one of the most brutal , exciting and satirical comics ever. I wish someone would make it into a movie and do it justice. When reading pay special attention to the little "signs" and graffiti posted everywhere in San Futuro they are hilarious. Marshal Law's dry black sense of humor is unbeatable. His loathing of corruption and excess held against "heroes" applies to his own boss as well. I don't want to say much more and ruin the story but please buy and read you won't be disappointed.
Fear And Loathing, Indeed! 12 décembre 2013

I have not picked this up, but I will. It was such a great series in all its hard to find series from the late 80's to the mid 90's. My only disappointment is that, mostly likely for licensing reasons, we don't get the three crossovers series he did with Pinhead from "Hellraiser", "The Savage Dragon" and "The Mask" which is a shame since all three add to the tale of Marshal Law. Still, worth owning since it was both venomous and witty. Definitely blazed the trail for comics like "The Boys."
Greatest super hero satire ever. 30 novembre 2013

Mills and O'Neill bring the greatest anti-hero ever in comics to life with Joe Gilmore, aka Marshall Law. A dark look at the truth behind super heroes, this collection, based in a dystopian, dark future, is not for the squeamish or those who worship the powered heroes. This is for anyone with a dark sense of humor who can see how silly it would be to go out in costume fighting evil. No one here is safe from the creative duo. DC, Marvel, Golden Age, Silver Age, even forgotten heroes are skewered with dark hearted fun. My personal favorite in here is Marshall Law Takes Manhattan, wherein the Marvel Universe gets an enema, Marshall Law Style. So if you like satire and aren't too squeamish... down load this now.
