Good book, Good Author, Some Issues 30 mai 2014

I purchased this book coming off of passing CCNP Route. It is a good read, and the author's writing style is very good and personable. I finished it last night, and all in all, it was worth the read, with a few issues below:

1. The author uses debug a lot to find issues. In production networks, this is a big no no as you risk freezing the router. It is true that you can run debug calling an ACL that calls the subnet you are interested in to reduce memory consumption, but the companies I've worked for at least, won't even let you do that on production networks. So unless you are in a lab environment, it's probably not going to help you.

2. A lot of the scenarios that are depicted have silly culprits, such as incorrect IP addresses, ports that were incorrectly shut down, etc... While I understand that these things do happen, and are usually more common than more bizarre issues, I still feel that some of the pages could have been used for more interesting culprits. I'm perfectly fine with this basic issues being included in the book once, but they tend to show up in multiple chapters. For example, about 5 months ago I ran into an issue where one of my HSRP routers was in standby state and the other was in listen. Why would that happen? Because one of my colleagues did a router refresh and forgot to take the old router offline. So we ended up having a 3rd rogue router on the network that was in the active state, killing branch connectivity. This would be a much cooler scenario in my opinion than one of the HSRP WAN ports being shut down.

Still, that being said, I know the primary focus of the book is helping with the TSHOOT exam, and Cisco's not going to throw an issue that complicated at you on the exam, so I won't knock it too harshly.

Now some of the highlights:

1. Rene's writing style is awesome. Very personable, easy to understand, enjoyable, funny ("If you don't know copy run start then SHAME ON YOU!" lol).

2. Chapter 1, 2 & 9 are fantastic. Lots of new toys to play with in these chapters.

3. Some new toys in other chapters to play with, like how to turn your ipv6 router into a DEC-HEX calculator.

All in all, a good read, and good to have on hand in your toolbox.

Loved this book!! 11 novembre 2013

Mr. Molenaar, did an excellent job going through realistic troubleshooting scenarios but explaining them in a simple manner that anyone could understand. But wow I enjoyed his approach he covered a lot of material in under 300 pages, with lots of graphics, he goes through troubleshooting the main Routing protocols, and then goes in-depth with cisco switches, a bit of security. Honestly, anyone that learns these lessons well, can do a superb job in the real world. It's like he shared secrets from his personal experience in the IT World, even if you don't want to obtain the CCNP R/S certification I would recommend this to anyone that would want to learn to master troubleshooting cisco routers/switches. Mr. Molennar spot on, my friend; I will encourage all my friends that are inspiring to become Network Administrators/Network Engineers to buy this book.

The topics are very well explained but I think they are not presented in a organized way, like the presence of more sub chapters.
