Amish Mystery threaded with adventure & romance 5 septembre 2012
Par Harold Wolf - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
UPDATE Sep 2012; This author WINS the ACFW Mystery Carol Award for her book in this series: "FALLING TO PIECES" (link provided at the end of this review.)

Shipshewana, IN, is real. Vannetta Chapman writes Amish mystery convincingly. It reads real. I like that. She does mystery to Amish Shipshe, what J. Karon did cozy quaint to Mitford. Chapman adds suspense to a horse-n-buggy village, like P. Gulley added humor to his Harmony, IN series. All good reading. I hope the "Shipshewana Amish Mystery" series continues forever. Like the others, it is Christian fiction.

Individual books are stand-alone by plot and events, but there is a core carry-through group of Amish and Englischers endearing to the series' readers. After two previous Amish murder mysteries, there is another Shipshe murder 50 feet from Callie's quilt shop. Having helped clear herself as a murder suspect 15 months earlier, it would not be long before her quilting needles were replaced by sleuthing tools. Her Amish quilting friends, Deborah, Melinda, and Esther, return equally involved. It's not exactly the Amish way, nor appreciated by Shipshe police.

Unfortunately Melinda's young Amish handicapped boy saw the attack. Worse, the attacker saw that he had witnessed. He's a 7-yr-old material witness of murder from the shadows of quilt material. The victim's shop competed feverishly with Callie's. Is she a suspect, again?
Another attack. The perp's intent needs rethought. For the 3rd time, will local cops need Callie's Agatha Christie sleuthing instincts? Of course the plot(s) get much, much more complex.

Men will like this heavy mystery, light on romance. Suspense adventure strongly includes several youth. It may also appeal to younger readers. Series previous: Falling to Pieces (A Shipshewana Amish Mystery), A Perfect Square (A Shipshewana Amish Mystery). Book includes a glossary, family groups, and discussion questions.

Happy times are flowing through Shipshewana, Indiana, that is until Aaron, Melinda Byer's little boy witnesses a murder in the parking lot of Callie Harper's quilt shop that sends this small town into shock. Material Witness has our quartet of leading ladies: Callie, Ester, Deborah and Melinda, who are once again involved in a murder investigation. Callie is beside herself and cannot believe this is happening. Little does she know that her world is about to be turned upside down and inside out. The killer wants something that Callie has and will not rest until they get it. Shane Black is back on the scene to investigate along with Andrew Gavin. Shane vows to protect Callie, who has taken up space in his heart and little Aaron who is the only one who can identify the mad man. Time is of the essence and they must all work together to figure out why Callie is involved before the killer strikes again. The ladies seem to think there are clues to this mystery hidden on a set of quilts that they were given. Shane thinks they may be off their rockers. A stack of quilts can't possibly hold the answers they are looking for right? Or can they.........

Material Witness grabs your attention right off the bat and doesn't let you go until your fingers have turned the last page. This book had my heart pounding one minute and the next minute I was smiling and giving a little fist pump! The love between family, friends, and how far one is willing go to protect them is captured beautifully in this book. The interaction between the children was an added surprise because I think they stole the show! Although I am sad that my adventures are over in Shipshewana, I am fully satisfied with how Vannetta has ended this amazing series of books. All three books are top notch and will always have a spot on my bookshelf. When I read a book that is as wonderful as Material Witness, I am always a little miffed why on earth people say they don't care to read Amish fiction. Vannetta Chapman has crafted a clever and witty tale that is full of suspense and engaging characters. Why would you not want to read something that will fill you to the brim with honest to goodness writing and beautiful story telling?

Puzzles 27 juin 2013

"Material Witness" is the third novel of the Shipshewana Amish Mystery series. It carries on with the characters we have all grown to love; Callie, Deborah, Esther, Melinda, Shane and Gavin, and continues to wind their lives together in a beautiful story of life and love.
For me, this novel is about puzzles. Big ones, like why do children fall ill with serious illnesses, why does evil exist in the world. Middle-sized puzzles, like how can Englischers and Plain people become real friends, the kind that are almost family....how does a new marriage become so quickly "normal" that it settles long-lived-with fears with just a glance or a touch at the right time. And the small puzzle in this book that's also the biggest puzzle of all begins with a last will and testament and a set of unusual quilts.
I will never hesitate to recomment a book by Vanetta Chapman, whether I have read it or not. I have found her stories to be compelling, riveting, and personal. These characters have been brought to life with her words, and I grow to care for each of them as if they have become a part of my family too. How does she do that? There we go again, another puzzle!

Circle of Friends 7 février 2013
Par Judy D. Corbin - Publié sur Amazon.com

Having never visited Shipshewana, IN, I have fallen in love with the wonderful group of people portrayed in Vannetta Chapmans, "Material Witness" book. When reading this book, one is taken to the place and really becomes one of the townspeople who could very well live there.
The circle of friends found, in Callie, Deborah, Esther, and their families along with Gavin, Shane Black, and the officials of the town, makes one realize the importance of friends, family, & a loving community. Add to this cirlce of ladies an heirloom quilt given to each that adds a bit of a puzzle to the mystery in town, makes one take to the action really quick. The faith and trust from the youngest (and a Swap) to the oldest is seen when reading this style of Amish Fiction Full of Grace writing by Vannetta.
The reader is drawn into all the action from the beginning to the end when the romance becomes fully known in this mystery story.
I have now read all of Vannetta Chapman's books with the exception of her newest, A Home for Lydia, which will be started as soon as this review is finished.
These books are well-written with all the inspiration of the Amish with a bit of the unknown mystery thrown in that makes it feel really true to life. After learning about the Amish, you do learn that they do have problems just as their Englisch friends do, but it is the forgiving nature and love of the Amish that inspires one to wish that all people could be as forgiving.
I loved this book, and can't wait to start the newest read! I loved reading the Amish Proverbs throughout the book. Love, love, loved it! And, all of this from a person who doesn't (used to never) read mysteries. These books I love!

Fantastic Fiction! 26 septembre 2012
Par Tammy's Book Parlor - Publié sur Amazon.com

Material Witness by Vannetta Chapman is the third book in the Shipshewana Amish Mystery Series. Having read the first two books A Perfect Square and Falling To Pieces, I was excited to read this third (and hopefully! not final) book in this series.
I was pleasantly surprised at how Vannetta Chapman's story telling had "increased." I loved the first two books but in this third book she has "come into her writing!" The characters, the sights & sounds and the development of the story are so GOOD!
Now, one doesn't have to read the first two books to understand the mystery of the third book but it would be best to read the books in order for more understanding of the characters.
A murder has been committed in the small community during the fall festival and one little crippled, wheelchair bound boy is the only witness.
Callie and her quilt shop are in the middle of the tragedy.
The robber somehow thinks that Callie knows where the treasure is hidden. Callie is clueless but with the help of her trusty Amish friends, Deborah and Esther, they piece the heirloom quilts together coming up with an interesting idea.
This mystery has a lot of action, hidden messages, friends that help and a dash of romance.
Here's hoping that there will be a fourth book. I love this series!
