Présentation de l'éditeur

A mysterious woven metal artifact is found at a paleontological dig in Africa. Mystified experts, confounded by the impossible timeline they receive from traditional dating methods, call upon a stubborn twenty-something with a unique talent. Matthew Turner's gift is also his curse: whenever he touches an object, his consciousness is flooded with the thoughts and feelings of those who touched it before him, be it last week or centuries ago. It's a talent that many covet, some fear, and almost no one understands.

Despite being exploited as a child and tormented by the unpleasant experiences imprinted on him from the various items he's "read," Matt agrees to travel from New York to the forests of Kenya. There, threatened by unknown enemies, and helped by a beautiful but prickly ally who begins to understand his strange ability, his mind journeys back in geological time to make a discovery so shocking that it forces us to rewrite all human history.

I don't know what to say except that this is a fantastic page-turning read. I am very skeptical when it comes to most fiction books. I'm constantly waiting to be disappointed by some obscure reference that shows the author didn't do his research or the story line becomes predictable. None of that applies to The Dig. Mr. Siemsen does a wonderful job of not only keeping your interest with the present day story, but leaves you wanting more with the historical story. It is thought provoking, with twists and turns, great subtle humor, and a style of writing that really sucks you into the characters. He has created a storyline and some winning characters that should make sequel books become addictive. Well done for this first time author. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A paleontology fiction with a brand new idea 21 août 2011

I never thought of this: Since complex life emerged on Earth, human life could have evolved ca. 30 times (from mouse to Homo Sapiens-in a string). This is pretty much the premise to the story: the discovery of remains of a civilisation from 150 million yrs ago. The novel is well written, especially the narrative. The ancient people dialog is excellent, the modern day dialog needs a tiny bit of work, but overall a great book and I'll be watching the author and buy the next one as soon as available. Can't wait for more...We need more paleo dig stories like this one.

I read books when I'm exercising on an elliptical machine and if it's really good after I'm done I'll keep reading. That didn't happen with this book although I did enjoy it, there was maybe only one "cliffhanger" moment for me. I liked the banter between Matt and Tuni. The sexual innuendos were funny and while not being quite "R" rated it gave the book a little bit more of an adult feel. The author did a good job developing Garrett Rheese as the villain he was. At times this villain was actually pretty funny as well. Also, the detective Chitundu was believable. He kind of had a little bit of a Columbo persona going for him, but he also had that classic suspicion of Westerners that made him annoying and correct in some of his assumptions. The "other world, other time" segments were well done. This book is actually about two stories with two sets of characters. However, you needed to suspend belief about several details here and there just to keep reading. The author also did a good job showing how Matthew's gift was actually a curse in many respects by pointing out things that I never would have thought of. I'd give this book good marks for the humor, characters, and Sci Fi but it wasn't a powerful story. However, I finished it and that's more than I can say for other Kindle books.

I doubt I would have picked up this book had it not been recommended by a friend. I am generally a fan of this type of novel, but this one had not caught my radar. I also prefer the established authors, having been disappointed by too many first-time authors. This one was different. Before I knew it, I was hooked. The characters came alive and I found myself caring more about them as I turned each page. The book has all of the key aspects of a classic, but I was most impressed with the depth of thought. Siemsen's attention to detail and motivation caught me off guard. This new author really shows huge potential to be one of the great fiction writers of our time.
I not only recommended this book to friends, I bought the book for several of them. Michael Siemsen, we want more!

UPDATE: I just finished retreading this book, and I found it almost as enjoyable the second time through. There were a lot of subtle detail that make the second journey even more full of life than the first.

I wasn't sure what to think of this book, but when I started it I couldn't put it down. Think Michael Crichton but with a little more thought. I was very impressed with the way the author incorporated multiple naratorial voices into one (or maybe several) characters throughout the novel. It is really an impressive display of the author's ability to separate several strands of thought and then amalgamate them into a very compelling story line. I like novels of this type in general, but I don't know that I've read one that kept me thinking about it even after I finished it like this one did. Can't wait for the sequel.
