While their Power Within album remains my 1st favorite, this album definitely lives up to its name. My favorite songs within are Three Hammers, Symphony of the Night (makes me want to play Castlevania), and Ring of Fire. They strove for a different sount and most certainly succeeded in shaking it up. Their passion is still as ever present in this work as with their past works! I hope others who buy this album enjoy it as much as I do!

Maximum Overload delivers. It's a big change as far as overall sound goes for Dragonforce, but as someone who's been a fan since Valley of the Damned, this is arguably the most intricate and notable release in the band's career. The Power Within wasn't bad, took me a wee bit of time to adjust to Marc Hudson's vocals. Thing is, it still felt like oldschool Dragonforce with a new singer. That's not the case here. This album is a lot better tailored to Hudson's vocal abilities, and it makes me really appreciate him that much more.

As I said previously, I'm a fan of the band, have been almost since the beginning. That said though, I'll be the first to admit that previous albums could get a bit "formulaic". I think that's what makes me appreciate this album so much, it breaks the mold. There is some REALLY well written stuff to be found here, like the standout track "The Sun Is Dead", my personal favorite track.

It's worth a listen to be sure, it delivers if you're willing to give it a shot.

UK power metal band (and Guitar Hero legends) Dragonforce returned this year with a new album, their sixth overall, titled Maximum Overload. It’s their second album with new vocalist Marc Hudson and first under the Metal Blade banner.

I confess I had stopped paying attention to Dragonforce in recent years. The last album I bought from them was 2006’s Inhuman Rampage, which I liked, but didn’t think was worthy of the hype it was getting. Maximum Overload was getting rave reviews from friends of mine though, so I took a chance on it. I’m glad I did. I don’t know if it’s just the new vocalist or a new dynamic in the band, but the songs on this album are much simpler and catchier than before. I mean, there’s still an insane amount of high speed guitar heroics, but it’s the simple melodies that really shine through and have you humming along. That has always been one of power metal’s biggest strengths, and Dragonforce really seems to get that here.

Maximum Overload is a very strong album overall, but it does have some standout tracks. The ultra-melodic anthem “Three Hammers” is my favorite song on the album, as it sounds like something Tyr or Gloryhammer might have come up with. “Defenders” and “Symphony of the Night” are also great. The closing cover of Johnny Cash’s trademark “Ring of Fire” is cheesy, but fun, and is a lighthearted way to end the proper album.

Speaking as a casual Dragonforce fan, I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I liked Maximum Overload. If you haven’t followed Dragonforce recently, this is the album that could very well make you a fan again. It’s up there with the latest Iron Savior and Primal Fear as one of the best power metal releases of 2014.

Edition Notes: The deluxe edition of Maximum Overload comes in a digipack and features a hefty five bonus tracks as well as a bonus DVD with a documentary and related footage. Even if you never watch the DVD, the bonus tracks make it worth the few extra bucks over the cost of the standard edition.

I am not going to do some huge detailed review here but if you are a fan of energetic, melodic metal then this album belongs in your collection. Haters of DragonForce are still going to hate this of course and some of their own fans may well hate it too because in recent years since adding Marc Hudson on vocals they have changed things up a bit with songwriting/song length and added more styles and tempos to their sound and ...(gasp!)...added some diversity to their music and to their lyrics. It's still DragonForce though! They still have all the speed, power and melody and epic feel to their music that made them well known to begin with. I think this album is great from start to finish. The finish being a hyper speed cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of fire" which I admit sounds like a weird idea but the song is actually awesome. Maximum Overload is Probably the best sounding DF album in terms of production as well. I have nothing bad to say about this album. I think DragonForce sounds better than ever since Marc joined the band and their last two albums with him singing are fantastic. BUY THIS ALBUM!
