Présentation de l'éditeur

This is the first book in the Measure of Devotion trilogy.

Jason Wadsworth is finally headed to university. Leaving behind his father's cattle ranch in favor of the posh, gaslit streets of Perdana, Jason is determined to climb the social ladder and forget his country roots. If only his father had gifted him with a more upscale slave.

Kale's been a country slave his whole life. All he wants is to keep his head down and live as comfortable an existence as possible. Unfortunately, his dramatic master despises him and makes life difficult at every turn.

Humbled by his first breakup, Jason grows to appreciate his ever-faithful slave and soon discovers that Kale is everything he's ever wanted. Now he needs to prove to Kale that his love is genuine.

Kale, meanwhile, tries to convince himself that he simply feels the devotion of a slave to his master, but his actions prove what his mind is unwilling to accept: he's falling in love. When Jason's future happiness is in jeopardy, Kale sets himself on a course to make Jason's dreams come true, even if it means facing up to the fact that, for the first time in his life, he loves someone else more than he loves himself.

Measure of Devotion is a bittersweet love story set in an alternate world and contains sexual content and adult language.

Other books in the Measure of Devotion trilogy:

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Thoroughly enjoyable read 27 mai 2012

It was a very sweet, bright, and enjoyable read, and it is well worth the price.

It has been a while since I managed to read a romance novel from cover to cover. I start reading for the premise, the initial awkwardness and relationship building, but as soon as the characters inevitably fall in hopeless love I lose interest and stop reading. We all know how that's going to end and rarely an e-book is written well enough to just enjoy the ride.

The first 13 chapters (a third of the book) are the best, and I enjoyed them immensely. Jason, the master, is a bastard and Kale is a smart slave secretly manipulating the master for his own benefit. This is a very interesting dynamics, very refreshing and different from most commonly abused cliches.

The next third (or so) of the book is the falling in love part. It was sweet, but it glossed over many issues. The actual "whoops, I am in love" moment was much to quick and abrupt, but the further relationship building was careful. I did not particularly like this part, yet I still stayed up until 5am to read it when I usually give up on a book altogether somewhere in this part. If you are looking for a cascade of never ending smoldering hot sex scenes, look somewhere else. There are a few sex scenes, but they are not terribly explicit, not the main focus by any means, and they blend into the story really well.

The last third of the book is the part where the two characters try to figure out the rest of their lives. Not to be too spoilery, let's just say it's not the "happily ever after" ending. But don't fret, there is a sequel in the works. Which left me a bit disappointed. The ending was overdone and too abrupt in preparation for the sequel. As it is the book does not really stand on its own. Oh well, where is that email alert on the sequel?

I have a few grumbles about the characters not being as deep and serious as they could/should be, but it just might be a good thing. In my mind one of the strong suits of "Measure of Devotion" is that the book is not taking itself terribly seriously. It has plenty of opportunities to go into dark(er) themes and stir up all kinds of negative emotions, but it does not and it keeps the tone light and sunny bringing almost fairy-tale quality to it. But even as it is they made me shed a tear.

This books purports to be historical, with carriages thrown in as one of the few historical icons to ground the reader. We have electrical lights, so we know it is likely late 19th century/early 20th. However, we aren't afforded a realistic setting, which renders the story tedious. I couldn't figure out if this was an alternate universe, alternate history, or what it was.

I won't rehash the story, that has been done quite well by others. As a lover of historical romance, this book simply doesn't fit the bill. The language is much too modern and the characters speak to each other in the same voice. There is rampant disrespect throughout. By 30% in, Kale (a name that in Hawaiian means free man and strong,) is speaking to Jason as though they are buddies. Jason is accepting of this and the story goes from there.

We never get a sense of an escalation of affection between Eric and Jason, but we are told that Jason loves Eric. (Much too much telling and not showing in this book.) Jason's broken heart rings false, because we never saw the relationship deepen.

A niggle that all authors should understand: Too many names that began with J - Jason, Joshua, and Jacob, all introduced in the beginning of the book. While I don't have trouble keeping characters straight in my mind, having so many "J" names so early kept me going back to see which one was which.

I never got a feel for either main character and didn't gain any affection for each. Spoiled characters are usually fun to read, because they are, at some point, redeemed. I didn't like Jason at all. He put me off in the beginning by tying Kale to the bedpost and then beating him for really no reason other than Jason's own petulance. The second beating seemed contrived. Kale didn't tell Jason he couldn't read. Jason DIDN'T ASK and supposedly, slaves aren't allowed to speak out of turn. Historical fact: If slaves could read and write, their masters considered them dangerous. If a slave was found to have received education, they faced whipping or worse.

The cliff-hanger ending didn't bother me, but I won't read the sequel. The lack of historical clarity, the modern language (no effort at all is made to anchor this piece in history,) the lackluster intimacy (doesn't have to be graphic, but it shouldn't be bland,) the lack of world building, the cliches, the obligatory bitchy woman (something I'd like to see eradicated from gay romance as that unto itself is a cliche,) and the lack of meat on the character's bones makes this a two-star read and an author I won't revisit.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A beautiful slave/master yaoi story 20 décembre 2012

I actually started out prepared to be very critical of this story. That lasted for a few chapters and then was gone!

Kale, the slave, has taught himself how to survive. He tries to be hard, to have no feelings. Yet his young master, Jason, in spite of being a bastard, manages to touch him from the beginning.

Kale certainly attempts (and mostly succeeds) in manipulating Jason. It's just that his manipulations are for Jason's good - and finally to his own detriment.

Few novels ever make me care enough for the characters to cry. This one did.

And I MUST buy the sequel!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting examination of m/m Submission & Dominance and Slavery in a love story setting 1 janvier 2013
Par Havan_IronOak - Publié sur Amazon.com

Measure of Devotion takes an unusual approach to the subject of slavery. Posit for a moment that the ancient slavery traditions of Rome had carried forward into the present day and that there was still a second lower class of human being that was destined to spend entire lifetimes as the property of someone else. This book makes that assumption and then examines the ramifications of that in a fictional story about one young man and the slave that he is given. Yes, this book has its elements of m/m sex but it's very much subdued by the meatier topics of romance and idealism amid a different social order than what we're used to.

The book is satisfying reading on the m/m romance level but it surpasses that by touching on and considering deeper issues involved in submission and slavery. It's clear that the author has spent a LOT of time considering these aspects of a dominance/submission relationship. Unlike many works of M/M erotica that touch on these themes, this book seems to have been less interested in the eroticism of the relationship than the feelings romantic and otherwise with the characters.

The book is well crafted and fast reading and has enough titillating action that it's never boring but it should also be read with the bigger issues in mind. Who knows? It might just expand the reader's outlook.

I'll definitely be checking out the second installment.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Unbelievable and not in a good way 12 avril 2014

I simply did not buy the romance between the two main characters for a minute. They had nothing in common and their relationship started out with the master being nothing more than a spoiled brat who beat the slave for no reason than to demonstrate that he could. While those facts were trotted out later on as a plot device, I simply could not get past the set up. Moreover, I find the master to be childish and unlikable. It's also clear that the trilogy is nothing more than one story cut up into thirds. I have zero interest in reading of the slave's further mistreatment before a HEA with a man I do not believe deserves him. Do not recommend.
