HASH(0x9f0855ac) étoiles sur 5 A superb work, superbly performed...with a bonus. 10 août 1999

While it lacks the weight of, say, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, this work is pure and purely Mozart. "Et incarnatus est" may be one of the most lovely soprano arias extant. I have always admired the clarity of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, and when you add Kiri Te Kanawa, Anne Sofie von Otter, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Robert Lloyd and a fine chorus you have an unbeatable combination. As a bonus (actually, to pad out the CD) Philips added Mozart's sublime "Ave Verum Corpus," worth the price of the CD in its own right.

You just can't go wrong with The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. I was already a fan of this wonderful chamber orchestra, and became even more fanatical after hearing them preform live, here at the University of Texas at Austin.
The only thing worse than a poor chorus and weak instruments is a hissy recording. This particular recording of Mozart's Great Mass in C minor features remarkable clarity, definitely the best of all my Mozart CDs. Aside from the wonderful sound quality, the Academy seems to so elegantly capture every subtle emotion of what is perhaps Mozart's grandest sacred work. The powerful instrumentation and vocals are balanced perfectly, neither one ever trumping the other. The Academy seems at all times precisely in sync with the notes; they really "know" Mozart extremely well, and it shows.
I recommend this CD to anyone looking for a crisp and powerful recording of the Great Mass. Even in its slightly incomplete state (Mozart never got around to writing some of the Credo and all of the Angus Dei), this piece speaks as if directly from Heaven.

A magnificent cd. For those who find Te Kanawa a bit lifeless, this will change your view. It is a gracious performance.

There is a small, but annoying technical flaw in the track of Sanctus - which ends as if it was clipped off prematurely to avoid a cough or someone dropping a music stand. First Philips Classical CD I have bought that has exhibited a technical flaw.

HASH(0x9f6dea74) étoiles sur 5 A wonderful CD 13 août 2001

Most of the mass, quite honestly, does not appeal to me and I much more prefer the Mass in B Minor by Bach. However, Mozart has some very nice pieces in the mass which include the Kyrie, Laudaumus Te, Gratias, and the Credo in Unum Deum. The soprano, Kiri Te Kanawa, is first rate and her crystal clear voice rings out with perfect clarity. Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is, quite honestly, one of the best orchestras in the world. Their devotion to presenting a well thought-out and performed work shows in this cd. The sound is perfectly clear, the soloist, chorus, and orchestra are excellent and one cannot help but get swept away in the power of the music--especially in the Kyrie. While the Baroque sound appeals to me more this CD is the premier cd out of all the copies of Mozart's Mass in C minor--A must for ANY musical fan

HASH(0x9f6de858) étoiles sur 5 Sacrality and the Muse 27 avril 2014
Par Bernard Michael O'Hanlon - Publié sur Amazon.com
As he descended from Mount Tabor, JC said to his disciples, "Verily, get your money on number four in the last race down at the dog-track!" Whoops - that's from the gnostic Gospel of St Sid of Ladbrokes! In actual fact, he said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."

The more I listen to K 427 and the Mass in B Minor, the more I view them in this light: it's the composer as evangelist. They're as canonical as the usual quadriga.

I'm as guilty as anyone of treating Sir Neville Marriner and the ASMF in the diminutive - nemesis is mine when I encounter a recording such as this; it pugnaciously sent me to the canvas. Recorded in 1994, this is a sensational performance of a masterpiece. It's gusty, passionate and reverential - just how I love my Mozart. Marriner and his cohorts generate stupendous amounts of torque. For once, the strings of the ASMF have a golden glow to their timbre. Indeed, in a blindfold test I would have been hard-pressed to identify them as such. Their colleagues in the ASMF Choir sound like a chorus of giants and giantesses. Collectively, they provide introit into the great mystery. The performance of the Qui Tollis is as harrowing as the flagellation scene in The Passion Of The Christ Definitive Edition [HD].

So why deduct a star? The singers are somewhat . . . . . matronly if not dowdy. Recorded some twenty three years after her famous outing with Sir Colin Davis, Te Kanawa is a master of her art even if her voice has less bloom than before. Her rival in this work, Ileana Cotrubas, is less a soprano and more of a hierophant in the Kyrie and Et Incarnatus est (Mozart: Mass in C Minor); try as she might, Kiri does not elicit the same magic. Anne-Sofie von Otter is as reliable as ever. The men have less to do in the Mass. I have never been impressed by Anthony Rolfe Johnson; would one walk over broken glass to hear this voice? I suggest not. Here, his contribution is satisfactory and nothing more. Robert Lloyd (born 1940) made some stellar recordings back in the Sixties and Seventies - two decades downstream, his voice wobbles intermittently.

Mention must be made of the recording of Ave Verum Corpus: it's a five-star triumph and numinously so. While I daresay it's deceptively easy to bash out K 618, performances of note are surprisingly rare. Herein, Sir Colin Davis (Universal) and Theo "Ursus" Guschlbauer (Erato) have a rival. One could purchase this disc for it alone.

The recording is stupendous. Hail Sir Neville!
