2013 Real Gone Music Reissue 23 novembre 2013
Par T.B. - Publié sur Amazon.com
This is a review of the most recent (2013) CD release from "Real Gone Music" of The Lords Of The New Church's 3nd (and final) studio album from 1984/1985, "The Method To Our Madness."

About the album itself - TMTOM found The Lords going for a more traditional (and commercial) straight ahead rock sound, most notably in how this album sounds as produced by late 70's/early 80s hard rock producer Chris Tsangarides. Stiv's lyrics take on a far more mocking, even humorous tone in many songs than ever before while mostly dropping the political overtones of their first album.

If the debut album feels like Stiv Bator's, the 2nd album a band effort, this one feels like it's dominated by Brian James - it's mostly snarling, upfront guitar through Marshall amp. This album predates and was very much an unspoken influence on late 80's LA area sleeze rock bands like Guns n' Roses who opened for The Lords in '86. The Lords toured extensively behind this album through 1985 but wound up losing their record contract with IRS Records and never recorded another full studio album (they did release a number of singles and EPs), spending the next 4 years in disarray and personnel changes.

This album also had the dubious distinction of having two very different mixes and track listings and running order when originally released on vinyl. The original UK/European mix released in late 1984 was more raw and in your face. The title track, "Method To My Madness" did not have the guitar doubled on the intro, there were no strings on "When Blood Runs Cold" and most of the other tracks had significantly different mixes. Also, the UK release didn't include "SF & T" (it was a B-Side) but did include "Fresh Flesh." When the album was released in the US in the Spring of '85, Fresh Flesh was in place of SF & T along with the different mix of the other songs. The 2003 Track Records remaster did not include SF&T. This 2013 reissue includes both SF&T and Fresh Flesh like the original late 80's CD release did.

All CD releases worldwide have unfortunately been the 1985 US (re)mix version - the original UK mix has never appeared on CD although the old Track Records and this Real Gone Music release thankfully include the original album non-strings version of "When Blood Runs Cold." Decades later, Brian James would be surprised to discover that the album had been remixed for the US release, he was never aware the album was remixed! He later somewhat rectified this by mixing several MTOM tracks closer to the original UK versions for the (highly recommended, btw) "Rockers" compilation.

Overall, this release is sonically on a par with the 2003 Track Records remaster. The original IRS cd released in the late 80's now sounds pretty weak compared to this release or the older Track Records issue. There are no bonus tracks from the various singles released around this album such as "Sorry For The Man," "Gun Called Justice" or their cover of The Who's "Substitute." A big plus though is the new liner notes and graphic layout of the booklet which includes a few nice photos of the band from the era the album was recorded as well as the original UK album cover in the CD tray insert.

If you are a first time buyer of this or the other 2 Lords albums newly released by Real Gone Music, I highly recommend all three albums. This one is their most directly accessible, hardest rocking album. This album will appeal most to those listeners interested in straight ahead sleeze garage rock including bands like Hanoi Rocks, Iggy and The Stooges, early 70's Rolling Stones, etc.

What's not to like? I love the music I listened to in my youth. I am glad it is still around and available.
