Fascinating material 2 mai 2013

I'm writing a review primarily to point out that the title of this book is not misleading as the reviewer "Brenda Tuttle" would have you believe. I hate to disappoint her by pointing this out, but the book's title is Middle-Earth Minstrel: Essays on music in Tolkien. It is not Music from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. And, incidentally, any book about Tolkien will have to touch on linguistics, since it is a major player in all of his works. Particularly descriptions of music in Tolkien works, which can, by its very nature, only come in word form... ... I'm very sorry for the previous reviewer who wanted to learn primarily from books that were turned into films.

For those interested, the chapters touch on some of the following topics: alliterative verse, phonaesthetics, "songs of exile", rhythm, "Lay of Lúthien", Middle English, the potential origins of Elvish song in Victorian Medievalism, the Silmarillion, and a few of Tolkien's musical influences. I highly recommend this book to Tolkien lovers, but especially interdisciplinarians. Be prepared for some serious, scholarly discussion. Well worth the whopping $38.

Misleading Title 17 septembre 2011

I have to say I was disappointed in this book; it was not what I expected. I assumed it would be about the music in the books, the songs sung by the characters, etc. It turned out to be mostly different people talking about linquistics and types of music, only occasionally touching on the music of Tolkien. There were a few articles near the end I liked and seemed to have something to do with Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Overall somewhat interesting, but not what I had expected nor wanted. If I had had a change to review before I purchased, I would not have bought it, especially since it was $38.
