4.0 étoiles sur 5 Action packed, suspense filled and sinfully sexy read... 1 avril 2014

Midnight Pursuits is an action packed, suspense filled and sinfully sexy read that will keep you captivated until the very last page!! The Killer Instincts series is absolutely fabulous, and with the addition of this installment, it just gets even better.

Sparks have flown between Juliet Mason and Ethan Hayes ever since their first meeting. Ethan was immediately drawn to Juliet’s intensity, strength, independence, courage and determination. Juliet is intrigued by the boy-next-door with the steel backbone that surprises her at every turn.

While trying to track down her brother’s murderer, Juliet is wounded and in need of help. She calls one her team members, but instead gets Ethan, who immediately comes to her aid. From there, Juliet’s assassination assignment turns into a rescue mission that is more than both of them bargained for. Juliet agrees, albeit reluctantly, to allow Ethan to help. Ethan seizes this opportunity to finally show Juliet that he is more than just a kid.

The characters in Midnight Pursuits were just phenomenal. The interactions between Juliet & Ethan were exceptional - full of wit, humor, intelligence and sarcasm. Juliet always on the defensive, never wanting to open herself up. Ethan always on the offensive, trying to coax and cajole his way underneath Juliet’s surface hoping to gain her trust. I loved every minute of their page time and the explosive chemistry between them. My only issue with this book is the quick profession of love between Ethan and Juliet. They go from friends/co-workers, to professing their love for one another, in a very short time period. I know that the situation they were in was very intense, but that quick progression just seemed unrealistic to me.

Midnight Pursuits is a thrilling read that can be read as a standalone. Although, in my opinion, you get a much richer reading experience reading this series in order. The character development, overall series arc and secondary characters are simply magnificent and I can’t wait to get more! Elle Kennedy lends a powerful voice to the romantic suspense genre and is definitely one that you don’t want to miss! On a side note - I am in serious need of Morgan and Noelle’s book - holy hotness, those two are spectacular!!

* I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ahhhh! I loved, loved, LOVED this book! I haven't read Elle Kennedy prior to this and now I just want to kick my own butt for taking so long! I have found a new romantic suspense author to love!

A romantic suspense should have an action move/thriller type feel, an air of unpredictability. This book had it in spades! Two separate groups of mercenaries/assassins being lead by former flames turned angry and bitter enemies (or not, I'm still not clear on that which fascinates me to know end)? Yes please!

Massive points to author Elle Kennedy for not making the women in her series sit on the sidelines waiting for the big 'ol strong man to come home from his missions! Thank you for creating a version of a kick ass female that I could not only love but relate to on some levels. The heroine, Juliet Mason is strong, intelligent and deadly but she's not invincible. To counterbalance her confidence in her skills as a master thief and contract killer, she's incredibly unsure about her emotions and personal life. I love a heroine who can and will use a weapon just as well as a man yet still have a woman's issues. She's also older than Ethan by a few years, a fact that seems to bother her more than it does him.

As for the story's hero, Ethan? Can I just take a moment to sigh over him one more time? He is definitely going on my Book Boyfriend list. This guy has what it takes to make my list: He's smart, tough, loyal, funny and yes, dangerous. Heck, all of the characters in Midnight Pursuits are dangerous, it's just that Ethan has that extra dose of charm and a deceptively calm exterior that can morph into a seriously deadly mercenary in less than three seconds.

Ethan and Juliet have such great chemistry throughout the book too. Starting as antagonistic with an underlying sexual tension, their relationship grows into wary admiration to a lust filled quasi-friendship that both are reluctant to admit has the beginnings of a real emotional connection.

Elle Kennedy has such a way with description that it was easy to picture the story being played out before my eyes. The attention to story details, characters and dialogue was evident in every page and made the story flow smoothly. I loved the additional characters as well, they made the world the author created more believable and gave me a better idea of how the inner relationships of each group worked and how close these people were to one another.

The only hiccup with Midnight Pursuits was purely mine. Since I came into this series right in the middle, I was lost for a few pages as to who was who, who was with who and who did what in the groups. A problem I wouldn't have had if I hadn't been such a dork and just bought the previous books in the series first (I will remedy this as soon as possible).

Final Verdict: Midnight Pursuits is dark, dangerous and downright sexy. If you're looking for a fast paced, action packed thrilL of a ride, then look no further!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Midnight Pursuits by Elle Kennedy 16 avril 2014

Elle Kennedy brings readers the fourth book in her Killer Instincts series, Midnight Pursuits. This is an action packed story with moments of levity and some serious romance. The intense chemistry between the hero and heroine is undeniable. Kennedy knows when to ramp up the romance and when to let action take the center stage. Readers who are fans of the series will love the lead in to the next book and new readers to the series will fall in love with the great secondary cast, as well as the main couple. A great addition to the series.

What I liked:

I haven't been reading romantic suspense for very long, but the more I read it, the more I like it. Elle Kennedy certainly knows her way around the genre and makes each scene in her books action packed and full of sizzle, not just in the bedroom. This is one of those books that makes your heart rate speed up, it's just that intense. From the situations their jobs create to the passionate response they have to each other, Ehtan and Juliet provide a great deal of emotion for the reader. Midnight Pursuits is a real nail biter in more ways than one and Kennedy does a wonderful job with it.

The main couple in this one provides a classic example of the law of opposites attracting, but they also have some things in common that the reader may not see at first glance. Ethan is the rookie on a team of mercenaries that can really kick some butt, but he isn't low man on the totem pole. He is a very capable and extreme. He is a former Marine and can hang with the best of them. His passion for the job is fierce and he loves the same way. Juliet could be characterized as the ice queen. She's an assassin and she loves her job. She doesn't let people get close and she isn't looking for romance. These two make quite a pair. The passion between them borders on a ferocity of sorts. It's almost animalistic. I think the thing that is so similar about them is that deep seeded need for adrenaline in every thing the do. I loved them sepately but together they were a force to be reckoned with.

I have not read the previous books in this series, but after reading this one, it's a given that I will go back and pick up the others. One of the things that made this book such an enjoyable read, were the great secondary characters, many of which have their own stories told in previous books and several with stories yet to tell. This book can easily be read as a stand alone, but I think reading them together probably provides the reader with a much more emotional connection to the group. I liked the underlying tension that existed between the leaders of both groups and it appears that their story is up next. I think each character had a place in this book and I definitely want to know more about each one and these amazing two groups with such strong men and women.

What I didn't like:

The main couple is drawn to each so strongly even from their first meeting that reader can easily see that they will end up together, there is no doubt of that, but things heated up a lot faster than I expected. I wanted a little more angst and build up to those all important three little words.

Bottom Line:

If you are looking for a read that will almost literally knock your socks off, this is it. Midnight Pursuits is that book that will keep you up at night and make you think about it when you are supposed to be working. It's that book that has just as intense love scenes as it does action scenes. What else can I say, you really gotta read this book.

Ultimately, I think that my expectations for this book were too high. I LOVED Midnight Games with Trevor and Isabel. LOVED it. I liked the progression of the characters, how they talked and related to each other, the perfect mix of outside characters, everything. I was very excited for this book because I thought the set up with Juliet and Ethan was good- her giving him a hard time about his age, etc. The beginning of the book was great. And then . . . something just didn't click. For one, Juliet was so vague about how she actually got shot and her torture of the wolf. That was a pretty important part of the book, and I'm not really sure why it was skipped. I feel that would have been good to see from the character standpoint. Ethan taking care of Juliet and her realizing what he did was also good. But then, the plot with the leader was too much. It didn't totally make sense and too much time with spent on his point of view. Ultimately, it was unnecessary. I also think that Juliet and Ethan went from bickering to in lust to in love too quickly. It was like whiplash. Either the book needed to be longer to allow for more character development there or Kennedy should have spent more time in one of those areas. I liked how they bickered and Ethan tried to bring Juliet out but she gave in very easily and really with no reason. She starts off by saying how she's this lone wolf who only wants guys for sex but immediately starts telling Ethan about her life, and seems to immediately fall in love after sleeping with him. It just didn't seem to add up. Also, after Ethan and Juliet are found, they spend a day in the hospital and are fine? The hospital just releases someone who has clearly been tortured? Maybe the hospital works differently there, I don't know. Also, they say they're getting the company to get an extraction. It makes it sound like the CIA. How are they handling this with the US? You have US citizens basically working in another country without permission but it's all just glossed over. They don't leave quietly without anyone knowing what they did -- it's all very public. Also, they make mention of the other characters we've come to love from the previous books but they're barely there. What's the point of getting the whole team together if no one talks or interacts? Abby and Kane have like one scene max and they're done and Isabel and Trevor are conveniently on their honeymoon this whole time. That was kind of frustrating.

And finally, I'm really not looking forward to Noelle and Jim's story. I actually like Noelle and D together, plus I always kind of thought that Jim was too old for there to be a romantic connection with Noelle. I also have a feeling that this hatred has been set up so much that whatever causes it is not going to seem like a big deal, ultimately. I'm curious and obviously I'll read it but I thought it would kind of be cool to have Noelle and D come together as these soulless assassins.

I have read all the other books in this series and was excited to read this book finally.. And when I started to read it I was let down from the beginning.... It was a slow read than the others.... It took me awhile to finish it and even then I skimmed it without reading the whole book.... The action and attraction was not there like the other books... I will read the next book about Noelle and James since they have a history and I am hoping its off the charts of how it all began with them....
