4.0 étoiles sur 5 Another page turner 20 février 2011

One thing about Michael Wallace's books - reviewing them without giving away too much of the story is almost impossible.

This is the second book about millennialist cults and the Mormon Church starring Jacob, son of a polygamist leader, a doctor, and a questioning soul. Bless his heart, he is just a great guy who wants to do the right thing, doesn't really want to practice polygamy, and is thrust into these situations requiring a more firm belief than he has. This time, the FBI has him going undercover to find another FBI agent who hasn't been in contact for quite awhile.

While not as good as the first in the series, The Righteous, it is still a great read with wonderfully developed characters. The political characters in this story are scary - you don't want to believe that this could actually happen but you know it probably does.

From one page to the next, the plot thickens and you never really know what is going to happen next. It is a book that is hard to put down - in fact, I didn't. This is a good and unique suspense thriller. I highly recommend you read The Righteous first to get the full story although this book can stand alone easily.

Michael Wallace is for real. I waited impatiently for this book and am really excited about reading the 3rd in the series. You won't go wrong with this book or any of his others.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Brilliant, but it sure needed an editor 29 mars 2011

I love this author's exploration of religious and cultural themes. He is a great story teller with wonderful insight into how culture shapes people, religion shapes culture and how thinking people can be both observers and participants in both.

However, both books in The Righteous series provide a lesson in the importance of editing. I don't know if there is a hardcopy version of either. I read both on Kindle. They were packed with both missing and extra words, sometimes entire phrases. These errors were not of the type to suggest a poor writer. In fact, I find his writing exceptionally subtle, engaging and informed. But, there were so many of these problems that they became a significant distraction.

To a lesser extent, the books would have benefited from a story editor as well. There were a few lapses in each story that I'm sure a good editor would have insisted be repaired. While most of the story lines were plausible and consistent, in a few places I was left wondering how an event could have happened based on what had been presented. I should emphasize that there were not many of these plausibility problems and for the most part the books rang true.

I hope a major publisher picks up on Mr. Wallace and hooks him up with a top-flight editor. He is definitely, in my opinion, a potentially great author, with much to teach and in a very entertaining way. But, polish would do wonders for him.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I'm losing sleep and it's Michael Wallace's fault! 20 février 2011

I read The Righteous, loved it and wanted more. I one clicked Mighty and Strong as soon as it became available for download. I started reading it last night about 6 pm and finally put my Kindle and myself to sleep around 2 am after finishing Mighty and Strong. Michael, I'm losing sleep and it's all your fault! You are going to have to quit writing such page turning thrillers!

I highly recommend both The Righteous and Mighty and Strong. I'm anxiously awaiting the 3rd book in this series. Write fast, Michael!

Hello,
I am an avid reader and do not write reviews often, but I must say that the main character who refuses to take another bride because they both are happy and content with one another. It should be their choice and the author did in no way condemn plural marriage, and seemed at times to lift up the new young Prophet. He gave him wonderful qualities and an open mind.In reading the three novels, I believe Michael has a special connection to the Mormon culture. Since I believe that everyone has the right to choose,I think the author gave a wonderful portrayel of the pros and cons to plural marriage.
I am not sure how God feels about this, as he allowed Soloman over 300 concubines, and that ended badly.
I think the author wanted more than anything for people to understand the culture.the bad and the good of it in a very fictional setting. I loved all three books and await the unrestrained writing of this author's fourth book on this subject. I have come to be a great fan
.Michael, keep being you. You cannot please all the people all the time, and I will be delighted to see you on the "New York Times Best seller's List".You are headed that way. Keep being true to yourself and dream big!!!!
As for the folks that did not like this novel, try to remember it is a book of fiction, and does not represent you or anyone else.
Please check out the newest novel on Kindle," The Red Rooster". I cannot put it down. Germans, do not be offended. Again, the author told the good and the bad in a fictional setting with fictional characters, even though i can almost hear Gabriel (Gaby) living and breathing......Hurrah!!!! Michael Wallace. You are fast becoming one of my favorite authors, and that is no small feat. Bambi Neal

4.0 étoiles sur 5 "A REMARKABLE STORY WITH UNFORGETTABLE CHARACTERS!" 18 mars 2012

Michael Wallace penned a compelling story on his research as he explores religious, and cultural themes. This interesting story contains incredible knowledge of the Utah culture, and the interpretation of cults. More important, this gripping story that's told through the eyes of Jacob, describes how culture can influence the life we choose to live. Michael Wallace has a voice of compassion, understanding and sympathy as he gently tells it like it is, but does not condemn, nor judge. Jacob is thrown into situations beyond his control, forcing him to define right-from-wrong, and good-verses-bad. His decisions will determine which road he must follow next. I highly recommend "MIGHTY AND STRONG" to all thriller lovers, who enjoy thought-provoking stories, combined with suspense. The author becomes a Master storyteller as he defines the true meaning of the word dominant, the impact of religious beliefs and culture, and the importance of spiritual existence in many lives. The author's writing is interesting, impressive, and unique.
